Targeting Parental Behavior: Contingency Contracting To Increase Parental Competence And Adherence, Sara Clasky Richardson Jan 2023

Targeting Parental Behavior: Contingency Contracting To Increase Parental Competence And Adherence, Sara Clasky Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of using behavior contracts specifically targeting parental behavior and providing reinforcing consequences for the parent’s behavior on parental adherence in implementing behavior contracts to address their child’s behavior problems. Parents used identical procedures to implement behavior contracts with their children to address their child’s noncompliance and associated problem behavior. A secondary purpose of this study was to determine parent perceptions about the impact their use of behavior contracts had on the behavior of their children.

This study used a multiple baseline across participants design to measure the effectiveness of a …

Brief And Extended Effects Of Modified Competing Stimulus Assessments, Soray Nicole Castro Dec 2022

Brief And Extended Effects Of Modified Competing Stimulus Assessments, Soray Nicole Castro

Theses and Dissertations

Competing stimulus assessments (CSA) are pre-assessment tools that systematically identify stimuli associated with reduced problem behavior. The current study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an augmented CSA containing components of prompted engagement and response blocking. Results indicated the augmented CSA effectively identified two additional competing items for two of the three participants following prompted engagement. We also evaluated the extended effects of the competing stimuli on item engagement and stereotypy for two participants. Stereotypy reductive effects are maintained for one of the four competing stimuli for Participant 2 and two of the six items for Participant 3.

The Effects Of Teaching Children To Tact Their Emotions On Problem Behavior, Haley Nicole Harber Jul 2022

The Effects Of Teaching Children To Tact Their Emotions On Problem Behavior, Haley Nicole Harber

Theses and Dissertations

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often struggle to understand and describe private events, such as emotions. When an individual cannot communicate appropriately, it can lead to various problem behaviors. Previous literature suggested that we teach children to tact their emotions (e.g., "I am sad," "I am angry") in an attempt to decrease their problem behavior. The primary purpose of the current study is to teach children with autism to tact their emotions. The secondary purpose is to evaluate the effects of empathy statements on problem behavior. Four children participated, three with problem behavior maintained by access to tangibles and …

Teacher Choice-Allocation Of Delayed Treatment Outcomes Based On Severity Of Student Problem Behavior, Natalia Victoria Colón Dec 2021

Teacher Choice-Allocation Of Delayed Treatment Outcomes Based On Severity Of Student Problem Behavior, Natalia Victoria Colón

Theses and Dissertations

Delay discounting is the systematic preference for smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later rewards, particularly as the delay to the larger, later reward is increased. It is used to explain impulsivity. Monetary rewards have been most frequently studied; however, impulsivity has also been represented with behavioral treatment outcomes for maladaptive behavior where a caregiver is responsible for its implementation (Call et al., 2015; Scheithauer et al., 2020). Maladaptive behavior is a common concern among families with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Long-term improvements are not uncommon in behavior analysis. It may be detrimental to client gains if caregivers discount longer acting …

Understanding The Contributions Of Discrepant Parent-Adolescent Views Of Parenting Practices And Peer Deviance To Adolescent Problem Behavior: A Cross-Lagged Polynomial Regression Approach, Mallory Stephenson Jan 2020

Understanding The Contributions Of Discrepant Parent-Adolescent Views Of Parenting Practices And Peer Deviance To Adolescent Problem Behavior: A Cross-Lagged Polynomial Regression Approach, Mallory Stephenson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study used autoregressive cross-lagged models to examine the processes through which peer deviance and discrepant parent-adolescent views of monitoring-related communication, involvement, and positive parenting influence one another and contribute to physical and relational aggression, substance use, and delinquency. Participants included 535 adolescents (64% male) who were identified as prone to aggression and socially influential by their sixth-grade teachers during the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 school years; participants self-identified as African American (69%), Hispanic (14%), White (9%), Multiracial (5%), or another race (3%). Contrary to expectations, parent-adolescent reporting discrepancies were not related to peer deviance, physical aggression, substance use, and …

Training Technicians To Conduct Trial-Based Functional Analyses Via Telehealth, Kacie Mcgarry Jul 2019

Training Technicians To Conduct Trial-Based Functional Analyses Via Telehealth, Kacie Mcgarry

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have supported the use of trial-based functional analysis performed by teachers in classroom settings. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of training technicians to conduct trial-based functional analyses via telehealth. Telehealth-based training was effective for producing high-integrity implementation by technicians and that using Trial-Based Functional Analyses in classrooms resulted in an efficient means of conducting functional analysis in areas with limited resources.

Using Functional Communication Training With Extinction To Reduce Attention-Maintained Problem Behavior: A Novel Application To A Spanish-Speaking Family With English-Speaking Therapists, Roger Kyle Caldwell May 2018

Using Functional Communication Training With Extinction To Reduce Attention-Maintained Problem Behavior: A Novel Application To A Spanish-Speaking Family With English-Speaking Therapists, Roger Kyle Caldwell

Theses and Dissertations

Functional communication training (FCT) is a well-established treatment for problem behavior that involves arranging extinction for undesirable responses and providing reinforcement for an appropriate communicative response. However, language barriers between the therapist and the client’s caregivers may inhibit the efficacy of this intervention and solutions to these language barriers have not been discussed in the research literature. The current study replicated functional analysis and FCT procedures with a child with autism and Down syndrome presenting with severe aggressive behavior whose parents were native Spanish speakers with limited English proficiency. We detail our process and procedural modifications made to address these …

Treatment Of Problem Behavior Multiply Maintained By Access To Tangible Items And Escape From Demands, Margaret Rachel Gifford May 2018

Treatment Of Problem Behavior Multiply Maintained By Access To Tangible Items And Escape From Demands, Margaret Rachel Gifford

Theses and Dissertations

Functional analysis is a behavioral assessment that identifies sources of operant reinforcement that maintain problem behavior. These assessments may identify single reinforcers (e.g., positive reinforcement in the form of attention) or multiple reinforcers (e.g., positive reinforcement in the form of attention and negative reinforcement in the form of escape from instructions) for the same behavior. In such cases, analysts will design interventions for each identified “function” but the sequencing of these interventions may impact their success at treating problem behavior. The current study evaluated the sequential treatment of problem behavior for a child whose functional analysis identified sensitivity to multiple …
