Recent neuroimaging research shows that older adults exhibit recruitment, or increased activation on various cognitive tasks. The current study evaluated whether a similar pattern also occurs in semantic memory by evaluating age-related differences during recognition of Recent (since the 1990s) and Enduring (1950s to present) famous names. Fifteen healthy older and 15 healthy younger adults performed the name recognition task with a high and comparable degree of accuracy, although older adults had slower reaction time in response to Recent famous names. Event-related functional MRI showed extensive networks of activation in the two groups including posterior cingulate, right hippocampus, temporal lobe …

The Role Of Depression In Withdrawal From Renal Dialysis, Elizabeth Mcdade-Montez, Alan Christensen, Jaime Cvengros, William Lawton
The Role Of Depression In Withdrawal From Renal Dialysis, Elizabeth Mcdade-Montez, Alan Christensen, Jaime Cvengros, William Lawton
Alan J. Christensen
Among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis, death from withdrawal from life-sustaining dialysis is increasingly common. The present study's objective was to examine depression as a potential risk factor for hemodialysis withdrawal. Two hundred forty ESRD hemodialysis (133 male and 107 female) patients were followed for an average of 4 years after depression symptom assessment. Of these, 18% withdrew from dialysis. Using multivariate survival analysis and after controlling for the effects of age (p = .001) and clinical variables, the authors found that level of depression symptoms was a unique and significant predictive risk factor for the subsequent decision …
Group Differences And Measurement Equivalence: Implications For Command Climate Survey Research And Practice, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface, Adam Meade, Lori Foster Thompson, Don Martin
Group Differences And Measurement Equivalence: Implications For Command Climate Survey Research And Practice, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface, Adam Meade, Lori Foster Thompson, Don Martin
Erich C. Dierdorff
Military organizations use survey methodology to assess attitudes related to command climate. Many commands are staffed with both military and civilian personnel. However, no previous research has examined the equivalence of a command climate survey’s measurement properties across these types of personnel. Differences in the personnel systems and organizational socialization could lead to different views of various facets of a command climate survey, making direct comparisons or aggregations of group-level data inappropriate. Furthermore, men and women may also view aspects of command climate surveys differently. Using two administrations of a command climate survey in a U.S. Major Army Command, our …
Inequalities Of Crime, Kathleen Daly, Robyn Lincoln
Inequalities Of Crime, Kathleen Daly, Robyn Lincoln

This chapter explores seven major propositions on the relationship between crime and social inequality, moving from the societal level to the individual criminal act. We then turn to the image that criminologists have of inequalities of people and the ways they explain the disproportionate presence of disadvantaged groups in the criminal justice system. This image, which we term the familiar analysis of inequality, focuses on class, and to a lesser extent, on race/ethnicity and age. However, the familiar analysis has a major flaw: It ignores sex/gender. When sex/gender is drawn into the analysis, two observations can be made. The first …

Markov Chain Analyses Of Communication Processes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith, Laurie Weingart
Markov Chain Analyses Of Communication Processes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith, Laurie Weingart
Mara Olekalns
Markov chain analysis provides a way to investigate how the communication processes in dyadic negotiations are affected by features of the negotiating context and how, in turn, differences in communication processes among dyads affect the quality of the final settlement. In Markov models, the communication process is represented as a sequence of transitions between states, which describes how tactics are used and how they are reciprocated during the course of a negotiation. This article provides an introduction to Markov chain analysis and shows, using simulated data, how Markov chain models may be analyzed using widely-available loglinear modeling software. Model selection, …

A Randomized Trial To Assess The Impact Of Direct Reporting Of Dxa Scan Results To Patients On Quality Of Osteoporosis Care, Peter Cram, Janet Schlechte, Alan Christensen
Alan J. Christensen
Consecutive patients identified as having osteoporosis on screening dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans were randomized to: (1) a patient activation intervention consisting of mailing patients their DXA scan results supplemented by a call from a nurse educator or (2) usual care. Three months after the DXA scan, patients were contacted to assess: (1) use of antiresorptive therapy, (2) osteoporosis specific knowledge, and (3) satisfaction with their osteoporosis-related care. A total of 1,035 consecutive patients were screened to identify 422 eligible patients. Of these, 56 patients met inclusion criteria and were subsequently randomized. At follow-up, use of antiresorptive agents was numerically …
