Undergraduate outreach about Open Access (OA) lies at the intersection of information literacy and Scholarly Communications. Reframing undergraduates as current and future scholars allows us to treat them as agents within the Scholarly Communications network. Students who have mastered fundamental research skills are prepared to view them through the critical lens of Scholarly Communications in order to learn both how to locate resources and how those resources are created. This educational approach highlights the various barriers scholars can face in the research process, as well as provides an awareness of information privilege.

During Open Education Week 2019, Musselman Library's Department of Scholarly Communications educated the campus community about issues of textbook affordability and about the development of Open Educational Resources. This poster provides basic information about what Open Education is and how it is a response to the high cost of course materials, which creates barriers for many students who cannot afford to purchase their books. Open Education seeks to create equitable access to all course materials and transform traditional ideas about pedagogy.

First-year students completing Musselman Library’s portion of the fall 2018 Charting Your Course (CYC) orientation received one of these passports before beginning the activity. Student and faculty authors enjoy many benefits from making their work open, and the hosting institution receives international visibility. A repository can be a DIY publishing platform. Learn how Gettysburg College got started and hear about the wide range of materials that are being shared. Gettysburg’s repository, The Cupola, currently includes over 5,000 works that have been downloaded 420,000 times... and counting.

Editing and publishing a student research journal is a high-impact educational practice that libraries are uniquely suited to support. Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library hosts three student-edited journals in our open access institutional repository. We train student editors to use the online journal publishing platform to receive, assign, and review submissions. We also expose them to the scope of undergraduate publishing beyond our institution, describe the benefits of open access publishing to authors (including sharing their own use metrics), invite professors who edit professional journals to share their expertise with the students, and facilitate a discussion about how their editing process …
