Lonoke County Park Suggestions, Rayna N. Van Keuren
Lonoke County Park Suggestions, Rayna N. Van Keuren
ATU Research Symposium
Research Question: Based on information obtained from examining Lonoke County Park user demographics, user preferences, and examining local parks in the area, what are some suggestions that can increase user satisfaction and increase the overall number of visitors?
Methods: I used online data sources as well as my own experience visiting local Lonoke County Parks to form my suggestions.
Analysis: After sorting through all my data, I settled with three different Lonoke County Parks that I provided suggestions for. The parks included Cabot Community Pond Development, Lonoke Ball Park, and Anthony Schmidt Memorial Park. Some common themes within the parks …
Residence Camps For Youth With Physical Disabilities, Amberlin Piles
Residence Camps For Youth With Physical Disabilities, Amberlin Piles
ATU Research Symposium
A residence camp consists of a facility or campsite that is utilized for the purpose of camping, requires an overnight stay, and is a popular summertime commodity. Youth with disabilities can benefit from residence camps because it allows them to have a sense of belonging while being surrounded by nature and varying aspects of inclusion. The programming at residence camps for youth with disabilities can consist of indoor or outdoor activities, designed and modified to accommodate the needs of individuals to enjoy and feel included.
The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of youth with disabilities at …
How Community Satisfaction Can Determine The Success Of Tourism Development In A Community, Carter Unrau
How Community Satisfaction Can Determine The Success Of Tourism Development In A Community, Carter Unrau
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Many counties in Eastern Kentucky and central Appalachia in general have suffered intense economic hardship in the past decades due to the decline in coal and other mining industries which once supplied many jobs to the people of the region. A common remedy to this is increasing tourism development in these communities. While this tactic has seen positive effects in the region, there's been communities that have given a negative review of the increase in tourism development. With such an economic gain to be had, its imperative that the source of this issue should be rooted out and resolved to …
Exploring Leisure, Social Participation In Older Adults, Zahra Fatina
Exploring Leisure, Social Participation In Older Adults, Zahra Fatina
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Older adults often face challenges in meaningful occupations in their neighbourhoods, often tied to place-based barriers and changes including neighbourhood decline or gentrification. The objectives of this study are to draw on findings from an ethnographic study exploring older adults’ lives in their neighbourhoods, in order to contextually situate the diverse experiences of older adults as they engage in community occupations, focusing on social participation and leisure. We employed an ethnographic methodology with 38 older adults living in two neighbourhoods in a mid-sized Canadian city. Participants engaged in narrative interviews, photo elicitation interviews, go-along interviews, and activity-space mapping with follow-up …
Using Immersive Data Visualization To Highlight Changing Travel Patterns In Maine Due To Covid 19, Colleen Metcalf, Charlotte Aucoin
Using Immersive Data Visualization To Highlight Changing Travel Patterns In Maine Due To Covid 19, Colleen Metcalf, Charlotte Aucoin
Thinking Matters Symposium
The impacts of COVID 19 are of top concern to tourism policy makers and stakeholders across Maine, as tourism plays a vital role in the state’s economy. This project shows the value of the Storymap to present, in an accessible and visually appealing way, the continuing research on how volunteered geographic information from social media can track changes in tourist’s movement and spending in Maine. The metadata from Flickr photos was used to examine where visitors spent time in the summer of 2020, revealing new patterns of tourism activity due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. In addition, we incorporate the results …

Manager And Visitor Perceptions Of Public Recreation Land Management, Rick Gage
Manager And Visitor Perceptions Of Public Recreation Land Management, Rick Gage
National Environment and Recreation Research Symposium
This paper presents the results of semi-structured interviews with key informants representing both users and managers of a public recreation area in West Virginia investigating perceptions of visitor and manager goals and objectives, and their relationship to user-manager recreation conflict. Preliminary analysis indicates that management goals are not as diverse as expected and there seems to be a much stronger emphasis on development and visitor satisfaction than protection of natural resources. Further, it appears to be the case that both visitors and managers experience and can identify user-manager conflict at this recreation area. Results of these interviews will be used …

Abstract
Many festivals originated with community celebrations. Through festivals, their ethnic, historical, religious piety, community pride, culture preservation, social cohesiveness and reconciliation are embodied. The significance of the economic contribution from festivals or special events has been well documented in the past two decades; thus, festival/special event creation is now treated as a strategy for tangible economic development. In addition, research focused exclusively on the relationship between patrons’ perceptions of festivals/special events and economic benefits overwhelmingly dominates this field. Indeed, it is essential to understand the meanings of festivals from the patron’s standpoints since their perceptions are associated with the …
Exurban Residents’ Perceptions Of Naturally Returning Predators: Connecticut Case Study, Margaret E. Sackrider, Susan G. Clark, Isaac M. Ortega
Exurban Residents’ Perceptions Of Naturally Returning Predators: Connecticut Case Study, Margaret E. Sackrider, Susan G. Clark, Isaac M. Ortega
Yale Day of Data
As a result of reforestation, growth of exurban areas and wildlife adaptation, it is believed that the public is currently encountering more human-wildlife conflicts than ever before. The key to balancing wildlife conservation and human development is understanding the dynamic relationship between humans and carnivores. Specifically, gaining insight into the complexity of this relationship will aide in the creation of more effective conservation policy and outreach.
Reforestation throughout Connecticut has supported a tremendous population growth of pray species and subsequently the growth of predator populations including coyotes, Canis latrans, and black bears, Ursus americanus. According to some biologists, …

Caver Quest 3d Virtual Cave Simulation Of Snowy River In Fort Stanton Cave, Ronald J. Lipinski, Pete Lindsley
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
Virtual worlds, or 3D simulations through which an avatar can travel, is becoming a common means to display products or provide training in new environments. This paper describes the steps in producing the 3D virtual simulation of Snowy River in Fort Stanton Cave, New Mexico. A traditional cave survey and map with cross sections was used to produce a 3D meshed surface of the cave walls using the Blender software package. Photographs were taken of the walls, ceiling, and floor and merged together. The merged montage was applied to the 3D mesh walls as a “texture”. Unity3D was used to …
Evaluating The Status Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia Seiser
Evaluating The Status Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia Seiser
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
In 1964 the United States government passed landmark legislation creating a National Wilderness Preservation System to preserve and protect natural landscapes for primitive use. Despite four attempts to create a Cave Wilderness designation, two by the Cave Research Foundation, one by the National Speleological Society and one by a unit within the National Park Service system, no Wilderness designation has been made to protect and preserve a specific cave, region within a cave or a karst region. The question remains: if and when will the US declare a cave or portion of a cave/cave system as Wilderness? Two federal acts …
