Assassination And The Death Of Politics, Steven Alan Samson Dec 1995

Assassination And The Death Of Politics, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The assassination of Israeli's prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, moments after speaking of his hopes for peace at a large public rally in Tel Aviv gives his death the added poignancy of the image of an old soldier giving up his life in the pursuit of peace. But the assassin's bullets were also aimed at the heart of an entire nation.

It may indeed be true, as Simone Weil observed, that the destruction of a city is the greatest calamity that can befall the human race. The scope of the horrors that have accompanied twentieth century warfare and ethnic strife is …

Ideological Congruence In The Chinese Countryside : Village Leaders And Their Electorates And Selectorates, Melanie Manion

CAPS Working Paper Series

Recent changes in economic and political organization in the Chinese countryside are producing a new basis for inquiry into congruence between village leaders and those who choose them—namely, their electorates of ordinary villagers and selectorates of leaders at the higher township level. This paper draws on 1990 survey data to analyze the connection between village leaders and their electorates and selectorates, in terms of congruence of positions along an economic ideology dimension measuring orientations to the importance of state management relative to private individual initiative in economic development. Results of multivariate regression analyses of congruence in terms of responsiveness, proximity, …

The Search For Predictability: A City Manager's Perspective On Intergovernmental Relations, Thomas Stevens Jan 1995

The Search For Predictability: A City Manager's Perspective On Intergovernmental Relations, Thomas Stevens

Maine Policy Review

Thomas Stevens’ perspective on intergovernmental relations has been shaped particularly by his experience as town manager in Limestone, Maineas he watched the federal government attempt to close Loring Air Force Base on numerous occasions. The closing of Loring was an especially traumatic experience for central Aroostook County. Not surprisingly, the nature of intergovernmental relations and the economic future of the region are high on Tom Stevens' list of concerns. In a recent interview with Maine Policy Review, he argued for a new partnership among the three levels of government that would be characterized by stability and predictability.

The Tofflerian Paradox, Robert J. Bunker Jan 1995

The Tofflerian Paradox, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Given the issue's importance—the Army's future as an effective 21st-century warfighting institution—Tofflerian theory attributes that are conceptually flawed should be forcefully acknowledged. With this perspective in mind, I posit that the war forms developed in War and Anti-War, specifically First and Second Wave war, are overgeneralized and distort Western warfare's historical development. As such, the war forms do not significantly further RMA theory and potentially pose a great liability. Still, these terms are becoming accepted by Army scholars because of the Tofflers' great theoretical influence.

It is based on an assessment of work underway in some regions, and extensive discussion with regional groups throughout the continent.

Feminist Resistance In Serbia, Donna M. Hughes Dr., Lepa Mladjenovic, Zorica Mrsevic Dec 1994

Feminist Resistance In Serbia, Donna M. Hughes Dr., Lepa Mladjenovic, Zorica Mrsevic

Donna M. Hughes

In the last four years the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has broken apart. Driven by nationalism, the wars in Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia have killed an estimated 300,000 people, wounded another 1,500,00 and forced 4,500,000 people to become refugees. While the world see daily reports of Serbian aggression and nationalist extremism, feminists in Serbia have been protesting all acts of aggression, included that advocated by their own government and supporting the victims of violence.
