Challenges And Strategies Of Mobile Advertising In India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
Advertising is paid communication through a medium in which the sponsor is identified and the message is controlled. Every major medium is used to deliver these messages, including: television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, the Internet and today’s growing mobile advertising. Advertisements can also be seen on the seats of grocery carts, on the walls of an airport walkway, on the sides of buses, heard in telephone hold messages and instore PA systems but get paid for reading SMS on our mobile phones .It is the new way of marketing strategy for reaching subscribers. Mobile advertising is the business of encouraging …

The Indian television system is one of the most extensive systems in the world. Terrestrial broadcasting, which has been the sole preserve of the government, provides television coverage to over 90% of India's 900 million people. By the end of 1996 nearly 50 million households had television sets. International satellite broadcasting, introduced in 1991, has swept across the country because of the rapid proliferation of small scale cable systems. By the end of 1996, Indians could view dozens of foreign and local channels and the competition for audiences and advertising revenues was one of the hottest in the world. In …

Based on the 2007 MLA report’s call for more integrative approaches to L2 language/literature courses, we present the curricula of two theme-based French bridge courses. These courses simultaneously develop students' advanced language proficiency and explore literary, cultural, and sociolinguistic themes through an analysis of various textual genres and linguistic registers.

The Lost 'C': The Communities Goal Area (Plenary Panel Presentation), Heather W. Allen

Does a study abroad experience facilitate the Communities goal? I argue that: 1) although study abroad may serve as a potential step in helping students come to realize the inherent advantages of communicating in more than one language, this cannot be automatically assumed; 2) we need to critically examine our own pedagogies, both before and during study abroad, and how classroom learning equips students to navigate the linguistic and cultural demands of life in target language communities.

Community Radio:History,Growth,Challenges And Current Status Of It With Special Reference To India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
Community radio is a type of radio service that caters to the interests of a certain area, broadcasting content that is popular to a local audience but which may often be overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters. Modern-day community radio stations often serve their listeners by offering a variety of content that is not necessarily provided by the larger commercial radio stations. Community radio outlets may carry news and information programming geared toward the local area, particularly immigrant or minority groups that are poorly served by other major media outlets. Philosophically two distinct approaches to community radio can be discerned, …

History Of Communication And Its Application In Multicultaral,Multilingual Social System In India Across Ages, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
The history of communication dates back to the earliest signs of cavemen.Communication can range from very subtle processes of exchange, to full conversations and mass communication. Human communication was revolutionized with speech perhaps 200,000 years ago, Symbols were developed about 30,000 years ago and writing about 7,000. On a much shorter scale, there have been major developments in the field of telecommunication in the past few centuries.

Exploring The Boundaries: Attitudinal Autonomy In Healthcare Interpreting, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano

Patients who visit hospitals on the southern coast of Spain range from social immigrants such as tourists and EU expatriate residents to economic immigrants from less developed countries. Both groups have in common their lack of ability to communicate in Spanish. However, while for the first group qualified interpreters are easily accessed, for the second there is a lack of them. As a result, healthcare interpreters must deal with many different agents and an ever-changing social context as regards the power relations that are constantly emerging between doctors and patients. This divergence affects the way interpreters are perceived by healthcare …

Investigating Language Learning And Motivation Beyond The Classroom: Challenges Of Conducting Research From A Sociocultural Theory Perspective, Heather W. Allen, Tae-Young Kim
Heather Willis Allen
This session focuses on three challenges to researching language learning and motivation beyond the classroom from a sociocultural theory perspective--conceptual, methodological, and critical/ethical. Discussion is complemented with examples from two qualitative studies--one of U.S. study abroad participants in France and another of Korean students in an ESL program in Canada.

Response To Tesol's Position Statement On The Linguistic Rights Of Deaf Students, Sarah Compton
Sarah Compton
This piece responds to TESOL's position statement on the linguistic rights of deaf students to develop proficiency in both native signed and spoken languages. The statement lays a foundation upon which both English language teaching professionals and deaf education practitioners can build a partnership to advocate for deaf students’ linguistic rights and promote multilingual education programs for deaf students and all learners of English.
Discourse Contexts And Article Use Among Malaysian School Students, Arshad Abd Samad
Discourse Contexts And Article Use Among Malaysian School Students, Arshad Abd Samad
Arshad Abd Samad
Several studies have examined the interconnection between discourse contexts and structural form. Chaudron and Parker (1990), for example, investigated the structural form used to encode the referent subject Noun Phrase in new, known, and current discourse contexts. These three contexts relate to when a new referent is used as the topic of a discourse, when a known referent is used as the topic and when there is continued reference to the topic after it has been established in the discourse. Mellow and Fuller (1995) also used the same three discourse contexts to examine article use for specific referent nouns. Investigating …

