Psychological Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) And Child Adjustment In A Context Of Previous Physical Ipv, Tricia Gower Dec 2020

Psychological Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) And Child Adjustment In A Context Of Previous Physical Ipv, Tricia Gower

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Physical and psychological IPV often co-occur, and are both potential risk factors for child adjustment problems; however, their joint relation with child adjustment problems is not well understood. The current study examined whether previous physical IPV augmented the relation between current psychological IPV and child threat appraisals and child internalizing symptoms. Participants were 506 children aged 7-10 (Mage = 8.49; 48% female) and their mothers (Mage = 36.32) recruited from the community. Children reported on IPV between mothers and mothers’ partners, child threat appraisals, and child internalizing symptoms. Mothers reported on child internalizing symptoms. Previous physical IPV, conceptualized based on …

Disaggregating Within- And Between-Person Variation In The Prospective Relations Between Acculturation Gap-Distress And Psychological Adjustment, Savannah Pham Dec 2020

Disaggregating Within- And Between-Person Variation In The Prospective Relations Between Acculturation Gap-Distress And Psychological Adjustment, Savannah Pham

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

According to acculturation gap-distress theory, parent-offspring differences in cultural orientations set the stage for intergenerational cultural conflict, which may contribute to poor psychological adjustment among Asian American offspring. Although cross-sectional research has demonstrated robust links between intergenerational cultural conflict and poor psychological adjustment, a small number of longitudinal studies have yielded mixed evidence for the theorized pathway of acculturation gap-distress. To address limitations of existing research, I aimed to examine between- and within-person associations between intergenerational cultural conflict and psychological adjustment in a three-wave longitudinal panel study. Participants were Asian American first-year college students (N = 475; 55.6% women; …

Social Anxiety, Depression, And Emotional Congruence, Talha Alvi Aug 2020

Social Anxiety, Depression, And Emotional Congruence, Talha Alvi

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Social anxiety and depression are associated with interpretation biases and impairment in social cognitive ability (e.g., understanding the mental states of others), yet there is little known about their associations with emotional congruence (i.e., the extent to which a perceiver shares the emotional experience of a target). The present study examined the association between dimensional levels of social anxiety, depression, and emotional congruence, as well as the moderating role of anhedonia and stimuli valence. Neither social anxiety nor depressive symptoms significantly predicted emotional congruence. Further, no significant associations were found when including the moderators following multiple test correction. Although previous …

A Mindfulness-Based Physical Activity Intervention: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial, Margarita Sala Aug 2020

A Mindfulness-Based Physical Activity Intervention: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial, Margarita Sala

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The aim of this pilot randomized controlled trial was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an audio-recorded mindfulness-based physical activity intervention as compared to an active control condition. I also examined affective response and distress tolerance during exercise as two putative mediators of the intervention. Methods: Community participants (N = 50) were randomized to a mindfulness intervention or active control group. Results: The audio-recorded mindfulness-based physical activity intervention was acceptable (i.e., well liked, M = 7.94, SD = 1.67) and feasible (i.e., percentage of use, M = 83.94%, SD = 20.65%). The intervention also resulted in …

Affective Reactivity To Real-Life Acute Stress: The Role Of Chronic Stress, Physical Activity, And Sleep, Hannah Nordberg Jul 2020

Affective Reactivity To Real-Life Acute Stress: The Role Of Chronic Stress, Physical Activity, And Sleep, Hannah Nordberg

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

Prior research indicates that exposure to chronic stress increases allostatic load and alters individuals’ response to stressful situations, with evidence for both exaggerated and blunted emotional responses. Recent studies have also linked lifestyle factors such as poor sleep and insufficient physical activity with elevated negative mood in response to stress. The present study extends upon prior work by investigating interactions between chronic stress, physical activity, and sleep as predictors of affective reactivity during real-life sustained stress. Students (N=637) were assessed during an academic semester and end-of-term final exam period. Self-report ratings of negative affect, acute stress levels, anxious and depressed …

Parent-Directed Gratitude: An Investigation Of A Novel Intervention And Possible Mechanisms Between Gratitude And Well-Being, Margaret Smith Jul 2020

Parent-Directed Gratitude: An Investigation Of A Novel Intervention And Possible Mechanisms Between Gratitude And Well-Being, Margaret Smith

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

First-year college students are vulnerable to developing psychopathology during the transition to college. Gratitude interventions have been effective at decreasing depressive symptoms and increasing well-being. There are mixed findings on whether gratitude directed toward a specific person is more effective than a general expression of gratitude. The present investigation has two research aims from a data collection involving a three-group randomized gratitude intervention study and a short-term longitudinal mediation model. The first research aim evaluated group comparisons related to well-being, positive affect, satisfaction with life, depressive symptoms, and quality of the parent-child relationship. The second research aim investigated the mechanisms …

Mother-Child Informant Discrepancies Of Child Internalizing Symptoms: Maternal Depression, Mother-Child Relationship Quality, And Family Environment As Moderators, Sharyl Esther Wee Jul 2020

Mother-Child Informant Discrepancies Of Child Internalizing Symptoms: Maternal Depression, Mother-Child Relationship Quality, And Family Environment As Moderators, Sharyl Esther Wee

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, 14.3% of adolescents have experienced an internalizing disorder. There are, however, often large discrepancies between parent and child reports of the child’s symptoms, which can affect diagnoses and treatment outcomes (Hawley & Weisz, 2003; Kazdin, 1989). Maternal depressive symptoms have been associated with mother-child informant discrepancies of child internalizing symptoms (e.g., Chi & Hinshaw, 2002). Other characteristics of the parent-child relationship and family environment that may predict informant discrepancies have only been examined limitedly (e.g., Treutler & Epkins, 2003). The purpose of the present study was to test the extent to which maternal, family, and child …
