Introducing The Single Player Offline Game Corpus (Spoc): A Corpus Of Seven Registers From Digital Role-Playing Games, Daniel Dixon

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Faculty Publications

This paper describes the compilation and design of the Single Player Offline Game Corpus (SPOC), which is being made freely available for research and educational purposes. The SPOC was compiled by extracting the localization files from the digital directories of four popular commercial digital role-playing games: Divinity: Original Sin II, Fallout 4, the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The 3.7-million-word corpus contains more than 30,000 texts and is unique from other game corpora in that it has the following three characteristics: (1) the texts are categorized into seven registers using Biber …

Second Language (L2) Gains Through Digital Game-Based Language Learning (Dgbll): A Meta-Analysis, Daniel Dixon, Tülay O. Dixon, Eric Jordan

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Faculty Publications

Studies on digital game-based language learning (DGBLL) have increased in numbers, creating a pool of studies that can be meta-analyzed to measure the overall effect of digital gaming on second language (L2) development. The current meta-analysis targets digital games that were available to the public at the time of data collection, January of 2020, aggregating their effects on L2 development overall and across a number of moderator variables. These moderator variables include the game developers’ intended purpose of the game (educational or entertainment), outcome measures (e.g., vocabulary, overall proficiency), and several game design features such as the type of player …

A Meta-Analysis Of Hybrid Language Instruction And Call For Future Research, Tülay O. Dixon, Maryann Christison, Daniel Dixon, Adrian S. Palmer

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Faculty Publications

In this meta-analysis, we estimate the effectiveness of hybrid language instruction overall and across a number of moderator variables by aggregating effect sizes from 11 studies with 34 samples. Results suggest hybrid language instruction can be just as effective as traditional face-to-face (f2f) instruction, as indicated by the negligible differences between hybrid courses and traditional f2f courses (d = 0.14). Furthermore, studies employing within-group designs indicate that students in hybrid language classes can improve their language skills considerably (d = 1.47). This is a positive finding given that many institutions have experienced a surge in hybrid teaching due to the …

A Minority's Minority: An Ethnographic Study Of Sephardic Jewish Community In Atlanta, Zachary J. Dooley Jan 2017

A Minority's Minority: An Ethnographic Study Of Sephardic Jewish Community In Atlanta, Zachary J. Dooley

DISCOVERY: Georgia State Honors College Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores the Sephardic Community in Atlanta through the lens of an ethnographic study of a micro-culture. The methodology that was employed in order to complete this research was that of a standard ethnography, i.e. interviews, observations, and comparison with current research on the community. Throughout the paper, the Sephardic culture is contrasted with its larger Eastern European counterparts, the Ashekenazim. Their cultures, as they exist internationally as well as the Atlanta area, are a focal point of the paper so as to have a well established point of reference to which to compare the Sephardic Atlanta culture. The …

A Genre Analysis Of Second Language Classroom Discourse: Exploring The Rhetorical, Linguistic, And Contextual Dimensions Of Language Lessons, Joseph J. Lee May 2011

A Genre Analysis Of Second Language Classroom Discourse: Exploring The Rhetorical, Linguistic, And Contextual Dimensions Of Language Lessons, Joseph J. Lee

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Dissertations

The purpose of the present study is to expand our current understanding of second language classroom discourse by exploring how four English as a second language (ESL) teachers working in an intensive English program structurally organize classroom language lessons through the use of language; how students and teachers perceive the functions of the various stages in a lesson; how teachers prepare for their language lessons; and how various discourses and texts in this teaching context influence teachers‘ spoken discourse in the classroom. In order to carry out the exploratory study of language lessons, a multidimensional genre-oriented approach is utilized that …

Pronunciation Pedagogy: Second Language Teacher Cognition And Practice, Amanda A. Baker May 2011

Pronunciation Pedagogy: Second Language Teacher Cognition And Practice, Amanda A. Baker

