Musculoskeletal Injury Concealment In The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Joshua D. Wooldridge
Musculoskeletal Injury Concealment In The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Joshua D. Wooldridge
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
INTRODUCTION: Among service members, musculoskeletal injuries threaten military readiness and place a substantial burden on medical and financial resources. While musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are a leading threat to military readiness, service members’ unwillingness to seek care constrains current prevention and surveillance efforts. A growing body of evidence shows US service members conceal a large proportion of injuries, especially in training environments. The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is a critical training environment for future US military commissioned officers. Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) is the largest commissioning source of new officers for the US military. ROTC cadets are college students concurrently …

Dietary Intake And Energy Expenditure Of Pararescuemen During Routine Training, Andrea Woita
Dietary Intake And Energy Expenditure Of Pararescuemen During Routine Training, Andrea Woita
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Pararescuemen are one group of Air Force Special Operations Forces (SOF) who engage in vigorous physical training to achieve mission readiness. This type of training requires high energy expenditures and matching dietary intake to support basic physiological needs and to meet performance demands. However, few studies have investigated the energy expenditure and dietary intake of SOF and none have specifically examined these behaviors in Pararescuemen. The goal of this investigation was to determine the energy expenditure and dietary intake of Pararescuemen during routine training - a period when these operators receive supervision and guidance for performance improvements, recovery, and career …
Life After Service For Post-9/11 Veterans: Data, Methods, And Policy Impacts, Justin Stockton Gardner
Life After Service For Post-9/11 Veterans: Data, Methods, And Policy Impacts, Justin Stockton Gardner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Designed as a three-article style dissertation, this study was developed to first assess literature and data related to veteran outcomes following active duty service. Secondly, this dissertation sought to determine the best approach for measuring changes in veteran outcomes as a function of the policy process, which resulted in the development of a new methodological approach, Event Outcome Analysis based on Event History Analysis. Finally, veteran outcomes in employment and educational degree attainment were measured using Event Outcome Analysis to determine the relative impact of the 2008 GI Bill on Post-9/11 veterans. Study findings included statistically significant 2008 GI Bill …
Listening To The Ranks: Perceptions Of The U.S. Air Force Occupational Health And Safety Training, Melissa Jo Breunig
Listening To The Ranks: Perceptions Of The U.S. Air Force Occupational Health And Safety Training, Melissa Jo Breunig
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Occupational health and safety hazards are abundant in military environments. Due to the hazardous occupational settings, injuries remain a public health concern in the United States military. Public health plays a critical role in injury reduction by addressing the need for comprehensive safety education training, and more specifically, exposure related injuries. A secondary data analysis was completed using Communication Theory as the overarching framework to analyze 13 qualitative interviews conducted with Airmen to gain their perceptions of the occupational health and safety training at Nellis and Creech Air Force Base (AFB). Pedagogy and training content were the two main themes …
Nuclear Arms Control: Challenges And Opportunities In 2013, Steven Pifer
Nuclear Arms Control: Challenges And Opportunities In 2013, Steven Pifer
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
U.S. nuclear arms control policy must address numerous factors, including our strategic relationships with Russia and China, the potential for future nuclear weapons reductions--including non-strategic nuclear weapons, and the offense-defense relationship, given concerns that missile defense developments could in the future affect the nuclear balance. Washington DC must also consider its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, how to dissuade new countries from joining the nuclear weapons ranks, and what to do about the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which the United States has signed but not ratified. This presentation will explore challenges and opportunities facing Washington DC in the aftermath of …

Redefining Security In Sub-Saharan Africa, Winta Sintayehu Gebremariam
Redefining Security In Sub-Saharan Africa, Winta Sintayehu Gebremariam
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
New and challenging threats to humans are currently on the rise. These threats to human well being have been neglected and ignored within the traditional conception of security. Security studies have mainly focused on traditional threats, mostly military and political. Although still important, this perspective lacks the ability to address nontraditional threats that are killing and injuring millions each year. Each year, millions die of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, hunger, and water related diseases among others. Although these threats are widespread throughout the world, Sub-Saharan Africa bears the brunt of these threats. This thesis proposes an ecological approach …

The primary purpose of the project, as originally conceived, was to design and implement a series of applied research studies to validate the effectiveness of a blended learning ecology in the teaching of life saving medical skills to US Army combat military personnel. The project has since undergone several changes to include changing the focus to the development of a Program of Instruction (POI) for Combat Lifesaver Skills (CLS). Additionally, the CLS course content was integrated with Personal Response Systems (PRS) to promote the learning outcomes outlined in the POI, and 2 eLearning Modules were created to further reinforce content. …

