Testing Gender Effects On The Mechanisms Explaining The Association Between Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms And Substance Use Frequency, Marina Bornovalova, Paige Ouimette, Aaron V Crawford, Roy Levy

Psychology Faculty Publications

The present study examines gender differences in the mechanisms that explain the association between PTSD symptoms and substance use frequency in a sample of 182 urban substance users. Specifically, the current study examined gender differences in the role of two potential explanatory variables, namely, difficulties controlling impulsive behavior when distressed (IMP), and a lack of emotional awareness and clarity (AW/CLAR). Multiple-group path modeling (across males and females) was used to examine gender differences in the path coefficients from PTSD symptoms to IMP and AW/CLAR, and from these latter variables to drug use frequency. Results indicated that PTSD symptoms were associated …

Relationship Of Body Image To Breast And Skin Self-Examination Intentions And Behaviors, Sari R. Chait, Joel K. Thompson, Paul B. Jacobsen Jan 2009

Relationship Of Body Image To Breast And Skin Self-Examination Intentions And Behaviors, Sari R. Chait, Joel K. Thompson, Paul B. Jacobsen

Breast self-examinations (BSE) and skin self-examinations (SSE) represent cost-effective and time-efficient approaches to cancer detection. Given their utility, it is important to determine who is likely to perform these behaviors regularly and why. Because BSE and SSE require close examination of one's body, women who are less satisfied and less comfortable with their bodies may perform these behaviors less often. This study sought to determine if a relationship exists between body image and BSE and SSE behaviors and intentions. Ninety-three women completed measures assessing body image, past performance of and future intentions to perform BSE and SSE. Results indicated that …

The Interactive Effects Of Antisocial Personality Disorder And Court-Mandated Status On Substance Abuse Treatment Dropout, Stacey B. Daughters, Brooke A Stipelman, Marsha N. Sargeant, Randi Schuster, Marina Bornovalova, C W Lejuez Mar 2008

The Interactive Effects Of Antisocial Personality Disorder And Court-Mandated Status On Substance Abuse Treatment Dropout, Stacey B. Daughters, Brooke A Stipelman, Marsha N. Sargeant, Randi Schuster, Marina Bornovalova, C W Lejuez

The present study sought to examine the interactive effects of court-mandated (CM) treatment and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) on treatment dropout among 236 inner-city male substance users receiving residential substance abuse treatment. Of the 236 participants, 39.4% (n = 93) met criteria for ASPD and 72.5% (n = 171) were mandated to treatment through a pretrial release-to-treatment program. Results indicated a significant interaction between ASPD and CM status, such that patients with ASPD who were voluntarily receiving treatment were significantly more likely to drop out of treatment than each of the other groups. Subsequent discrete time survival analyses …

A League Of Their Own:Demographics, Motivations And Patterns Of Use Of 1,955 Male Adult Non-Medicalanabolic Steroid Users In The United States, Jason Cohen, Rick Collins, Jack Darkes, Daniel Gwartney Jan 2007

A League Of Their Own:Demographics, Motivations And Patterns Of Use Of 1,955 Male Adult Non-Medicalanabolic Steroid Users In The United States, Jason Cohen, Rick Collins, Jack Darkes, Daniel Gwartney

Background: Rule violations among elite-level sports competitors and tragedies among adolescents have largely defined the issue of non-medical anabolic-androgenic steroid (NMAAS) use for the public and policy makers. However, the predominant and oft-ignored segment of the NMAAS community exists in the general population that is neither participating in competitive sports nor adolescent. A clearer profile of NMAAS users within the general population is an initial step in developing a full understanding of NMAAS use and devising appropriate policy and interventions. This survey sought to provide a more comprehensive profile of NMAAS users by accessing a large sample of user respondents …

Cocaine During Adolescence Enhances Dopamine In Response To A Natural Reinforcer, Briony J. Catlow, Cheryl L. Kirstein Jan 2007

Cocaine During Adolescence Enhances Dopamine In Response To A Natural Reinforcer, Briony J. Catlow, Cheryl L. Kirstein

Psychology Faculty Publications

The use of cocaine during adolescent development could alter the normal growth of brain regions affected by cocaine, specifically the reward system, and impact the adult mesolimbic system. However, there is scant literature aimed at determining whether animals are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of drugs during adolescence. The present study investigated whether cocaine pretreatment in either adolescence or adulthood altered the dopaminergic response to a naturally reinforcing substance in adulthood. To evaluate the responsivity of the mesolimbic system after repeated cocaine, sucrose was offered during the dialysis procedure and dialysates were collected. Regardless of age all saline pretreated …
