An Examination Of The 16pf Validity Scales As Predictors Of The Scale Of Accurate Personality Prediction (Sapp), Katherine E. Schmieder

Theses and Dissertations

The Scale of Accurate Personality Prediction (SAPP) was derived from the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16-PF) as a measure of self-knowledge by comparing the degree of similarity of a participant’s predicted and obtained 16 PF results. The purpose of this study was to examine the utilization of the16PF validity scales as potential predictors of an individual’s score on the Scale of Accurate Personality Prediction (SAPP). A series of multiple regression analyses were performed on the current database of 641 respondents. Additionally, to provide additional validity, the database was split into two halves, and the multiple regression analyses were run on …

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to investigate empirical correlates of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) for Asian Indian college students using the NEO Five Factor Inventory-3, College Maladjustment Scales and Measures of Psychosocial Development. The study utilized an Asian Indian college student sample (N=48) from a private university in Florida. Pearson Product Moment correlations were computed to establish correlates of the MMPI-2-RF scale scores. Overall, a large number of significant correlates with large effect sizes were found across the three measures. Some correlates found in the study provided an expansion for the interpretation of the MMPI-2-RF scales for Asian …

Indonesian Women’S Health Determinants, Victoria A. Mcgrady Dec 2016

Indonesian Women’S Health Determinants, Victoria A. Mcgrady

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized the Indonesian Family Life Survey 5 to investigate the relationships between broad health outcomes and selected biopsychosocial measures. The study population was comprised of 17,480 Indonesian women who ranged in age from 15 years to 103 years with a mean age of 38.27 years. The results of this study showed the biopsychosocial model of health is valid for Indonesian women. Results supported the assumption that the measures of physical health (acute morbidity and medically diagnosed chronic conditions) are significantly correlated with the measures of psychological health (depression, and subjective wellbeing). Results also supported the assumption that biopsychosocial …

Use Of The Mmpi-2 Masculine-Feminine Pathology Scale In Determining Gender-Related Symptom Expressions Among Outpatients, Priyanka M. Parikh Dec 2016

Use Of The Mmpi-2 Masculine-Feminine Pathology Scale In Determining Gender-Related Symptom Expressions Among Outpatients, Priyanka M. Parikh

Theses and Dissertations

Gender exerts a strong influence over psychopathology experience and expression. The Masculine-Feminine Pathology (Mfp) scale is a recently developed research scale for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Second Edition (MMPI-2), intended to reflect gender-influenced psychopathological symptoms. The current study was designed to examine whether Mfp scores serve as a useful moderator in the interpretation of MMPI-2 scores in terms of identifying gender-related symptom expression in an outpatient adult psychiatric sample. The sample consisted of 186 participants who had undergone outpatient psychotherapy. MMPI-2 scales include selected clinical scales, Restructured Clinical (RC) scales, content scales, supplementary scales, and Personality Psychopathology-Five (PSY-5) scales …

Psychological Well-Being And Heart Disease: The Utility Of Mental Health And Management Plans, Jennifer Anne Heath Nov 2016

Psychological Well-Being And Heart Disease: The Utility Of Mental Health And Management Plans, Jennifer Anne Heath

Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the correlation between mental health and coronary heart disease (CHD) and the usefulness of including mental health treatment into disease management plans. Consistent with previous research and literature regarding the correlation between CHD and depression, results suggest individuals experiencing CHD experience more symptoms of depression, including feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness. Additionally, individuals with CHD also tend to experience more difficulty with relationships and completing household chores. Individuals who have management plans created by their healthcare providers experience less depressive symptoms than those without management plans. This suggests management plans are crucial in the treatment of mental …

Examining The Relationships Of Socioeconomic Status, Perceived Parental Supervision, And Reported Neighborhood Safety On Adolescents’ Smoking Behaviors And Mental Health Using The 2009 California Health Interview Survey, Colette Laroy Beetz

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought out to explore the relationships between parental supervision, poverty levels, and neighborhood safety and the impacts these factors have upon adolescent mental health needs, intervention, and smoking status. In addition, ethnicity groupings and poverty levels were examined to determine additional influence factors on mental health issues. The findings demonstrate that higher levels parental supervision and neighborhood safety predict higher reports of not needing mental health treatment and lower reports of smoking. In relation to mental health treatment, only poverty level demonstrated a significant contribution, suggesting that the lower the poverty level, the less likely treatment will be …

