Despite conspicuous progress in providing open access to scholarly articles, there is a steady, unsettling undercurrent stirred by traditional publishers that could undermine the green route to open access. This article examines data and discourse to better understand publisher perspectives on self-archiving and, based on this understanding, urges action from open access advocates.

This presentation focuses on a global current awareness service designed to meet the knowledge needs of the institution from which it originates. In so doing, it also meets the needs of journalists, researchers, faculty, students, professional practitioners, and policymakers concerned with the same issues globally. It provides the institutional links between partnering institutions that sustain the relationships for the future. This serves as a model for how libraries can become supporting pillars of their organizations by tapping into and meeting KM needs.

Purpose – To provide a case study focusing on efforts Lied Library has undertaken in collection development and management, space utilization, electronic access, web site revisions, and staff training in government publications. Design/methodology/approach – The construction of and move into Lied Library have coincided with major developments in the production and dissemination of federal, state and local government publications and other information products. Digital Atlanta: Engaging Students With Their Local Environment, Bryan Sinclair, Joseph Hurley

Georgia State University Library is connecting and engaging students with their local Atlanta environment through a new interdisciplinary digital project involving historical city planning maps. Designed as an educational digital humanities platform, "Planning Atlanta: A New City in the Making, 1930s–1990s," is currently being used by students in various disciplines. Through this dynamic platform, students, educators, and the public are engaging with their surroundings, discovering connections about the built environment and the past, and changing their perception of Atlanta in ways that would not be possible without the aid of this digital collection.

Most publishers with self-archiving policies in the SHERPA RoMEO database allow authors to deposit their articles in a repository or post them to a website – supporting the green route to open access. Nevertheless, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) enthusiastically endorsed legislation proposed and defeated twice in the United States to prohibit federal agencies from mandating repository deposits of articles reporting on research they funded. The AAP also endorsed the Finch Report issued in the United Kingdom.
