To date, emergent leadership literature has not clearly indicated what variables influence group members' perception and subsequent selection of a group leader. One approach to the study of this problem has been to analyze group members' verbal behavior to identify empirically behaviors which are more frequent among leaders than nonleaders within a task group. The basic assumption underlying this approach appears to be that a group selects as its leader that individual from the group who most frequently exhibits some specific "leadership behavior(s)." Thirty-eight subjects selected on the basis of extreme REP test scores participated in a task requiring them to make ratings of comfort when presented with hypothetical persons with differing personality attributes. Attribute sets were composed of five bipolar construct dimensions determined individually for each subject by extracting constructs that were mutually unrelated (differentiated) or mutually related (undifferentiated). Subjects rated each of 32 different attribute combinations. An investigation was carried out to test Sternberg’s stage theory using his additive-factor method. Three factors were proposed that would have additive effects on RT and two factors that would not. Ss were presented stimuli in the form of colors and sound frequencies under varying combinations of mode, stimulus quality, list length, and response type. Ss were also blocked according to sex. Results revealed only stimulus quality and list length to be additive. Response type interacted with list length. Males were faster than females but the sex factor was differentially influencing two of the proposed stages in Sternberg’s model. The …

Despite considerable interest in the problem of creativity, both in psychology and in other fields, there is still no standard definition of the term. Guilford (1 9 6 7 ) defines creativity by making a distinction between convergent thinking and divergent thinking. In convergent thinking, according to Guilford, there is a single right answer or best answer to a problem, while in divergent thinking there is not. He uses the term divergent thinking interchangeably with creativity.
