Presentation looking at pregnancy and mental health care in the VA system. Documents a study examining the prevalence of pregnancy care and comparing the mental health diagnoses among pregnant and non-pregnant women in VA care. Then examining the degree to which pregnant veterans receive VA mental health care during their pregnancy. Concludes that pregnant women veterans using VA care have a substantial mental health burden.

Your Friends And Neighbors: Localized Economic Development And Criminal Activity, Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens

We exploit a sudden shock to demand for a subset of low-wage workers generated by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program in San Antonio, Texas to identify the effects of localized economic development on crime. We use a difference-in-difference methodology that takes advantage of variation in BRAC’s impact over time and across neighborhoods. We find that appropriative criminal behavior increases in neighborhoods where a fraction of residents experienced increases in earnings. This effect is driven by residents who were unlikely to be BRAC beneficiaries, implying that criminal opportunities are important in explaining patterns of crime.

The Fabian strategy, also known as strategic defense, is a military strategy in which a weaker force avoids decisive battles with the enemy and creates delay in a war of attrition until the right moment arrives to deliver a decisive blow. General George Washington and his Continental Army, supplemented by the militia, employed this strategy successfully against the British Army during the War for American Independence. The Russian generals did not, however, employ a successful strategic defense against Japanese expeditionary forces in the Russo-Japanese War.
