Pdd In Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Oct 2014

Pdd In Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Using a mixed-method approach, this study examined the prevalence of post-deployment disorientation (PDD) in military memoirs. Post-deployment disorientation (Weibull 2012) is operationalized in this study as the writer describing either a feeling of prolonged alienation or one or more of the three post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (re-experiencing, avoidance and numbing and/or increased arousal) after returning from his or her deployment. Content analysis to detect the occurrence of PDD was performed on all 54 military Afghanistan memoirs that were published between 2001 and 2010 in English, German or Dutch in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands, …

Schrijvende Militairen, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Waarover schrijven …

The Expansion Of Executive Powers In Response To The Threat Of Bioterrorism Against Individuals And Agribusiness, Samuel W. Bettwy Aug 2014

The Expansion Of Executive Powers In Response To The Threat Of Bioterrorism Against Individuals And Agribusiness, Samuel W. Bettwy

Samuel W Bettwy

This paper examines and compares, in historical context, the expansion of governmental authority in response to threats of bioterrorism, one of which is aimed directly at people, the other of which is aimed directly at agribusiness. The examination reveals that there is a historical, natural tendency of the executive branch to expand its powers and that the legislative and judicial branches tend to defer to the executive branch during emergencies. The comparison reveals that, although there is such a natural attempt by the executive branch to expand its powers, such expansion has yielded more to concerns over individual rights and …

Truth And (Self) Censorship In Military Memoirs. A Five Country Study Into Military Afghanistan Autobiographies, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Jun 2014

Truth And (Self) Censorship In Military Memoirs. A Five Country Study Into Military Afghanistan Autobiographies, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Sometimes it can be fairly difficult for outsiders to gain access to the military field. However, there is a rich source on the military that is readily available for every researcher: military memoirs. This source does provide some methodological challenges, nevertheless. One might wonder about the reliability (‘truth’) of these autobiographies and whether their content is affected by the fact that these books are prone to official censorship by the military in order to preserve operational security. This study shows that truth and (self) censorship are not only a concern for researchers, but also for military writers themselves and it …

The Lebanon-Israel War Of 2006: Global Effects And Its Aftermath, Emmanuel Kotia, Fiifi Edu-Afful Jun 2014

The Lebanon-Israel War Of 2006: Global Effects And Its Aftermath, Emmanuel Kotia, Fiifi Edu-Afful

Emmanuel Wekem Kotia

This article examines the demands for global liability for the killings and extensive destruction committed by Israel and Hezbollah in the 2006 war. It explains why, despite strong condemnation globally for the disproportionate force used in that unconventional war, the concrete steps specified by the United Nations Resolution 1701 have failed to address the primary challenges that necessitated the war. Based on the authors experience on the field as peacekeepers, this article adds another dimension to the already exiting narratives on the second Lebanese war by emphasizing the perverse consequence of an irregular warfare between a legitimate state and an …

International Drug Trafficking And National Security Of Turkey, Doç.Dr. Behsat Ekici Jun 2014

International Drug Trafficking And National Security Of Turkey, Doç.Dr. Behsat Ekici

Ekici Behsat

Drug trafficking is an ever growing international security conundrum. Transnational crime syndicates have proved to be extremely resilient to counter-narcotics initiatives. Despite the efforts of national and international institutions, enormous amounts of drugs are produced, trafficked and consumed throughout the world. Transnational crime syndicates manufacture new psychoactive substances when the governments increase controls over existing drugs. Annual number of drug-related deaths has increased to 250,000 globally. Illicit drug trade proved to be an insidious threat that finances terrorism, instigates corruption, undermines economic development and erodes state authority. Turkey is exposed to massive flows of narcotics as it lies at a …

Partners Or Competitors? The Evolution Of The Department Of Defense/Central Intelligence Agency Relationship Since Desert Storm And Its Prospects For The Future, David Oakley Apr 2014

Partners Or Competitors? The Evolution Of The Department Of Defense/Central Intelligence Agency Relationship Since Desert Storm And Its Prospects For The Future, David Oakley

David P Oakley

Over the last decade, wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and global counterterrorism operations have led to a significant increase in the partnership between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Department of Defense (DoD). While recent conflicts helped develop the CIA/DoD relationship, legislative action and organizational changes that began in the 1990s in response to Desert Storm and the changing post-Cold War landscape set the foundation for partnership development. Although the CIA/DoD partnership appears to be closer than ever before, there are certain issues and conditions that could, for better or worse, affect how the partnership evolves in the future. Understanding …

Cold War Ii: Those Evil Russkie He-Men Are Making Us Frack Ourselves,, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.

