This qualitative grounded theory designed study identified perceptions of leaders and leadership from the perspective of mid-level fire and emergency services officers. The findings from this study discovered a possible pathway for instilling the philosophy of servant leadership into the fire and emergency services. The study took place at a large metropolitan fire and emergency services agency in the Western United States. The 15 participants in the study were affiliated, uniformed and sworn, mid-level fire and emergency services officers. The purpose of this article was to explore police officerʼs experiences during police vehicle pursuits. Interviews of three US police officers were conducted and the descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to analyze their naive accounts of their lived-experiences. The purpose of this research is to determine if differences in performance outcomes exist between the use of paramilitary instruction and a method of teaching informed by the Chinese philosophy Tài Chí when learning to don structural fire-fighting clothing or personal protective equipment (PPE). We hypothesize that keeping students in a process focus (i.e., Tài Chí method) rather than a high-pressure outcome focus (traditional paramilitary method) results in increased proficiency in the skill-performance outcomes (Selk, 2009).