Does Benevolence Benefit? Understanding The Role Of Benevolent Sexism Sub-Factors In Predicting Sexual Aggression Among Men, Alyssa Nicole Shilinsky Aug 2016

Does Benevolence Benefit? Understanding The Role Of Benevolent Sexism Sub-Factors In Predicting Sexual Aggression Among Men, Alyssa Nicole Shilinsky

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual aggression remains a pervasive problem in our society, with approximately one in five women reporting an unwanted sexual experience (Koss et al., 2007). A key construct associated with sexual aggression may be the endorsement of sexist beliefs, which have been conceptualized along two domains: Hostile and benevolent sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996).Hostile sexist beliefs can predict engagement in sexual aggression (Malamuth et al.,1995); however, there is a paucity of research examining the influence of benevolent sexism on sexual aggression perpetration. The goal of this study is to explore the relationship between the three sub-factors of benevolent sexism (protective paternalism, …

Neural Circuitry Underlying The Intrusion Of Task-Irrelevant Threat Into Working Memory In Anxiety, Daniel Stout Aug 2016

Neural Circuitry Underlying The Intrusion Of Task-Irrelevant Threat Into Working Memory In Anxiety, Daniel Stout

Theses and Dissertations

Dispositional anxiety is an important risk factor for the development of anxiety and other psychological disorders. Symptoms commonly expressed by highly anxious individuals include intrusive memories, uncertainty, and worry — all occurring in the absence of immediate threat. This raises the possibility that anxious individuals have difficulty governing threat’s access to working memory, the mental workspace where goal-related information is actively retained for guiding on-going behavior. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while 81 subjects completed a well-validated working memory task, I show that threat-related and neutral distracters unnecessarily gain access to working memory, as evidenced by increased neural activity …

Examining Heightened Sense Of Incompleteness As A Candidate Endophenotypic Marker For Skin Picking Disorder, Ivar Snorrason Aug 2016

Examining Heightened Sense Of Incompleteness As A Candidate Endophenotypic Marker For Skin Picking Disorder, Ivar Snorrason

Theses and Dissertations

Excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) shares genetic underpinnings with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and the phenomenology of both disorders is characterized by heightened sense of incompleteness or “not just right” experiences. The aim of the study was to examine if a general tendency for heightened sense of incompleteness (trait incompleteness) can serve as an endophenotypic maker of SPD. Individuals with SPD (n=32) and matched healthy controls (n=42) completed two validated self-report measures of trait incompleteness and rated photographs designed to evoke a sense of incompleteness. Additionally, unaffected first-degree relatives of the SPD group (n=18) and the control group (n=22) completed the same set …

Clarifying The Influence Of Comorbid Depression On Response Inhibition In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Trichotillomania, Gregory Berlin Aug 2016

Clarifying The Influence Of Comorbid Depression On Response Inhibition In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Trichotillomania, Gregory Berlin

Theses and Dissertations

Response inhibition performance in Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRDs) is emerging as a potential neurocognitive endophenotype of these disorders. A point of needed clarification, however, is how unique such performance is to the OCRD spectrum. Specifically, it is unknown whether comorbid depression, a disorder that frequently occurs with OCRDs (60-80%) (Pallanti et al., 2011) and is also associated with cognitive deficits, can influence response inhibition observed in OCRDs. We sought to clarify whether response inhibition performance could be reliably accounted for OCRD symptomology (in obsessive compulsive disorder and trichotillomania specifically) even when taking into consideration the influence of comorbid depression. …

Is The Therapeutic Alliance Associated With And Predictive Of Treatment Retention And Outcome Among Latinos?: A Secondary Analysis Of An Rct Of Behavioral Activation For Latinos With Depression Versus Treatment-As-Usual, Maria Magdalena Santos Aug 2016

Is The Therapeutic Alliance Associated With And Predictive Of Treatment Retention And Outcome Among Latinos?: A Secondary Analysis Of An Rct Of Behavioral Activation For Latinos With Depression Versus Treatment-As-Usual, Maria Magdalena Santos

Theses and Dissertations

A robust association between the therapeutic alliance and various forms of psychotherapy outcome has been demonstrated. The therapist-client alliance has been shown to be associated with and predictive of dropout and depression symptom change with primarily U.S. White samples. The current study examines whether the alliance is associated with retention, as measured by dropout and session attendance, and depression change in a sample of low-income Spanish-speaking Latinos in the U.S. who received Behavioral Activation for Latinos (BAL) with depression or treatment-as-usual (TAU). Given the proposition that BA treatment fosters the alliance systematically throughout treatment, and that usual treatment was not …

