Over the past decade, literacy-oriented instruction has emerged as a potential solution to the language-literature divide that has plagued foreign language programs, and a body of research regarding literacy-based practices and text-based curricular reform now exists (e.g., Allen, 2009; Byrnes & Sprang, 2004; Kern, 2000; Swaffar & Arens, 2005). Within this line of research, literacy is conceived of more broadly than reading and writing; literacy entails the complex and contextually sensitive relationships among readers, writers, texts, culture, and language (Kern & Schultz, 2005). Developing Foreign Language Literacy Through Literature, Kate Paesani

This talk explores the role of literature in the foreign language curriculum and its contribution to students’ foreign language literacy by first establishing a working definition of literature and identifying goals of literature instruction at all levels. Next, to facilitate integration of literature across the foreign language curriculum and bridge the gap between the more language-oriented goals of lower level courses and the more content-oriented goals of upper level courses, a multiliteracies approach to literature instruction is proposed. This presentation explores concept development in ten university French instructors during a semester-long training sequence on lesson planning. The sequence merges everyday and scientific concepts through collaborative, socially mediated activities. Descriptive data illustrate the efficacy of this professional development project and point to implications for future research.