Teaching Grammar And What Students Errors In The Use Of The English Auxiliary "Be" Can Tell Us, Arshad Abd Samad, Hawanum Hussein
Arshad Abd Samad
In teaching grammar, teachers often are faced with the dilemma of either emphasising the formal properties of the language or its meaning aspect. One of the more popular language teaching approaches of the last three decades has been the communicative approach. This approach has had a signifi cant impact on the teaching of grammar as its objective of communicative competence has led to a diminished role for grammar teaching. However, of late, numerous voices have advocated a more prominent role for grammar in achieving this objective. The question of whether to emphasise form or meaning remains central. Several theorists have …
Rethinking Graduate Student Teacher Training In Light The Mla Report, Kate Paesani
Rethinking Graduate Student Teacher Training In Light The Mla Report, Kate Paesani
Kate Paesani
The 2007 MLA report recommends eliminating the bifurcation of FL departments because it impedes departmental coherence. Yet, the report does not address how to train graduate students to implement its recommendations. This paper considers graduate student teacher training in light of the report, identifies key issues and suggests possible solutions.

Reductionism, Activity Theory, And L2 Motivation Research: Toward New Concepts And Definitions, Tae-Young Kim Dr.
Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)
This paper focuses on the theoretical foundation of second language (L2) learning motivation from a Vygotskian Activity Theory (AT) perspective. In general, previous L2 motivation research adopted either psychometric or sociological approaches, which have not fully considered the mediational process between individual learners and their meaningful environments. Since L2 motivation reflects learners’ histories and sociocultural contexts, it is crucial to approach this from an AT perspective. After critiquing current L2 motivation research using Valsiner and van der Veer’s (2000) argument of downward/upward reductionism, I introduce the notion of L2 motivation as social mediation and discuss the applicability of AT to …

Interactive Contact As Linguistic Affordance During Short-Term Study Abroad: Myth Or Reality?, Heather W. Allen
Heather Willis Allen
This study took a sociocultural theory perspective and investigated interactive contact with French by 18 participants in a short-term study abroad (SA) program and the degree to which interactions with homestay families, U.S. peers, and other French speakers in the local community were perceived as valuable affordances for language learning. Findings demonstrate that whereas contact in French with host families was viewed as a valuable affordance for cultural and / or linguistic learning, participants' interactions in the local community were infrequent and viewed less positively. Peer-to-peer interaction in French was construed by some students as useful for developing confidence with …
Exploring The Feasibility Of A Pedagogy Of Multiliteracies In Introductory Foreign Language Courses, Heather W. Allen, Kate Paesani
Exploring The Feasibility Of A Pedagogy Of Multiliteracies In Introductory Foreign Language Courses, Heather W. Allen, Kate Paesani
Heather Willis Allen
The 2007 MLA Report calls for large-scale reform in university foreign language (FL) departments to integrate the study of language, literature, and culture and move beyond the the language-content dichotomy that has characterized the undergraduate curriculum for decades. This article explores the implications of these recommendations for introductory FL courses, arguing in favor of a pedagogy of multiliteracies (New London Group, 1996; Kern, 2000) as one pathway toward curricular reform. The adoption of a multiliteracies framework in response to calls for curricular change is not entirely novel, yet most scholarship to date has focused on the need for more explicit …

Language-Learning Motivation During Short-Term Study Abroad: An Activity Theory Perspective, Heather W. Allen
Heather Willis Allen
This study investigated the development of language-learning motivation during short-term study abroad for six intermediate-level students of French. Taking an activity theory perspective, findings demonstrated that one of two orientations motivated participants to learn or continue learning French at the college level: linguistic motives or career-oriented motives. The choice to study abroad was seen as either a critical step to achieving fluency or a means of travel and cultural learning. Enhanced language-learning motivation emerged, to varying degrees, for participants with linguistically oriented motives for learning French who viewed study abroad as a language-learning experience but not for participants with primarily …
