Digital Privacy In The Home, Kelley Flannery Rowan
Digital Privacy In The Home, Kelley Flannery Rowan
Works of the FIU Libraries
This workshop covers how to stay safe in a digital environment while using the many conveniences a smart home offers. The first half focuses on understanding where the risks are in the digital environment and how to stay safe by creating secure networks and employing strong security tactics with biometrics, passwords, and other available features. The second half focuses on the Internet of Things, covering everything you are likely to find in a smart home. The presentation offers tips on how to reduce the risk of hackers invading your privacy through smart speakers and TVs, as well as addressing the …
Love From The Machine: Technosexualities And The Desire For Machinic Bodies, Ann-Renee Clark
Love From The Machine: Technosexualities And The Desire For Machinic Bodies, Ann-Renee Clark
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the dimensions and practices of "technosexualities" - human desires for machinic bodies. For the purposes of this project, technosexualities are defined as sexual and/or other intimate desires for technologically enhanced or constructed humanoid bodies ("machinic bodies") or the desire to be such a machinic body. A machinic body may be mechanical (robotic) and/or digital, techno-biological (as per biological computing and/or a laboratory-“grown” or built body), or “cyborg” (cybernetic organism, a partially technologically-modified, partially biological body.) Rather than interpreting technosexuals as troubled or disturbed “fetishists” who are attracted to the unnatural, or imposing suppositions of feelings of impotence …
A Mixed Method Study Of Prospective Teachers' Epistemic Beliefs And Web Evaluation Strategies Concerning Hoax Websites, Jennifer Coccaro-Pons
A Mixed Method Study Of Prospective Teachers' Epistemic Beliefs And Web Evaluation Strategies Concerning Hoax Websites, Jennifer Coccaro-Pons
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teachers need to be equipped with the tools necessary to evaluate content on the Internet and determine if it is a credible source, or a hoax website since they are expected to instruct and prepare students on how to evaluate the sites which is now a relevant phenomenon. The purpose of the mixed‑method study was to obtain an understanding of the web evaluation strategies of prospective teachers regarding the evaluation of hoax websites and how their epistemic beliefs may influence their evaluation. Another aspect of this study was to find out what outcomes resulted from providing guidance, or not to …
Examining The Relationships Between Gender Role Congruity, Identity, And The Choice To Persist For Women In Undergraduate Physics Majors, Bronwen Bares Pelaez
Examining The Relationships Between Gender Role Congruity, Identity, And The Choice To Persist For Women In Undergraduate Physics Majors, Bronwen Bares Pelaez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Persistent gender disparity limits the available contributors to advancing some science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. While higher education can be an influential time-point for ensuring adequate participation, many physics programs across the U.S. have few women in classroom or lab settings. Prior research indicates that these women face considerable barriers. For university students, faculty, and administration to appropriately address these issues, it is important to understand the experiences of women as they navigate male-dominated STEM fields.
This explanatory sequential mixed methods study explored undergraduate female physics majors’ experiences with their male-dominated academic and research spaces in the U.S. …
The Relationship Between Selected Standardized Test Scores And Performance In Advanced Placement Math And Science Exams: Analyzing The Differential Effectiveness Of Scores For Course Identification And Placement, Josue N. Urbina
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is a national need to increase the STEM-related workforce. Among factors leading towards STEM careers include the number of advanced high school mathematics and science courses students complete. Florida’s enrollment patterns in STEM-related Advanced Placement (AP) courses, however, reveal that only a small percentage of students enroll into these classes. Therefore, screening tools are needed to find more students for these courses, who are academically ready, yet have not been identified.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which scores from a national standardized test, Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/ National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), in …
Navigating Health Sources On The Internet: A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Online Consumer Reviews And Expert Text On Psychotropic Drugs, Shannon Hughes
Navigating Health Sources On The Internet: A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Online Consumer Reviews And Expert Text On Psychotropic Drugs, Shannon Hughes
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The Internet has provided an unprecedented opportunity for psychotropic medication consumers, a traditionally silenced group in clinical trial research, to have voice by contributing to the construction of drug knowledge in an immediate, direct manner. Currently, there are no systematic appraisals of the potential of online consumer drug reviews to contribute to drug knowledge. The purpose of this research was to explore the content of drug information on various websites representing themselves as consumer- and expert-constructed, and as a practical consideration, to examine how each source may help and hinder treatment decision-making. Methodology: A mixed-methods research strategy utilizing a …
The Effects Of The Use Of Technology In Mathematics Instruction On Student Achievement, Ron Y. Myers
The Effects Of The Use Of Technology In Mathematics Instruction On Student Achievement, Ron Y. Myers
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the use of technology on students’ mathematics achievement, particularly the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics results. Eleven schools within the Miami-Dade County Public School System participated in a pilot program on the use of Geometers Sketchpad (GSP). Three of these schools were randomly selected for this study. Each school sent a teacher to a summer in-service training program on how to use GSP to teach geometry. In each school, the GSP class and a traditional geometry class taught by the same teacher were the study participants. Students’ mathematics …
