On 9th Oct 2007 at 08:10 Hrs, the accident happened on [Victim No.1] the Asst. Team Leader of [Demining group] EOD-4 while he was shifting UXO to pit. There were three antipersonnel PMN-2 mines near to the UXO and the Asst. Team Leader has stepped on one of these mines which in result the mine exploded and cut off his right leg and he also received some injuries on other parts of his body.

Stood on PMN mine, after accidentally stepping over the front of lane marker. Mine did not function properly and so injuries not consistent with those expected from type of mine.

The accident demolition was the first that day in a row of six demolitions. The target was a 120mm artillery shell. Beforehand we had digged a 1.1 m deep pit away from the closest village and had sandbagged the side towards the village. The shell was moved from where it was found, by hand, into the pit just prior to setting up the demolition. The shell was by purpose put closer to the wall in the pit that faced the village. 1030hrs: Captain [Name removed], the team leader, directed 2nd Sergeant [the Victim], a deminer, to move the UXO about 2 meters from its original place to a pit surrounded by two big rocks for demolition. The deminer was ordered to put a 75 gram TNT block and an electrical detonator at the tail part of the UXO. While the deminer was connecting the wire, the UXO burst into fire by its own and sprayed out flames towards him. The deminer sprang back by instinct to a hollow pit nearby for protection. He got burning injury on face, neck and hands. …
