This mixed methods action research study investigates the potential effects of student choice on motivation and academic performance in writing-based assignments in a fourth-grade classroom. Baseline data was collected prior to implementation of student choice writing activities and then used to compare writing samples collected post intervention. The baseline data suggests that students’ attitudes towards autonomy are positive. Having choices was important to them and helped them learn better. However, data also indicates that while students were motivated to write using choice, many of the reading and writing competency scores dropped during journal entry writing samples. This action research project investigated the implementation of movement breaks in a third-grade classroom to enhance academic performance and behavior. The short study aimed to assess whether integrating regular movement breaks into the classroom routine would lead to significant improvements in academic outcomes and behavior, particularly those students diagnosed with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Over a designated period, movement breaks were introduced at a specific interval during the school day. Data was collected through observations, surveys, and behavior tracking. This action research project used a mixed methods design to address the effect of different types of music on student focus while performing an independent task. Social Media Reliance And College Students' Tendency To Conform To Online Behaviors And Trends, Emily Grucello

The importance of social media is undeniable among college students who frequently turn to online platforms as a form of recreation. While researchers have analyzed the influence of social media on emotional factors, fewer researchers have investigated if reliance on social media has an impact on public behavior and conformity habits. Therefore, the current study assesses if user reliance on two common platforms, TikTok and Instagram, are associated with conformity levels. Data collection came from a sample of 124 college-aged participants. Results found a significant correlation between conformity and Instagram reliance (r = .31, p < .001), as well as conformity and TikTok reliance (r = .32, p < .001), such that higher levels of conformity was associated with higher reliance on Instagram and TikTok. These findings highlight the importance of understanding how consumption of social media has the potential to alter the decisions and behaviors of young adults.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social cognition and team cohesion in Division III collegiate athletes. Methods: A total of 103 athletes from SUNY Cortland participated. Two questionnaires were used: social cognition was assessed via the Tromsø Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS), and team cohesion was assessed via the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ). The two questionnaires, along with demographics, were completed online. Analysis: Pearson’s bivariate correlations were analyzed to assess the relationships among TSIS total score, GEQ total score, and GEQ social cohesion for the total sample and separately by sports season and sports type. This action research study was implemented over a three-week period in a first-grade classroom, collecting qualitative and quantitative data. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of Morning Meetings and Closing Circles on a sense of community in an elementary classroom. Preliminary findings show an increase in student social interactions, positive learning environment, and a climate of belonging. Service-learning is a pedagogical technique in which students apply course content to meet a community need. Students are also provided with an opportunity for reflection which results in an array of academic, psychological, and social benefits. This study will highlight the benefits students derive from participating in service-learning exercises in lower and upper division psychology courses. Empirical data suggest that service-learning activities benefit students in both lower and upper division psychology courses; however, students in upper division courses may obtain enhanced benefits. Assessing The Associations Between Friendship Length, Friendship Quality, And Comfort Level Discussing Sexual Health, Payton Charles

Sexual health communication has been linked to sexual health practices. Such research on communication typically studies parent-child relationships. Therefore, this study sought to test whether friendship length and friendship quality are correlated with comfort level talking about sex among same-gender and cross-gender friends. We surveyed 187 young-adults (Mage=20.10, SD=1.34; 49.2% female; 75% White). Results indicated that there is a significant positive relationship between quality of friendship and comfort level (r(184)=.39, p<.001). However, there wasn’t a significant relationship between length of friendship and comfort level (r(184)=.101, p=.169). When looking at the results in cross-gender friends, women showed a significant positive correlation between friendship quality and comfort level (r(19)=.512, p=.018), while men did not (r(19)=.150, p=.528). These results indicate that there may be a difference in comfort when discussing sexual health topics across genders.

Understanding Adolescent Friendships: An Analysis Of The Role Of Social Perspective-Taking In Friendship Dissolutions, Joseph W. Stewart

Friendships are critical relationships in adolescence, however, many friendships dissolve. One construct that may play a role in how adolescents experience such dissolutions is social perspective-taking (SPT). To test this hypothesis, 354 middle-schoolers (Mage=11.89, SD=0.86; 53% female; 82% white) completed a self-report, online survey regarding a dissolution experience. Results from an independent samples t-test revealed that females (M=2.45, SD=0.70) displayed higher SPT than males (M=2.09, SD=0.73), t(270)=-4.13, p<0.001. A correlational analysis confirmed our hypothesis that adolescents who showed greater SPT would report higher quality friendships, r(271)=0.593, p<0.001. Contrary to our hypothesis, adolescents who displayed higher SPT were more likely to react with anger (r(257)=0.16, p<0.001), sadness (r(252)=0.31, p=0.01), loneliness (r(253)=0.28, p<0.001), and rumination (r(252)=0.23, p<0.001), and less likely to feel happy (r(259)=-0.29, p<0.001) and relieved (r(255)=-0.26, p<0.001) following a dissolution. These results aid in the understanding of social perspective-taking and its meaning in adolescent relationships and social development.

Researchers have long studied the connection between sexual health practices and sexual health communication. While current research has examined communication between same-gender friends, it is lacking between cross-gender friends. To test whether differences exist between same-gender and cross-gender friends in their frequency of communication and comfort discussing sexual health, 187 college-aged participants (Mage=20.10, SD=1.34; 49.2% female; 75% White) self-reported their experiences using a Qualtrics survey. Results from independent samples t-tests revealed that same-gender friends reported more frequent discussion of both non-sex-related issues (M=2.53, SD=.51) and sex-related issues (M=1.20, SD=.73) than cross-gender friends (M=2.30, SD=.50; M=.95, SD=.70 respectively), tnonsex(185)=-2.54, p=.012; tsex(185)=-1.98, …

STI rates are on the rise, especially among college-aged adults. Historically, there has been little research concerning LGBTQ+ couples and their communication and education regarding sexual health. To better understand this perspective, the current study utilized both self-report and observational data from five non-heterosexual couples (N=10; Mage=21.90 years, SD=2.92; 60% female; 100% White). Results showed that, on average, participants talked about sexual health related topics for 9.335 out of ten possible minutes. Afterwards, participants reported feeling comfortable discussing these topics (M=5.48, SD=0.73 on a scale from 1-6). A common theme that emerged was the lack of sexual health education for …

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that individuals perform resistance training exercises at a specific intensity based on external load (percentage of one repetition maximum; %1RM). However, only 29.6% of adults in 2013 reported strength training two or more times per week. Furthermore, individuals lifting at recommended percentages vary in their pleasure and displeasure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of imagery use among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III collegiate athletes. There have been numerous studies examining the association between physical activity, motivation and quality of life. In contrast, studies focusing on aerobic fitness and its relationship with levels of motivation and perceived quality of life are lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between a direct measure of aerobic fitness, behavioral regulations, and perceptions of quality of life in college-aged sample.
