The Coevolution Of Networks And Political Attitudes, David Lazer, Brian Rubineau, Carol Chetkovich, Nancy Katz, Michael Neblo

David Lazer

How do attitudes and social affiliations co-evolve? A long stream of research has focused on the relationship between attitudes and social affiliations. However, in most of this research the causal relationship between views and affiliations is difficult to discern definitively: Do people influence each other’s views so that they converge over time or do they primarily affiliate (by choice or happenstance) with those of similar views? Here we use longitudinal attitudinal and whole network data collected at critical times (notably, at the inception of the system) to identify robustly the determinants of attitudes and affiliations. We find significant conformity tendencies: …

Democracy In Dangerous Places: Colombia. Vote With Paramilitary Preferences, Fernando Estrada Mar 2010

Democracy In Dangerous Places: Colombia. Vote With Paramilitary Preferences, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

This paper discusses the problem of paramilitary violence in Colombia and its effects on democracy. The elections were part of the purpose of self defense and constituted a disguised form to retain its drug trafficking economy. The impacts on institutional technology have been negative: representative democracy, the electoral system and voting, they were not the same. With paramilitary violence changed the electoral map in areas contested by the traditional political parties. Voting with paramilitary preferences mean the biggest challenge is constitutional democracy in Colombia.

Facts And Nature Of Scientific Discovery. Ludwick Fleck And Thomas Kuhn, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

Studies of L. Fleck, T. S. Kuhn, N. R. Hanson on the nature of scientific development and thus of a scientific fact, despite their differences, has raised new questions in fields as diverse as the history of science, sociology of science and philosophy of scientific language. At the same time, have pointed unfounded assumptions underlying the current ideas about what are 'facts', and have suggested alternative ways to focus the epistemology of scientific knowledge. Let us identify some detail the implications that flow from our study in this chapter for the proposed research as hypotheses

Fernando Estrada

This article is aimed at viewing the evidence in the legal and political debate. A relatively little attention in the literature expert. Relying on the philosophy of science and a little less in legal theory, we note that the explanations under inductive legal and political knowledge, and the arguments about evidence and proof, connections are based on probabilistic and assumptions rebuttable and not on speculations embodied theoretical goal. The support base to represent the legal debate - now has strong political component of formal logic and empirical research.

Marx E Seu Legado Para A Teoria Contemporânea Do Estado Capitalista, Renato Perissinotto, Adriano Codato Jan 2010

Marx E Seu Legado Para A Teoria Contemporânea Do Estado Capitalista, Renato Perissinotto, Adriano Codato

Adriano Codato

The purpose of this essay is to identify some ideas outlined by Marx in his 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonparte that became fundamental for the development and establisment of the marxist theory of the State between the years 1960-1980. Although the importance of this work for the improvement of marxist theory of the state has been largely recognized by many authors, there are no, if we are not mistaken, studies dedicated to sistematically identifying the thematical links between Marx's analysis and the the works of social scientists and economists published during the second decade of the last century whose intention …

Ler Marx, Hoje: Um Programa De Pesquisa E De Interpretação, Adriano Codato, Renato Perissinotto

Adriano Codato

This study presents a project of reading and interpretation of Marx s texts about the French politics. The greater purpose that inspires this project is the desire to make Marx s thoughts a normal social science in two very precise ways: as a type of scientific knowledge, rather than a normative theory and/or social view of the world; and as an interpretative genre, which consists on connecting the actions and political institutions to their social dimension. This posture necessarily implies a comprehension different from the works of Marx that are more interested in his analytical operations than in the monumental …

Marxism And Elitism: Two Opposite Social Analysis Models?, Adriano Codato, Renato Perissinotto Jan 2010

Marxism And Elitism: Two Opposite Social Analysis Models?, Adriano Codato, Renato Perissinotto

Adriano Codato

The purpose of this article is to contrapose the propositions on power, class and political domination presented by a particular interpretation of Marxism - structuralist Marxism - through a critical dialogue with one of its most paradigmatic authors: Nicos Poulantzas. The article states, against Poulantzas suggestions, that the insertion of the concept of "élite" in theoretical Marxism may produce positive effects on it, specially making the classist analysis of politics scientifically manageable.

Concept Formation In Political Science, Andreas Schedler Jan 2010

Concept Formation In Political Science, Andreas Schedler

Andreas Schedler

Concepts are central to the enterprise of political science. The concepts we use shape the world we see. Without solid conceptual foundations, the edifice of political science is insecure. If we fail to develop clear and precise concepts, our theoretical insights and empirical discoveries will fail to be clear and precise, too. This entry reviews major pitfalls for conceptual analysis as well as the fundamental challenges to concept formation and conceptual innovation in the study of politics.

Recent Changes In The Armed Conflict In Colombia, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

Analyst in the strategy and operations of guerrillas and paramilitaries, have suggested that the Colombian conflict analysis should show the differences between clusters paramilitary. Not only because after the 80s, drug trafficking has played a decisive role, but because the geography of territories and control combinations have not been studied sufficiently. Geography of armed conflict should also provide tools to understand the impact of war on natural resources, for example. We sustain that while the drug economy has filtered the structure of semi-groups, promoting market competition and private security protection, drug trafficking does not explain absolutely all sources of violence …

The war in Colombia presents, among other characteristics, a high content of oratorical and rhetoric; the different armed actors are disputed, besides territories, the power of the public opinion, with what each violent action is usually accompanied by a discursive or symbolic justification. The present rehearsal offers an analysis of the paramilitary speech, starting from the declarations and interviews to Carlos Castaño, main boss of the selfdefenses.
