The Correlation Between Specific Curiosity And Intelligence In Adults, Charles R. Schwenk Jul 1974

The Correlation Between Specific Curiosity And Intelligence In Adults, Charles R. Schwenk

Dissertations and Theses

Previous studies done on the correlation between specific curiosity and intelligence have been inconclusive. In the present study, a test of state specific curiosity and a test of intelligence were administered to 76 Ss from two introductory psychology courses. Three hypotheses were tested. These were, (a) that a significant specific curiosity-intelligence correlation would exist, (b) that the specific curiosity-verbal subscale correlation would be higher than the specific curiosity-abstraction sub-scale correlation, and (c) that there would be a sex difference in the specific curiosity-intelligence correlations. The data did not support hypothesis (a) or (b). However, they did support hypothesis (c). …

Effects Of Complexity, Incongruity And Content On Cartoon Humor Appreciation., Robert Goodkind Jul 1974

Effects Of Complexity, Incongruity And Content On Cartoon Humor Appreciation., Robert Goodkind

Psychology ETDs

Jerry M. Suls proposed an information processing model for the understanding of cartoon humor. The model describes two processes involved in humor appreciation: recognizing the incongruity (the "incongruity" variable), and finding a logical explanation or solution to the incongruity (the "complexity" variable). Suls states that there are no other operative variables in cartoon humor appreciation besides these two. The implication of this is that cartoon content should have no effect on humor c1ppreciation when incongruity arid complexity are controlled. The present study was a test of Suls' model. Cartoons previously rated for incongruity, complexity, hostile content and sexual content were …

A Variation Of Sternberg's Paradigm, Robert J. Smillie Jul 1974

A Variation Of Sternberg's Paradigm, Robert J. Smillie

Student Work

An investigation was carried out to test Sternberg’s stage theory using his additive-factor method. Three factors were proposed that would have additive effects on RT and two factors that would not. Ss were presented stimuli in the form of colors and sound frequencies under varying combinations of mode, stimulus quality, list length, and response type. Ss were also blocked according to sex. Results revealed only stimulus quality and list length to be additive. Response type interacted with list length. Males were faster than females but the sex factor was differentially influencing two of the proposed stages in Sternberg’s model. The …

Effects Of Evaluation On Creative Production, Dalia E. Katilius-Braun Jul 1974

Effects Of Evaluation On Creative Production, Dalia E. Katilius-Braun

Student Work

Despite considerable interest in the problem of creativity, both in psychology and in other fields, there is still no standard definition of the term. Guilford (1 9 6 7 ) defines creativity by making a distinction between convergent thinking and divergent thinking. In convergent thinking, according to Guilford, there is a single right answer or best answer to a problem, while in divergent thinking there is not. He uses the term divergent thinking interchangeably with creativity. Ilis research indicates that of the factors identified as making up divergent thinking, ideational fluency, which Guilford defines as fairly rapid generation of units …

The Effect Of Special Class Placement And Remediation On The Self-Concept Of The Learning Disabled Child, Marianne Seibert Jul 1974

The Effect Of Special Class Placement And Remediation On The Self-Concept Of The Learning Disabled Child, Marianne Seibert

Master's Theses

Results of this study do seem to indicate that learning disabled children enrolled in a heterogeneously grouped classroom develop appraisals of self in academic areas separate from a more general, overall perception of self. If this is the case, estimates of a global self-concept may cloud important differences in the individual components of self-concept.

Age And Sex Differences, Meaningfulness And Formal Similarity In A Verbal Discrimination Task, Aleen Burke Dempster Jun 1974

Age And Sex Differences, Meaningfulness And Formal Similarity In A Verbal Discrimination Task, Aleen Burke Dempster

Master's Theses

The present investigation is concerned with learning in the aged. The task is a verbal discrimination one, in which the dimensions of meaningfulness and formal intrapair similarity are examined. The study is ontogenetic in the limited sense that the older sample, over 60 years of age, is compared to a sample of college age youth.

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Activities Of Captive Black Bear (Ursus Americanus)--Locomotion And Breeding, Jeanne Crozer Ludlow Jun 1974

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Activities Of Captive Black Bear (Ursus Americanus)--Locomotion And Breeding, Jeanne Crozer Ludlow

Masters Theses

The behavior of the American black bear, Ursus americanus, has been poorly documented in the past. This investigation is a preliminary analysis of the diurnal activities of a hand-reared female and a captive wild male black bear, and the successful breeding of another pair of captive black bears.

