We Did It! A Collaborative Collection Development Project At The Ku And Ksu Libraries, Lea H. Currie, Mira Greene

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

For many years, the KU and KSU Libraries have looked for a method of combining their resources to create a collaborative collection development project. When KSU joined YBP as their main book vendor, it became evident that such a project might get off the ground since KU Libraries were longtime customers of YBP. Since Proquest was the main vendor for e-books for both schools and YBP sold e-books from Proquest, KU and KSU decided to approach their e-book specialist with Proquest to find out if a collaborative demand-driven (DDA) e-book project was possible. Proquest negotiated with the publishers the two …

Making Room For Change: Rightsizing Psu’S Axe Library Serials Collection, Barbara M. Pope

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

Print serials collection development has long been a traditional role of academic librarians. However, in the last 20 years, academic libraries’ print serials ownership has declined and online access has begun to take its place, both partially due to concerns with flat or declining budgets as well as lack of space and the need to repurpose this limited space. Pittsburg State University’s Axe Library faces the challenge of balancing its print and electronic serials collections at a university whose programs sometimes do not draw enough on library resources. In an effort to create a meaningful discovery experience for the university …

Case Study - A Call To Action: Migrating The Reveille To Digital Commons, Elizabeth Chance, Jennifer Sauer

Jennifer Sauer

Like many institutions, Forsyth Digital Collections presents their content on more than one platform. Since the acquisition of Digital Commons and the launch of the FHSU Scholars Repository in January 2016, there has been an institutional effort to determine which platform is best suited to displaying existing content. Beginning in 2009, the FHSU Reveille Yearbooks collection had been hosted in CONTENTdm. The user experience for this collection left much to be desired. In 2014 additional effort was put into improving the user experience in CONTENTdm for this collection. However, in the spring of 2017 it was determined that the Reveille …

Post-Acquisition Management And The Issue Of Inaccessibility, Beth Caruso Oct 2017

Post-Acquisition Management And The Issue Of Inaccessibility, Beth Caruso

Charleston Library Conference

Though advocates are calling for publishers to develop born-accessible e-books to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) standards and the EPUB 3.0 measures now backed by the Society for Disability Studies, the realistic timespan for this achievement to become standard practice is far from ideal. To equitably serve users with disabilities, stronger technology and a mindset toward accessibility must become the standard in electronic collections. Librarians are expected to have a strong working knowledge of the library’s collections but receive little training in best practices for assisting patrons with disabilities. We cannot wait …

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, Philip Chike Aghadiuno Oct 2017

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, Philip Chike Aghadiuno

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Manuscripts sent to editors are often in different states of crafting or drafting. It is the task of the editor to help the author by polishing the manuscripts to the acceptable standard. Editors may seek clarifications from the authors about the missing links in the drafts. They may ask for references of strong claims, improvement of the draft, refinement of the argument, adjustment in tone, chapter re-organisation, fixing grammar points, among others. Editors raise these flags in the editorial process through author queries. The nature of queries written by the editor for the author differs from the ones written by …

The Need For The Establishment Of E-Records And Ehealth Legislation And Policy Framework In The Health Sector In Zimbabwe, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Legislation is key to the establishment of eHealth initiatives. Without legislation, authority is not set and the privacy, confidentiality and other threats affecting records and information in electronic platforms are compromised. It is therefore key that legislation for eHealth and e-records be established. Zimbabwe is applying eHealth initiatives in the form of an electronic National Health Information System (NHIS) and other initiatives. However, worrying is the fact that Zimbabwe has not paid attention to the development of legislation and policies for eHealth and e-records management in general. This study sought to make a case for the establishment of e-records and …

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi Oct 2017

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Indigenous knowledge points to the fact that Africa has been able to generate, test and apply knowledge through its own methodologies and approaches. This knowledge sustained communities for years prior to colonialism which somehow downplayed the value of indigenous knowledge and promoted western knowledge systems. Colonialism created dependence on western knowledge systems and Africa has over the years neglected its own rich indigenous knowledge. This paper sought tohighlight challenges faced in the quest to incorporate IK into developmental goals and projects. Furthermore, the study also sought to recommend ways through which Africans can promote IK in its developmental projects. A …

The paper introduces bibliotaxonomy as a generic name for those aspects of Library and Information Science (LIS) scholarship that deal with the processing and organization of books, documents and other information materials. In a time where large-scale agribusiness is fomented by Monsanto chemicals and seed control, these farmers work to maintain acequia agriculture. Opening Talk: What Is Access? Thinking Beyond Online Availability To A More Just Scholarly Communication System, Charlotte Roh

SJSU Open Access Conference

We've come so far with the open access movement on the institutional, state, federal, and even international level. It's fair to say that the open access movement has in fact changed the landscape of scholarly publishing. But there are also things that haven't changed, and injustices that remain, that we need to consider in how scholarly knowledge is traditionally constructed.
