Synchronization is a crucial problem in the grid-connected inverter’s control and operation. A phase-locked loop (PLL) is a typical grid synchronization strategy, which ought to have a high resistance to power system uncertainties since its sensitivity influences the generated reference signal. The traditional PLL catches the phase and frequency of the input signal via the feedback loop filter (LF). In general, to enhance the steady-state capability during distorted grid conditions generally, a filter tuned for nominal frequency is used. While the rapid increase in the fraction of people aged over 65 is driving a substantial increase in the number of people living in nursing homes, there has been very limited previous research carried out on how residents of nursing homes perceive their thermal environment and there is a lack of thermal comfort guidelines for the aged care sector. Taking into account the real world applications, this paper considers a vehicle routing problem with stochastic demand (VRPSD) in which the customer demand has been modelled as a stochastic variable. Considering the computational complexity of the problem and to enhance the algorithm performance, a neighbourhood search embedded adaptive ant algorithm (ns-AAA) is proposed as an improvement to the existing ant colony optimisation. In this paper, self-sensing technology was introduced into an adaptive tuned vibration absorber, incorporating a laminated magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) structure, a hybrid magnetic system and a self-sensing component. The adoption of the laminated MRE structure and the hybrid magnetic system enables the absorber to have higher lateral flexibility and a wider effective frequency range. The integration of the self-sensing capability allows the absorber to operate without sensors and, at the same time, greatly reduces costs, required space and maintenance. Adaptive ultra-wideband wireless body area networks have been proposed as one of feasible mHealth platforms offering a high-speed, robust mobile health service. The error performance of such sytems outperforms non-adaptive systems by up to 4 dB. To further improve the error performance, the optimization of adaptive parameters is investigated in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed optimal adaptive systems achieves a 2 dB gain with respect to bit error rate (BER). This improvement is equivalent to extra reduction of the power consumption up to 37% in these networks, thus increasing the longevity and reliability of mHealth services.

In this paper, we investigate energy-efficiency in antenna selection OFDM-based systems. We show that an OFDM system with conventional antenna selection approaches, including per-subcarrier selection (i.e., selecting antennas independently for each subcarrier) and bulk-selection (i.e., choosing the same antennas for all subcarriers), suffers from a significant loss in energy-efficiency. To achieve a better energy-efficiency performance, we propose an adaptive antenna selection scheme where both the number of active RF (radio frequency) chains and the antenna indices are selected depending on the channel condition. This paper proposes an adaptive sliding mode control methodology to enhance the positioning ability of conducting polymer actuators typified by tri-layer conjugated polymer actuators. This is motivated by the search for an effective control strategy to command such actuators to a desired configuration in the presence of parametric uncertainties and unmodeled disturbances. After analyzing the stability of the adaptive sliding mode control system, experiments were conducted to demonstrate its satisfactory tracking ability, based on a series of experimental results. Opinions of individuals in real social networks are arguably strongly influenced by external determinants, such as the opinions of those perceived to have the highest levels of authority. In order to model this, we have extended an existing model of consensus formation in an adaptive network by the introduction of a parameter representing each agent's level of 'authority' based on their opinion relative to the overall opinion distribution. We found that introducing this model, along with a randomly varying opinion convergence factor, significantly impacts the final state of converged opinions and the number of interactions required to reach that state. …

This paper proposes a simple, but efficient, adaptive space-time-frequency coded (STFC) multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) system to improve the average BER performance for body-to-external link wireless body area network (WBAN) applications. The novelty of this paper is the proposed body direction based adaptive algorithm that controls the set of modulation scheme, space-time-frequency code (STFC) coding rate, and power of signal constellations implemented in STFC MB-OFDM UWB WBAN. In this paper, we consider lattice reduction (LR) aided linear detection in a DSTTD-OFDM (double space-time transmit diversity- orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) system with antenna shuffling. We first derive an antenna shuffling criterion for the LR-aided DSTTD-OFDM system. Next, we propose a combined reduced-feedback and adaptive LR algorithm by exploiting the correlation between OFDM subcarriers in the frequency domain. The LR-aided DSTTD OFDM system with this algorithm requires low computational effort for the LR operation and small feedback information. Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) is known for its field-sensitive shear modulus and damping property when it is exposed to a magnetic field. It has a great potential for the development of vibration reduction devices. This research considers information systems development (ISD) projects as complex adaptive systems. We investigate the question whether complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory is relevant as a theoretical foundation for understanding ISD, and if so, which kind of understanding can be achieved by utilizing the theory? We introduce key concepts of CAS theory such as interaction, emergence, interconnected autonomous agents, selforganization, co-evolution, poise at the edge of chaos, time pacing, and poise at the edge of time to analyse and understand ISD in practice. We demonstrate the strength of such a CAS approach through an empirical case study presentation and analysis. …
