How Adaptive And Maladaptive Perfectionism Relate To Positive And Negative Psychological Functioning: Testing A Stress-Mediation Model In Black And White Female College Students, Edward C. Chang, Kira Hudson Banks, Angela F. Watkins
How Adaptive And Maladaptive Perfectionism Relate To Positive And Negative Psychological Functioning: Testing A Stress-Mediation Model In Black And White Female College Students, Edward C. Chang, Kira Hudson Banks, Angela F. Watkins
Kira Hudson Banks, Ph.D.
This study assessed racial variations in how adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism relate to psychological functioning in a sample of 150 Black and 150 White female college students. Comparative results indicated that Black women, as compared with White women, reported less adaptive perfectionism, less life satisfaction, greater stress, and greater negative affect. Correlational results indicated that for both groups, maladaptive perfectionism, but not adaptive perfectionism, was associated with stress. Accordingly, a model in which stress mediates the link between maladaptive perfectionism and psychological functioning was tested. Overall, path-analytic results indicated that stress completely or partially mediated the link between maladaptive perfectionism …

Evaluation Of An Anger Therapy Intervention For Incarcerated Adult Males, Steven D. Vannoy, William T. Hoyt
Evaluation Of An Anger Therapy Intervention For Incarcerated Adult Males, Steven D. Vannoy, William T. Hoyt
Steven D Vannoy
ABSTRACT An anger therapy intervention was developed for incarcerated adult males. The therapy was an extension of cognitive-behavioral approaches, incorporating principles and practices drawn from Buddhist psychology. Adult males from a Midwestern low-security prison were randomly assigned to ei- ther a treatment group (n = 16) or a waiting list control group (n = 15). Following a 10-session intervention, treated participants exhibited significant reduction in anger relative to those in the control group. Greater reductions in anger for the therapy group was mediated (p = .07), by greater reduction in egotism relative to the control group. Contrary to predictions, anger …
Judgments Of Exocentric Direction In Large-Scale Space, Jonathan W. Kelly, Jack M. Loomis, Andrew C. Beall
Judgments Of Exocentric Direction In Large-Scale Space, Jonathan W. Kelly, Jack M. Loomis, Andrew C. Beall
Jonathan W. Kelly
Judgments of exocentric direction are quite common, especially when judging where others are looking or pointing. To investigate these judgments in large-scale space, observers were shown two targets in a large open field and were asked to judge the exocentric direction specified by the targets. The targets ranged in egocentric distance from 5 to 20 m with target-to-target angular separations of 45 8 ,90 8 , and 135 8 . Observers judged exocentric direction using two methods: (i) by judging which point on a distant fence appeared collinear with the two targets, and (ii) by orienting their body in a …

A Lego Model Of The Modularity Of The Mind, Steven J. Scher
A Lego Model Of The Modularity Of The Mind, Steven J. Scher
Steven J. Scher
In this paper I propose that the dominant form of evolutionary psychology (which I term “cognitive adaptationism”) can be improved by adopting an alternative version of the concept of mental modularity. I suggest a metaphor of mental modules as Lego blocks. The Lego blocks represent a relatively small set of elementary operations that the mind/brain can carry out. These Lego blocks are repeatedly assembled in different ways to execute a wide variety of different functions. These repeated assemblies correspond more closely to the things that cognitive adaptationists have asserted are modules. Arguments in favor of the Lego model include the …

Phineas Paist And The Architecture Of Coral Gables, Florida, Nicholas Patricios
Phineas Paist And The Architecture Of Coral Gables, Florida, Nicholas Patricios
Nicholas Patricios
Coral Gables in South Florida is lauded as one of America's finest early 20th century planned developments. It was the vision of George Merrick, the city's founder and master builder, to create a completely planned development. The architect Phineas Paist (1875-1937) played a major role in realizing Merrick's dream for Coral Gables as "colorist," "supervisor," and "designer." To better understand Paist’s ideas, his architecture, and his contribution to the architecture of Coral Gables it is necessary to examine his education and experiences during his formative years prior to his arrival in Coral Gables.

The Ethical Dilemmas Of Communicating A University's Job Placement Rate: Legal Obligation Or Moral Responsibility, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Karen Hagans
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
The purpose of this research is to investigate one area of ethical concern in higher education, specifically the reporting of job placement rates. The research discovered such dramatic variations in the way job placement rates were calculated and reported that job placement data become suspect. The ethical concerns of reporting job placement data are discussed in relationship to institutional policies and practices and student expectations

Fall Prevention Programs For The Elderly: A Bayesian Secondary Meta-Analysis, Joseph F. Lucke
Fall Prevention Programs For The Elderly: A Bayesian Secondary Meta-Analysis, Joseph F. Lucke
Joseph Lucke
A secondary meta-analysis of programs to reduce falls in the elderly is undertaken to demonstrate a Bayesian analysis. The Bayesian statistical tradition is carefully distinguished from the standard Neyman-Pearson-Wald (NPW) statistical tradition. In the 12 studies, the logit effect size is used to compare treatment groups using a prevention program to control groups without a program. To contrast the Bayesian analysis, independent-effects and fixed-effect meta-analyses are first conducted in the NPW tradition. This is followed by Bayesian independent-effects and fixed-effect meta-analyses that numerically replicate the NPW results but have conceptually different interpretations. The final analyses comprise Bayesian random-effects and predictive …