Supervision Of Primary Care Behavioral Health Trainees: A Survey Of Current Practices, Karly Anna Branch

Theses and Dissertations

The current study surveyed 39 supervisors of primary care (PC) psychology trainees at the practicum, internship, and postdoctoral levels regarding various aspects of training, including structure and techniques used, expected competencies, perceived barriers, and their own supervision training received. These results provide a descriptive analysis of current practices of the sampled PC psychology supervisors, which are intended to inform development of best practices in supervision of PC psychology trainees. No statistically significant group differences between training levels regarding the number of competencies trainees were expected to achieve prior to program entry were found; however, sample size was a limitation. Implications …

Contributions Of Fatigue, Pain, And Functional Limitation To Future Depression In Cancer Survivors, Thomas Santo Recine Jul 2016

Contributions Of Fatigue, Pain, And Functional Limitation To Future Depression In Cancer Survivors, Thomas Santo Recine

Theses and Dissertations

This study expanded upon Green (2014)’s study and examined the unique contributions of fatigue, pain, and functional limitation to future depression (depression measured at a later point in time) in cancer survivors. The findings demonstrate that functional impairment and fatigue are both strongly associated with subsequent depression. These findings follow from and are consistent with Green’s (2014) study, and demonstrate that functional impairment and fatigue strongly impact ongoing and future depression, with higher levels of functional impairment and fatigue being associated with higher levels of future depression. As a whole, the findings of this study are commensurate with prior research. …

The Association Between Parenting Factors And Light And Moderate-To-Vigorous Physical Activity Levels In Overweight African American Adolescents, Lauren E. Huffman Jun 2016

The Association Between Parenting Factors And Light And Moderate-To-Vigorous Physical Activity Levels In Overweight African American Adolescents, Lauren E. Huffman

Theses and Dissertations

Overweight adolescents are less likely to meet physical activity (PA) recommendations as compared to healthy weight youth. Family environment and parenting practices may influence PA rates in adolescents, but few studies have examined this relationship in African American youth. The current study expands on past literature by examining associations between parenting factors and daily light PA (LPA), MVPA, and total PA. It was hypothesized that parenting factors would be positively associated with PA and that practices specific to PA (autonomy support for PA, emotional support, tangible support, and modeling) would be more strongly associated with PA outcomes compared to more …

The Influence Of Adhd Symptoms And Social Impairment On Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In 8- To 10-Year-Old Children, Danielle Brooke Willis Jun 2016

The Influence Of Adhd Symptoms And Social Impairment On Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In 8- To 10-Year-Old Children, Danielle Brooke Willis

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has shown that Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with impaired social functioning in children and adolescents. ADHD and increased social impairment have proven to be separately correlated with increased anxiety and depression symptoms as well. However, little research has examined these specific associations and interactions among ADHD, social functioning, and internalizing symptoms. The current study aimed to examine the influence of ADHD symptoms and social functioning on anxiety and depression symptoms in 321 8- to 10- year-old children, and specifically, if social impairment moderated the relation between ADHD symptoms and anxiety and depression symptoms. Data on ADHD, social …

Attention Deficits And Perception Of Emotion In Groups, Agnes Renee Strojewska Jun 2016

Attention Deficits And Perception Of Emotion In Groups, Agnes Renee Strojewska

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the relationship between attention deficits and the recognition of emotions of either individuals or groups (ensembles). Previous research has suggested that individuals with ADHD may have deficits in social cognition, specifically in recognizing the internal (emotional) states of others, though it remains unclear whether these deficits are a discrete component of ADHD or merely the byproduct of the inattention characteristic of the disorder. Perception of ensemble characteristics, or ensemble coding, has recently been the target of increased interest in perception research, and appears to represent a powerful mechanism for processing sensory information, particularly in situations when …

Disruptive Behavior Disorders In Childhood And Criminal Justice System Involvement In Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood: Pilot Results Among Puerto Rican Youth, Marjorine Castillo

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) in childhood and arrest during adolescence and emerging adulthood was explored in a community sample of 162 Puerto Rican children who lived in the South Bronx, NYC when first recruited. Results indicate a significant link between having DBD in childhood and later arrest.

