Adjustment In Mothers Of Children With Asperger Syndrome: An Application Of The Double Abcx Model Of Family Adjustment, Kenneth Pakenham, Christina Samios, Kate Sofronoff

The present study examined the applicability of the double ABCX model of family adjustment in explaining maternal adjustment to caring for a child diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Forty-seven mothers completed questionnaires at a university clinic while their children were participating in an anxiety intervention. The children were aged between 10 and 12 years. Results of correlations showed that each of the model components was related to one or more domains of maternal adjustment in the direction predicted, with the exception of problem-focused coping. Providing care and support to a relative or friend who has an illness, disease or disability is widely held to be a task which requires extensive emotional and physical resources and one which can place considerable strain on the carer. Over the last four decades a growing body of research has emerged, both in Australia and internationally, demonstrating the adverse physical, psychological, social and financial effects that caring can have on the well being of carers.
