Results Of A Delphi Study On Transport Research Needs, Marcus Ramsay Wigan

Marcus R Wigan

A Delphi survey was undertaken with a selection of professionals in academic, government and consulting across the world. The objective was to identify the application areas where priorities should be placed, and the current status of the research and information tools needed to address them. For this reason both modelling and application experts were included. The shifts in priorities over the last five years, and the differences in view between the three sectors are presented. The attitudes towards a range of specific research and development directions were also assessed. Later republished in the Journal of Transport Statistics, but without this, …

The Man Who Skied Down Everest, Steven Alan Samson May 1995

The Man Who Skied Down Everest, Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

The skier Miura challenges the inhospitable mountains in a pilgrimage of self-discovery. The ultimate challenge is what brings personality and spirit into the contest, where the artful words are peeled away so that a man may know the instant of exposure called insight. However imperfect the means or the results, we demand this confrontation with our selves.

When Is Cumulative Voting Preferable To Single-Member Districting?, Michael E Lewyn Apr 1995

When Is Cumulative Voting Preferable To Single-Member Districting?, Michael E Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

Cumulative voting is most appropriate in small towns, nonpartisan elections, and jurisdictions in which voters know whether they are in the majority. By contrast, single-member districts are preferable to cumulative voting in big cities, state or federal elections, partisan elections, and elections in which the racial or partisan balance between factions is either close or is unknown to most voters.

A Burguesia Contra O Estado? Crise Política, Ação De Classe E Os Rumos Da Transição, Adriano Codato

Adriano Codato

This article discusses the bourgeoisie struggles against "nationalization" (1975-1976), and for "democracy" (1977-1978) and their relation to the transformations of the state system in Brazil after 1974. My objective here is to determine in what way certain organizational formats promoted by the Geisel government (1974-1979) significantly altered the current system of representation of "private" interests, based on corporatism, and its relation to the political conflicts from the "distension" period and the "political opening".

In Defence Of Exploitation, Justin Schwartz Jan 1995

In Defence Of Exploitation, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

The concept of exploitation is thought to be central to Marx's Critique of capitalism. John Roemer, an analytical (then-) Marxist economist now at Yale, attacked this idea in a series of papers and books in the 1970s-1990s, arguing that Marxists should be concerned with inequality rather than exploitation -- with distribution rather than production, precisely the opposite of what Marx urged in The Critique of the Gotha Progam.

This paper expounds and criticizes Roemer's objections and his alternative inequality based theory of exploitation, while accepting some of his criticisms. It may be viewed as a companion paper to my What's …

Philosophy, Rationality And Argumentation (Libro: Filosofía, Racionalidad Y Argumentación) Spanish, Fernando Estrada

My interest is to understand the problems with some careful handling of the issues, I believe, relevant. Aristotle, Sophocles, Descartes, Hobbes, Kant, Foucault, Popper and other thinkers, are analyzed in their own texts, or in other cases of individual straight to interpret the problems they posed. It is "the freedom the individual, "" democracy "," body "," man, "language" "Ethics," "rationality," "the argumentacin" etc.. For the reader is book support, a resource for which he is challenged to read reseados texts, a letter with ways to analyze in different directions to locate each one that cause you most concern

Social Justice And Political Change: Public Opinion In Capitalist And Post-Communist States, David Mason, James Kluegel, Bernd Wegener

David S. Mason

Until recent times, analysis and debate about economic and political justice did not involve research on the views of the common person. Scholars often made assumptions about what common people think is fair, but for the most part they confined their thinking to a single country and argued on rational or moral grounds, with little supporting empirical data. The present volume, involving the collaboration of 30 social scientists in 12 countries, represents the most broad-ranging comparative research to date. The book is the first to grow out of the work of the International Social Justice Project (ISJP), a collaborative study …
