Glocal English compares the usage patterns and stylistic conventions of the world’s two dominant native varieties of English (British and American English) with Nigerian English, which ranks as the English world’s fastest-growing non-native variety courtesy of the unrelenting ubiquity of the Nigerian (English-language) movie industry in Africa and the Black Atlantic Diaspora. Using contemporary examples from the mass media and the author’s rich experiential data, the book isolates the peculiar structural, grammatical, and stylistic characteristics of Nigerian English and shows its similarities as well as its often humorous differences with British and American English. In this chapter, I review recent sociolinguistic studies that have addressed the language of both ‘early’ and ‘late’ bilinguals in different sorts of settings, i.e. second language (L2) classroom learners, study abroad participants and immersion learners, HL speakers, and (im)migrant bilinguals. I highlight principal points of commonality in research endeavors that underscore the impact of linguistic variability, context of acquisition, social interaction, and speaker agency and identity on processes of formal and informal language learning, development, and use. There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. This article takes a governance perspective to examine the contemporary revitalization of Guaraní, a “repressed” language that is spoken by a majority of the population in Paraguay. A historical overview highlights the striking endurance of the language in spite of two centuries of official subjugation. The article traces the positive impact of political democratization since 1989 on the revitalization of Guaraní by examining four interrelated areas that are closely linked to the governance agenda: the education system, the media, the political system, and popular culture. This study analyzes the variation of syllable- and word-final /s/ among two generations of Cubans in Miami, Florida (USA): older, early exile immigrants who arrived in Miami as adults in the 1960s and 1970s, and young Miami-born Cubans whose maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated to Miami from Cuba prior to 1980. Since sibilant weakening is generally considered to be an ongoing language change in Caribbean Spanish, it was hypothesized that the young generation of English-dominant bilinguals would present with much higher rates of aspiration and deletion, in keeping with Carmen Silva-Corvalán’s (1994) hypothesis that linguistic changes are accelerated in situations …

This article addresses the situation of lower-proficiency heritage language learners of Spanish in terms of their linguistic similarities to second language learners. The analysis highlights grammatical and lexical features in the oral discourse of Spanish heritage and second language learners at intermediate and advanced levels of study, establishing common linguistic ground between the two groups. Given the similarities, the article emphasizes the current need for courses designed to accommodate lower-proficiency heritage learners, integrating principles and aspects of second language acquisition theory and pedagogy.

This study explores attitudes toward Spanish with respect to language education, language policy and language use in two different United States urban settings—one bilingual and another essentially monolingual. A 50-item sociolinguistic questionnaire was administered to 359 Hispanic and non-Hispanic university students at different levels of Spanish language study in Miami, Florida and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Analysis revealed broad acceptance of Spanish in US public life in both cities. However, more conservative attitudes toward ‘English only’ education and Official English policies were expressed by Miami students and by beginning-level students in general. Traditional theoretical models of language variation, bilingualism, and language shift in the US must be reconceptualized with the post-2000 context, and Spanish language educators must respond to the contemporary demands of their profession.