Michael I Niman Ph.D.

You have to admit, the timing is convenient, both for us handsome free Americans and for the cursed Russians. If you’re Russian, forget about the regular jailing of protesters and musicians, your he-man government and its bizarre hatred of gay folks, the degradation of your environment and rape of your natural resources, and the rise of a billionaire mafioso class. You now have rude hubristic Americans to monopolize your hate and fear. Ditto for Americans. Forget every issue we were fretting about the day before masked, Russian-speaking troops swarmed over the border and “did not invade” Crimea, annexing it and …

The Security Culture Of A Global And Multileveled Cyber Security, Zenonas Tziarras Jan 2014

The Security Culture Of A Global And Multileveled Cyber Security, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

This paper seeks to argue for the development of a global and multileveled management of cybersecurity. To do so we first define cybersecurity by situating it within the broader framework of the changing concept of security. To this end we look at the evolution of the security concept, mainly since the end of the Cold War, and its relationship to cybersecurity in today’s global affairs. Then we identify the referent object of security, the importance of cyberthreats, and the need for a multileveled management of cybersecurity and cyberthreats. For such a management to be possible and effective, this paper argues …

The paper will analyze these responses from a cultural, political, legal, and policy standpoint

The Fox And The Hedgehog: Contrasting Approaches To Anticipating The Environment, Randy Borum Jan 2014

The Fox And The Hedgehog: Contrasting Approaches To Anticipating The Environment, Randy Borum

Randy Borum

This article uses the ancient metaphor of the fox and the hedgehog to discuss different ways of thinking about the global security environment. He suggests that that in a complex, interconnected and rapidly changing world, more agile, adaptive, intellectually diverse fox-like approaches will be needed to anticipate and adapt to what lies ahead.

The Impressions Of Emergency Services Students In A Homeland Security Course: The Benefits Of Reflective Thinking And Journaling, Eric Russell, John Fisher Dec 2013

The Impressions Of Emergency Services Students In A Homeland Security Course: The Benefits Of Reflective Thinking And Journaling, Eric Russell, John Fisher

Dr. John R. Fisher

This case study explored the impressions a homeland security course had on the emergency service student. The setting for the study was a state-sponsored university in the western United States. The 17 participants were declared, undergraduate emergency services majors that underwent a 7.5-week distance learning homeland security course. Grounded theory was used to analyze and develop themes from student reflections from the class. The findings of the study suggested that the most important impressions students took from the class were about global awareness, an understanding of the vulnerabilities of terrorism to the nation and the importance of a homeland security …

Comparing Uses Of The Strategic Defense (Fabian Strategy) By General Washington (1776-78) And Russian Generals (1904-05), Samuel W. Bettwy Dec 2013

Comparing Uses Of The Strategic Defense (Fabian Strategy) By General Washington (1776-78) And Russian Generals (1904-05), Samuel W. Bettwy

Samuel W Bettwy

The Fabian strategy, also known as strategic defense, is a military strategy in which a weaker force avoids decisive battles with the enemy and creates delay in a war of attrition until the right moment arrives to deliver a decisive blow. General George Washington and his Continental Army, supplemented by the militia, employed this strategy successfully against the British Army during the War for American Independence. The Russian generals did not, however, employ a successful strategic defense against Japanese expeditionary forces in the Russo-Japanese War. To understand why, this paper considers the elements of the Fabian strategy and compares how …

Researching ‘The Most Dangerous Of All Sources’: Egodocuments, L.H.E. (Esmeralda) Kleinreesink Dec 2013

Researching ‘The Most Dangerous Of All Sources’: Egodocuments, L.H.E. (Esmeralda) Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Egodocuments are texts in which an author writes about his or her own acts, thoughts and feelings, such as diaries, blogs, and memoirs. This chapter looks at how egodocuments can be (and are) used by military researchers. It concludes that it offers great research opportunities for any researcher despite scientific discipline or methodological background. All sorts of elements can be researched from paratext, theme and plot, to the psychology behind word usage, and both qualitative and quantitative methods can be used. Careful scoping and time and patience to collect the documents involved are essential ingredients for the successful military egodocument …