Eye Movement Effects In Simulated Object Recognition Memory Impairment, Dmitriy Kazakov May 2016

Eye Movement Effects In Simulated Object Recognition Memory Impairment, Dmitriy Kazakov

Theses and Dissertations

Malingering is the purposeful fabrication of symptoms for secondary gain. Memory problems are the most reported symptom, and object recognition tests are often used in clinical settings to evaluate these claims. Past research has shown that eye movements can indirectly index memory, in that greater viewing is directed at studied stimuli 500-750 ms after display onset. The present study evaluated eye movements as a potential method of detecting feigned memory impairment. Forty-eight participants, half simulators, studied standardized images and took a memory test. Several levels of analysis were used to detect broad trends and brief effects. Simulators performed significantly worse …

Relations Between Lab-Based And Parent-Reported Executive Functioning In Children And Adolescents With Williams Syndrome, Gregor Nathanael Pau Schwarz May 2016

Relations Between Lab-Based And Parent-Reported Executive Functioning In Children And Adolescents With Williams Syndrome, Gregor Nathanael Pau Schwarz

Theses and Dissertations

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by lowered cognitive abilities and significant attention and executive functioning (EF) difficulties. The current study constitutes the first investigating the relevance of performance on an EF task measuring one or more of the “core” EF’s (inhibition, shifting, working memory) to EF behaviors observed by parents of youth with WS. Parent-ratings of their children indicated more EF difficulties in all domains compared to the general population. Performance on the EF task (correct trials during the last phase of the Dimensional Change Card Sort) predicted parent reported general EF difficulties, metacognition, working memory …

Cannabis Use And Affective Processing: A Brain Structure Analysis, Kristin E. Maple May 2016

Cannabis Use And Affective Processing: A Brain Structure Analysis, Kristin E. Maple

Theses and Dissertations

Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug amongst adolescents and young adults in the United States. Previously, cannabis and its components have been associated with differences in affective processing and neural functioning. Participants (ages 16-25) were cannabis users and non-users excluded for psychiatric disorders, major medical conditions, and excessive other drug use. A series of multiple regressions examined whether past year cannabis use and cannabis x gender predicted measures of emotional face processing (using the PennCNP affective battery) as well as volumes in bilateral prefrontal, temporal, limbic, and cerebellar regions, as well as frontolimbic white matter tracts. Subsequently, Pearson …

Testing The Effects Of Attention Training At Later Stages Of Processing Among Socially Anxious Individuals: A Web-Based Randomized Controlled Trial, Taylor Davine May 2016

Testing The Effects Of Attention Training At Later Stages Of Processing Among Socially Anxious Individuals: A Web-Based Randomized Controlled Trial, Taylor Davine

Theses and Dissertations

Attention bias (AB) modification training is an emerging intervention for the treatment of social anxiety disorder. Research has shown that attenuation of AB leads to reductions of social-anxiety symptoms. To date, researchers have relied primarily on the AB modification paradigm that is designed to improve disengagement from threatening stimuli at early stages of attentional processing. Numerous AB modification studies have demonstrated that individuals who show reductions in AB to threat also show improvement in clinical outcome (e.g., diagnosis, symptoms). These studies provide support for the theory that AB may be a mechanism that causes and/or maintains emotional disorders such as …

Depression Among African American Midlife Women: Delineating The Role Of Stress, Heather Page Jan 2016

Depression Among African American Midlife Women: Delineating The Role Of Stress, Heather Page

Theses and Dissertations

Recent multi-ethnic epidemiologic studies indicate an increased risk for the onset of new as well as recurrent episodes of clinical depression among midlife women. However, little is known about the risk factors that influence the occurrence, severity, and course of depression in midlife among African American women (AAW). The purpose of the current study was to statistically model three prevailing conceptual views of stress and depression: 1) life course, 2) stress exposure, and 3) stress generation). The research investigated the abilities of these conceptual models to predict depressive symptoms severity, current depressed days, and major depression among midlife AAW. Data …

Exploring The Relationship Between Church Level Predictors Of Status And Obesity Risk In African American Women Of Faith, Kinjal Pandya Jan 2016

Exploring The Relationship Between Church Level Predictors Of Status And Obesity Risk In African American Women Of Faith, Kinjal Pandya