Improving disaster response capabilities within this country requires better coordination not only within the Department of Homeland Security, but also across the federal government as well as with state and local governments, private and non-profit sectors. To do so, according to more than 150 state and local stakeholders that I surveyed in April, 2009 and again in April, 2010, requires that FEMA improve its capacity to fully support state, local and tribal stakeholders … that it improve its internal business practices so as to better implement federal policies and guidance…that it find a way to use thematic goals and transition …

A Question Of Investment: Is Prevention Worth The Price?, Scott B. Smith, Christine G. Springer
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
In today’s calculus of public and private budgeting, an ounce of prevention may no longer be worth a pound of “cure.”
“Prevention” takes many forms: Preparing one’s family for an emergency. Buying life and property insurance. Buying corporate insurance. Having a sufficiently-sized and well-trained security workforce at your workplace. Supporting law enforcement efforts to get one step ahead of the bad guy (whether a criminal or a terrorist). Supporting entities like UNLV’s Institute for Security Studies whose sole raison d’etre is to make Las Vegas and Nevada a safe and secure place to live, work and visit.

City Of Las Vegas Detention And Enforcement Accreditation Evaluation Program, Daniel Bennett
City Of Las Vegas Detention And Enforcement Accreditation Evaluation Program, Daniel Bennett
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The City of Las Vegas, Detention and Enforcement is a law enforcement organization that is significantly unique in its mission and organization. On March 15, 1982, the City of Las Vegas determined that, due to extreme overcrowding at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Departments holding facility, it was time to create the Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services. As the population of Las Vegas continued to grow, the Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services also increased in both size and degree of responsibilities. In 1986, the Las Vegas Park Rangers were absorbed and became the law …
Emergency Managers As Change Agents, Christine G. Springer
Emergency Managers As Change Agents, Christine G. Springer
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
Since 2001, FEMA and others have been defining and refining competencies for emergency management professionals. In so doing, they have addressed directly and indirectly the qualities of leaders. We know that leadership is not a person or a position. It is a complex relationship between people, based on trust, obligation, commitment, emotion, and a shared vision of the good. We also know that transformational or change-based leadership has become an organizational necessity given the fact that emergency management as a profession is just now coming into its own and emergency management jobs are not traditional in terms of the how, …

Session 11 - Radioactive Dispersion Devices (Rdd): What Are The Odds?, Dennis Bechtel
Session 11 - Radioactive Dispersion Devices (Rdd): What Are The Odds?, Dennis Bechtel
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Since the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 there has been apprehension that the United States may be ill-prepared to prevent future terrorist events. One source of concern is that a Radioactive Dispersion Device (RDD) could be detonated at a vulnerable target anywhere in the nation. A RDD, also known as a “dirty bomb, is a conventional explosive packed with radioactive material. The explosion could disperse radioactive material over a wide area. The target could be an icon associated with American democracy and government, critical systems and infrastructure, a water supply, a nuclear power plant and others. Such an event …
Session 10 - Risk Education: Teaching (And Learning) About Technology And Uncertainty In Society, Julian Kilker
Session 10 - Risk Education: Teaching (And Learning) About Technology And Uncertainty In Society, Julian Kilker
International Symposium on Technology and Society
Recently heightened concerns about governmental and corporate surveillance, coupled with long-term social and psychological research on privacy, present both an opportunity and a challenge for discussions about risks and risk assessments related to national security and civil liberties, as well as discussions about the social implications of technology in general. These issues include ethics, assessing uncertainty, balancing risks, and negotiating multidisciplinary expertise. This paper contextualizes the planning, implementing, and responses to several iterations of the Honors course “Who’s watching? Media, privacy, and surveillance,” within the larger topic of pedagogical practices appropriate for examining important, but controversial, topics related to technology …

Session 1 - Cold War Technoscience In Nevada: The Nevada Test Site Oral History Project, Mary Palevsky
International Symposium on Technology and Society
During the Cold War, the United States conducted over 1000 nuclear weapons tests. Of those, 928 took place at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). One hundred tests were in the atmosphere and 921 underground at the 1375 square mile site located 65 north of Las Vegas. Nevada Test Site Oral History Project (NTSOHP) researchers have conducted over 300 hours of interviews with individuals affiliated with and impacted by the NTS, documenting the diversity of experience among many communities of voices including: weapons scientists, test site officials, laborers, contractors and support personnel, the military, American Indians, communities downwind of the NTS, …