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Dissertations

Over the past few decades, increasing research has examined the cognitions (knowledge and beliefs) of second language (L2) teachers. Such efforts have provided insight into what constitutes teachers' beliefs and knowledge about teaching, how these cognitions have developed and how they are reflected in classroom practice (see Borg, 2006). Although numerous studies have been conducted into the curricular areas of L2 grammar and, to a lesser extent, L2 literacy, far fewer have examined L2 teachers' cognitions concerning L2 pronunciation instruction. The purpose of the present study, therefore, was to explore some of the dynamic relationships that exist between L2 teachers’ …

Analysis Of Four-Word Lexical Bundles In Published Resesarch Articles Written By Turkish Scholars, Betul Bal Nov 2010

Analysis Of Four-Word Lexical Bundles In Published Resesarch Articles Written By Turkish Scholars, Betul Bal

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Theses

This study investigated the use of lexical bundles in research articles written in English by Turkish scholars. For the purpose of the study, a corpus of published research articles produced by Turkish scholars in six different academic disciplines was collected. The four-word lexical bundles that appeared at least twenty times in this one million word corpus were identified and further analyzed both structurally and functionally based on the previous taxonomies developed by Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad and Finegan (1999) and Biber, Conrad and Cortes (2004). The results of this study revealed that the lexical bundles found have structural correlates as …

Korean Teachers' Beliefs About English Language Education And Their Impacts Upon The Ministry Of Education-Initiated Reforms, Cheong Min Yook Aug 2010

Korean Teachers' Beliefs About English Language Education And Their Impacts Upon The Ministry Of Education-Initiated Reforms, Cheong Min Yook

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Dissertations

This study aims to expand studies on ESL/EFL teachers’ beliefs by investigating the relationship among Korean teachers’ beliefs about English language education in Korea, sources of their beliefs, their perceptions of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MOE)-initiated reforms in English language education, and the degree of implementation of the reforms in their classroom teaching. Toward that end, the study employed both quantitative and qualitative research instruments: a survey with a questionnaire, interviews, and observations. The study surveyed 158 in-service teachers. Among these 158 teachers, 10 were selected for interviews and observations. Each of the 10 teachers was interviewed …

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict In American, Arab, And British Media: Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis, Magdi Ahmed Kandil May 2009

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict In American, Arab, And British Media: Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis, Magdi Ahmed Kandil

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Dissertations

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the longest and most violent conflicts in modern history. The language used to represent this important conflict in the media is frequently commented on by scholars and political commentators (e.g., Ackerman, 2001; Fisk, 2001; Mearsheimer & Walt, 2007). To date, however, few studies in the field of applied linguistics have attempted a thorough investigation of the language used to represent the conflict in influential media outlets using systematic methods of linguistic analysis. The current study aims to partially bridge this gap by combining methods and analytical frameworks from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Corpus …

Cognitive Mechanisms Underlying Second Language Listening Comprehension, Guiling Hu Mar 2009

Cognitive Mechanisms Underlying Second Language Listening Comprehension, Guiling Hu

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Dissertations

This dissertation research investigates the cognitive mechanisms underlying second language (L2) listening comprehension. I use three types of sentential contexts, congruent, neutral and incongruent, to look at how L2 learners construct meaning in spoken sentence comprehension. The three types of contexts differ in their context predictability. The last word in a congruent context is highly predictable (e.g., Children are more affected by the disease than adults), the last word in a neutral context is likely but not highly predictable (e.g., Children are more affected by the disease than nurses), and the last word in an incongruent context is impossible (e.g., …

The Stigma Of "Not Pot English" In Sri Lanka: A Study Of Production Of /O/ And /O/ And Implications For Instructions, Sumudu Nishamani Wijetunge Apr 2008

The Stigma Of "Not Pot English" In Sri Lanka: A Study Of Production Of /O/ And /O/ And Implications For Instructions, Sumudu Nishamani Wijetunge

Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language Theses

The inability to differentiate the English vowels /o/ and / O/ has become a stigmatized marker of a lower prestige and widespread dialect of Sri Lankan English. This lower prestige (LP) dialect is often referred to with the derogative phrase “Not pot English”. This study aims to investigate the production of the vowel contrast by native Sinhala speakers of English. To this end, speech samples of three adult learners were analyzed. The findings of the study are discussed according to hypotheses of the Speech Learning Model, which suggests that the existent L1 specific phonetic categories hinder the formation of new …
