Ontological Boundaries Between Humans And Computers And The Implications For Human-Machine Communication, Andrea L. Guzman

Human-Machine Communication

In human-machine communication, people interact with a communication partner that is of a different ontological nature from themselves. This study examines how people conceptualize ontological differences between humans and computers and the implications of these differences for human-machine communication. Findings based on data from qualitative interviews with 73 U.S. adults regarding disembodied artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (voice-based AI assistants, automated-writing software) show that people differentiate between humans and computers based on origin of being, degree of autonomy, status as tool/tool-user, level of intelligence, emotional capabilities, and inherent flaws. Toward An Agent-Agnostic Transmission Model: Synthesizing Anthropocentric And Technocentric Paradigms In Communication, Jaime Banks, Maartje M. A. De Graaf

Human-Machine Communication

Technological and social evolutions have prompted operational, phenomenological, and ontological shifts in communication processes. These shifts, we argue, trigger the need to regard human and machine roles in communication processes in a more egalitarian fashion. Integrating anthropocentric and technocentric perspectives on communication, we propose an agent-agnostic framework for human-machine communication. This framework rejects exclusive assignment of communicative roles (sender, message, channel, receiver) to traditionally held agents and instead focuses on evaluating agents according to their functions as a means for considering what roles are held in communication processes. Through social media platforms, massive amounts of data are being produced. Twitter, as one such platform, enables users to post “tweets” on an unprecedented scale. Once analyzed by machine learning (ML) techniques and in aggregate, Twitter data can be an invaluable resource for gaining insight. Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees, including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy which invite witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. High-resolution in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction was applied to study a cold-drawn and solution-treated 56Ni-44Tiwt% alloy subjected to uniaxial cyclic loading-unloading with incremental strains. The micro-mechanical behaviour associated with the partial and repeated B2↔B19' phase transformation at the centre of the sample gauge length was studied with respect to the macroscopic stress-strain response. © 2020 IEEE. In this work, a 3D printed modular soft gripper with highly conformal soft fingers was developed. A soft auxetic structure with compliant ribs is 3D printed simultaneously with each soft pneumatic finger for conformal grasping. The fingers of the soft gripper were printed monolithically, without requiring support material and postprocessing, using a low-cost and open-source fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer that employs a commercially available thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Objectives: Rigid image registration (RIR) and deformable image registration (DIR) are widely used in radiotherapy. This project aims to capture current international approaches to image registration. Methods: A survey was designed to identify variations in use, resources, implementation, and decision-making criteria for clinical image registration. This was distributed to radiotherapy centers internationally in 2018. Results: There were 57 responses internationally, from the Americas (46%), Australia/New Zealand (32%), Europe (12%), and Asia (10%). This paper is concerned with the equivalent static force method for the seismic design of selective storage racks with uplifting baseplates. It proposes a new procedure for determining the effective natural period of such racks in the cross-aisle direction for use in the NZS 1170.5 equivalent static method. The procedure is derived by comparing the base shear results of trialled Rayleigh methods against nonlinear time history analysis results involving 15 upright frame configurations, comprising 5 baseplate types for three, five and seven level racks.