Two black bears were kept in a semi-naturalistic enclosure at Tremont within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GSMNP). Their daily activities were recorded by a scan sampling technique, supplemented by photographic accounts. Detailed systemic records were kept of behaviors classified into categories (locomotor, non-locomotor). The bears' activities were analyzed in …

Temporal Compounds And Attention Theory, Bob Kosiba May 1974

Temporal Compounds And Attention Theory, Bob Kosiba

Psychology ETDs

The major purpose of this experiment was to extend the experimental analysis of temporal compounds to differential operant conditioning, and to study a variety of tasks differing in their difficulty due to the presence of various components and the assignment of reinforcement contingencies. After initial bar-press training in a Skinner Box equipped with a response bar, food delivery cup, and the mechanics to present sound and light stimulation, 48 female albino rats were randomly assigned to 6 groups for discrimination training. All groups were counterbalanced for the assignment of reinforcement to the stimulus configurations. Single stimulus presentation consisted of 1/2 …

The Impact Of College Speech Classes On Listening Skills Of Students., Candice Piazza May 1974

The Impact Of College Speech Classes On Listening Skills Of Students., Candice Piazza

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of college speech classes upon developing improved listening skills. More specifically it sought to determine the extent to which the students who took Speech 100 or 111 have acquired listening skills.

There has been considerable theorizing concerning listening and auding [sic] with only a scattering of experimentation. According to existing data, listening would appear to be a complex human behavior that is only partially understood. There are, however definite listener functions, listening conditions and variables that affect listening. Aspects of attention are also important when considering the occurrence on unoccurrence …

Absolute And Relative Bidirectional Transfer In Verbal Conflict Resolution Tasks, John Milam Brame May 1974

Absolute And Relative Bidirectional Transfer In Verbal Conflict Resolution Tasks, John Milam Brame

Master's Theses

Prior exposure to difficult motor conflicts has been shown to impede later performance in resolving easier conflicts. To determine if similar negative transfer occurred with verbal conflicts, 80 undergraduates resolved conflicts formed by pairig seven personal characteristic adjectives. Additional transfer effects associated with moving from easier to more difficult conflicts were also examied. Using a conflict resolution board, one group of Ss resolved 10 double approach-avoidance (DAP-AV} conflicts followed by 10 approach-approach (AP-AP} conflicts, and another group transferred from AP-AP to DAP-AV. Two additional groups, which resolved 20 conflicts of the same type (AP-AP or DAP-AV), were used in assessing …

Experimenter-Supplied Versus Subject-Originated Descriptive Sentence And Mediation Mnemonics In A Modified Paied-Associate Learning Task, Jospeh Albert Garten May 1974

Experimenter-Supplied Versus Subject-Originated Descriptive Sentence And Mediation Mnemonics In A Modified Paied-Associate Learning Task, Jospeh Albert Garten

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present experiment was to compare the effectiveness of E-supplied and S-originated descriptive sentence and mediation mnemonics to a simple repetition con- dition in a modified paired-associate learning task. The S-originated devices were significantly superior to the E supplied aids at the 2-day and 1-week retention intervals. All mnemonic conditions produced significantly higher retention than the mediation E-supplied and SR conditions at the 8-week level.

There were no differences in recall between the two S-originated or between the-E-supplied conditions at the 2-day and 1-week intervals. It was concluded that the source of the mnemonic was the crucial …

The Effect Of Public Commitment On Attitudes In Consonant And Dissonant Situations, Mark Joseph Slichter May 1974

The Effect Of Public Commitment On Attitudes In Consonant And Dissonant Situations, Mark Joseph Slichter

Master's Theses

A primary objective of the study was to treat commitment as a discrete independent.variable, avoiding the confusion resulting from inferential and partially confounded designs employed in most previous commitment studies, and this objective was achieved. Separation of commitment as a distinct variable allows specific inferences to be made about its function in the attitude change process.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Growth Group And A Behavior Change Group On The Inner-Directedness Of College Students, Larry R. Mccullough May 1974

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Growth Group And A Behavior Change Group On The Inner-Directedness Of College Students, Larry R. Mccullough

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The primary purpose of this study was to compare the relative effectiveness of two group counseling methods, a self-directed behavior change group and an experiential growth group, for increasing inner-directedness as measured by Shostrom's Personal Orientation Inventory, in college students who were differentiated, on the basis of a pre-treatment measure of inner-directedness, into internals and externals. A second goal was to compare the overall outcome of each method with a no-treatment control group.

Pretest-posttest gain scores on the "I" scale of the Personal Orientation Inventory were obtained for a sample of 72 college students. The data collected were used to …