Theses and Dissertations

Although obesity is a nationwide epidemic, there are large racial, gender, socioeconomic, and geographical disparities in the rates of this condition. Specifically, African American women are more likely to be classified as obese as compared to all other gender and racial groups. Scholars have targeted African American churches to implement dietary and physical activity interventions in an attempt to combat the racial disparity in obesity rates. One of the main correlates studied in regards to obesity has been individual level markers of status such as socioeconomic status and subjective social status. Even though we focus on churches as a place …

The Consequences Of Alcohol Mixed With Energy Drink (Amed) Use In College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Brooke A. Green Jan 2016

The Consequences Of Alcohol Mixed With Energy Drink (Amed) Use In College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Brooke A. Green

Theses and Dissertations

College students with ADHD, but especially those who consume alcohol, may be at jeopardy for experiencing negative educational and occupational outcomes, problematic substance use, criminal offending, and sexual victimization. Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) use is widespread across college campuses and associated with many of these same problematic outcomes. The risk of experiencing these consequences for college students with ADHD may be exacerbated by AmED use given its unique relationship, above and beyond alcohol use, with these variables. This study sought to examine relationships among GPA, lost work performance, hazardous alcohol use, illicit substance use, criminal offending, and sexual …

Evaluating The Pennebaker Paradigm With Bereaved Emerging Adults: Applications Of Text Analysis, Elizabeth A. Collison Jan 2016

Evaluating The Pennebaker Paradigm With Bereaved Emerging Adults: Applications Of Text Analysis, Elizabeth A. Collison

Theses and Dissertations

Bereavement is an important research area as it can result in grief reactions that lead to serious psychological and health consequences, particularly for the at-risk group of emerging adults (Arnett, 2000; Balk, Walker, & Baker, 2010; Fisher, Murray, & Frazer, 1985; Stroebe, Schut, & Stroebe, 2007). Expressive writing is a well-researched intervention for trauma and adjustment, yet research repeatedly has revealed null results with the classic Pennebaker paradigm as a bereavement intervention (Stroebe et al., 2002; Stroebe, Schut, & Stroebe, 2006). It may be premature, however, to conclude expressive writing is ineffective for the bereaved due to limitations in extant …

Positive Illusory Bias In Adolescents With Adhd: Prevalence, Stability, And Accuracy Of Reporters, Elizaveta Bourchtein Jan 2016

Positive Illusory Bias In Adolescents With Adhd: Prevalence, Stability, And Accuracy Of Reporters, Elizaveta Bourchtein

Theses and Dissertations

The positive illusory bias (PIB) – over-reporting levels of self-competence compared to other raters – has been demonstrated in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), despite increased impairment rates. However, due to inconsistent definitions of the PIB, conflicting findings have emerged regarding prevalence of the PIB in youth with ADHD and whether parent or child report is actually “biased” and driving the PIB. Additionally, stability of the PIB across time is unknown. The present study used person-centered methodology cross-sectionally and longitudinally to evaluate the prevalence of the PIB in adolescents with ADHD. Results revealed a cross-domain global PIB group at baseline …

Representativeness Of Patients Enrolled In A Primary Care Clinical Trial For Substance Use Disorders, Sydney S. Kelpin Jan 2016

Representativeness Of Patients Enrolled In A Primary Care Clinical Trial For Substance Use Disorders, Sydney S. Kelpin

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the characteristics of research participants is crucial to ensuring sample representativeness and generalizability of findings to broader patient groups with substance use disorders. Using anonymous computer-administered health survey data, the present study had a unique opportunity to compare patients who chose to participate in an RCT for heavy/problem drinking or drug use (N=713; consenters) with those that chose not to participate (N=625; non-consenters). The sample was 40% male, 76% African American, and had a mean age of 45.2 years. Using multivariate regression, the most parsimonious model found older age, unemployment, prescription misuse, positive screen for drug problems (CAGE), having …

Reciprocal Relations Between Traumatic Stress And Physical Aggression During Middle School, Erin L. Thompson Jan 2016

Reciprocal Relations Between Traumatic Stress And Physical Aggression During Middle School, Erin L. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

There is convincing evidence that demonstrates traumatic stress and aggressive behavior are highly related among adolescents. The evidence is less clear regarding the direction of this relation. The purpose of this study was to examine the reciprocal longitudinal relations between physical aggression and traumatic stress among a predominantly African American sample of middle school students. Support was found for traumatic stress predicting increased levels of physical aggression across the winter to the spring of the sixth grade for boys and across all waves from the fall of the seventh grade to the fall of the eighth grade for both boys …
