International Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Military memoirs are written in many western countries, but who writes them, who publishes them, what is written in them and why they are written can differ from country to country. Some aspects, such as the low number of female writers, are universal, other aspects are warrior nation related, such as the kind of soldiers that get published by traditional publishers, and some aspects are completely country dependent, such as whether reservists publish books, or not. This presentation, given to the PSP (Power, Space and Politics) research group at Newcastle University, gives a quick overview of some of the results …

Chapter 13: Operation Neptune Spear: Was Killing Bin Laden A Legitimate Military Objective?, Kevin H. Govern

Kevin H. Govern

In this chapter I take the killing of Osama bin Laden as a test case for considering the moral and legal status of intentionally killing individuals deemed a threat to national security, under conditions in which the object of the targeted attack is offered little or no opportunity to surrender to attacking forces. The target in such operations, in short, is treated as though he were a belligerent: a person placed on a kill list may be targeted in a way that would be legitimate if he were an enemy combatant. In such cases, we think of him as having …

For soldier-authors in any western country, it is very important to explicitly assure their audiences that what they write is the truth (either subjective (35%) or objective (22%). They provide truth guarantees to substantiate this claim, the most important one being their own or someone else's memory (41%). This is despite the fact that they also explicitly perform self-censorship, for example by anonymising names (84% of the disclaimers) or black barring photos (34%). In every one of the countries researched (Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, United States and Canada) at least one author mentions having been censored by their own ministry …

Disillusionment In Afghanistan. A Five Country Study Into Plots By Soldier-Authors, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Jun 2012

Disillusionment In Afghanistan. A Five Country Study Into Plots By Soldier-Authors, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

It is often said that the majority of stories written by war veterans in the 20th century are disillusionment plots. But is that still the case in the 21st century? Are young men and women still going into, for example, Afghanistan with high ideals that are shattered during their deployment, and write books about their disillusionment? In this paper, the preliminary results are presented from a study into military books. Based on Friedman’s plot theory, this study compares all 54 autobiographical books published between 2001 and 2010 by Afghanistan veterans in three different languages from five different countries (the Netherlands, …

Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser

pablo rosser

Yolanda Carrion & Pablo Rosser Six wells at Tossal de les Basses in Spain captured a large assemblage of Iberian woodworking debris. The authors’ analysis distinguishes a wide variety of boxes, handles, staves, pegs and joinery made in different and appropriate types of wood, some – like cypress – imported from some distance away. We have here a glimpse of a sophisticated and little known industry of the fourth century BC.
