Uncertainty Management In Multiobjective Hydro-Thermal Self-Scheduling Under Emission Considerations, Jamshid Aghaei, Abdollah Ahmadi, Abdorreza Rabiee, Vassilios G. Agelidis, Kashem M. Muttaqi, H A. Shayanfar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, a stochastic multiobjective framework is proposed for a day-ahead short-term Hydro Thermal Self-Scheduling (HTSS) problem for joint energy and reserve markets. An efficient linear formulations are introduced in this paper to deal with the nonlinearity of original problem due to the dynamic ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones, operating services of thermal plants, multi-head power discharge characteristics of hydro generating units and spillage of reservoirs. Besides, system uncertainties including the generating units' contingencies and price uncertainty are explicitly considered in the stochastic market clearing scheme. For the stochastic modeling of probable multiobjective optimization scenarios, a lattice Monte …

Energy Spectra Considerations For Synchrotron Radiotherapy Trials On The Id17 Bio-Medical Beamline At The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Jeffrey C. Crosbie, Pauline Fournier, Stefan Bartzsch, Mattia Donzelli, Iwan Cornelius, Andrew W. Stevenson, Herwig Requardt, Elke Brauer-Krisch

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The aim of this study was to validate the kilovoltage X-ray energy spectrum on the ID17 beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). The purpose of such validation was to provide an accurate energy spectrum as the input to a computerized treatment planning system, which will be used in synchrotron microbeam radiotherapy trials at the ESRF. Calculated and measured energy spectra on ID17 have been reported previously but recent additions and safety modifications to the beamline for veterinary trials warranted a fresh investigation. The authors used an established methodology to compare X-ray attenuation measurements in copper sheets (referred to …

Thermodynamic Considerations Of The Corrosion Of Nickel Ferrite Refractory By Na3alf6-Alf3-Caf2-Al 2o3 Bath, Raymond Longbottom, Sharon Nightingale, Brian Monaghan Sep 2014

Thermodynamic Considerations Of The Corrosion Of Nickel Ferrite Refractory By Na3alf6-Alf3-Caf2-Al 2o3 Bath, Raymond Longbottom, Sharon Nightingale, Brian Monaghan

Brian Monaghan

Thermodynamic analysis was carried out to interpret the results of corrosion testing of nickel ferrite samples in cryolite-based baths. The equilibrium between cryolite-based baths and nickel ferrite was considered. Isopleths between cryolite-based baths and nickel ferrite confirmed that for the temperature range of interest (1223-1273 K) there was limited solubility of nickel ferrite in the bath. To better understand the formation of the metal from nickel ferrite, the effect of reducing potentials on nickel ferrite and nickel ferrite-cryolite-based bath systems were considered. The formation of a metal phase was predicted at relatively high pO2. The metal phase was nickel-rich at …

Designing Playful Games And Applications To Support Science Centers Learning Activities, Michail N. Giannakos, David Jones, Helen Crompton, Nikos Chrisochoides Jun 2014

Designing Playful Games And Applications To Support Science Centers Learning Activities, Michail N. Giannakos, David Jones, Helen Crompton, Nikos Chrisochoides

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

In recent years there has been a renewed interest on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Following this interest, science centers' staff started providing technology enhanced informal STEM education experiences. The use of well-designed mobile and ubiquitous forms of technology to enrich informal STEM education activities is an essential success factor. The goal of our research is to investigate how technology applications can be better used and developed for taking full advantage of the opportunities and challenges they provide for students learning about STEM concepts. In our approach, we have conducted a series of interviews with experts from science …

Mri Distortion: Considerations For Mri Based Radiotherapy Treatment Planning, Amy Walker, Gary P. Liney, Peter E. Metcalfe, Lois Holloway Jan 2014

Mri Distortion: Considerations For Mri Based Radiotherapy Treatment Planning, Amy Walker, Gary P. Liney, Peter E. Metcalfe, Lois Holloway

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Distortion in magnetic resonance images needs to be taken into account for the purposes of radiotherapy treatment planning (RTP). A commercial MRI grid phantom was scanned on 4 different MRI scanners with multiple sequences to assess variations in the geometric distortion. The distortions present across the field of view were then determined. The effect of varying bandwidth on image distortion and signal to noise was also investigated. Distortion maps were created and these were compared to the location of patient anatomy within the scanner bore to estimate the magnitude and distribution of distortions located within specific clinical regions. Distortion magnitude …

Determining The Geometry Of Mass-Flow Bins - Some Important Considerations, Peter Arnold Jan 2013

Determining The Geometry Of Mass-Flow Bins - Some Important Considerations, Peter Arnold

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It has taken some time to obtain general acceptance but in recent times, at least in Australia, competent designers of mass-flow bins use techniques based on the traditional concepts of Jenike to determine the appropriate geometry for mass-flow hoppers to handle bulk solids reliably. While the traditional Jenike design concepts may appear straightforward experience dictates that some important considerations need to be exercised during the design process, especially when handling the more difficult bulk solids, to ensure that the final bin construction performs to expectations. Some of the important considerations that this paper will highlight include: • Appropriate bulk solids …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

A presentation of ways to use social media platforms in libraries. The presentation first discusses blogs and wikis: an overview of what they are, examples, uses in libraries, considerations, and sources for more information. Next,, RSS is discussed: what it is, how it is used, tools required, and examples of RSS tools. Lastly, social tagging is discussed: what it is, why librarians/libraries/information professionals should care, sources for more information and examples.

Design-Side Considerations: A Reaction To Duem, Robert B. K. Brown Jan 2004

Design-Side Considerations: A Reaction To Duem, Robert B. K. Brown

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Evaluation of a system's usability is a difficult task, but a new method, DUEM, addresses several of the issues. Any evaluation conducted after the fact however has limited effect, so further work is required at the design end of the lifecycle. Early-Phase elicitation tools, such as i*, may form the basis for new design tools which simplify software development, improve usability and ensure greater system success. Informing such design tools with the principles of the latest Activity Theory-based usability evaluation methods, such as DUEM should facilitate easier testing. As an added benefit, such a design method can form the first …
