Discover Datasets In The Library Catalog, Yukari Sugiyama, Rowena Griem, Tachtorn Meier

Yale Day of Data

As digital scholarship evolves in academia, there is a growing importance and increasing acquisition of datasets at Yale University Library. YUL has over 10,000 datasets ranging from statistical data to linguistics corpora, GIS data, and image datasets.

(Un)Structuring For The Next Generation: New Possibilities For Library Data With Nosql, Matthew D. Harrington, Dennis B. Christman

Charleston Library Conference

For many years, libraries have relied upon relational databases (RDBMS) to store, manipulate, and query various types of data, and this database model works extremely well when data are highly structured. As the data become more complex, however, the relational database model strains under the burden of maintaining complex joins, which can decrease a database's performance and limit its functionality. Furthermore, data are not always best represented in the RDBMS's flat, tabular format. Library data often require flexibility and extensibility to accommodate the increasing volume and variety of library resources and metadata. To address these issues, transforming the underlying structure …

Data Curation Workshop: Tips And Tools For Today, Matthew M. Benzing Oct 2019

Data Curation Workshop: Tips And Tools For Today, Matthew M. Benzing

Charleston Library Conference

The current state of research data is like a disorganized photo collection: a mix of formats scattered across different media without a lot of authority control. That is changing as the need to make data available to researchers across the world is becoming recognized. Researchers know that their data needs to be maintained and made accessible, but often they do not have the time or the inclination to get involved in all of the details. This provides an excellent opportunity for librarians. Data curation is the process of preparing data to be made available in a repository with the goal …

From The Winter Of Messy Data Into The Spring Of Standardization: E-Book Vendor Data Reenvisioned, Bonita Pollock, Brian Falato, Xiying Mi Oct 2019

From The Winter Of Messy Data Into The Spring Of Standardization: E-Book Vendor Data Reenvisioned, Bonita Pollock, Brian Falato, Xiying Mi

Charleston Library Conference

The University of South Florida (USF) Libraries run several projects which involve the collection and display of ebook vendor metadata including seven evidence-based acquisitions (EBA) programs, one patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) program and the eBooks for Classroom Plus (EB+) database. These projects are the main focus of the Libraries’ Textbook Affordability Project (TAP). The TAP initiative’s goal is help reduce textbook cost to students by providing faculty with ebook alternatives. The metadata used in these projects is collected from a variety of vendor sources including titles lists, K-Bart files entitlement lists and Marc records. Compiling data from various sources into a …

Integrating Your Repository In To Oclc Using The Digital Collections Gateway, Deann Brame May 2019

Integrating Your Repository In To Oclc Using The Digital Collections Gateway, Deann Brame

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019

Winthrop University has an extensive archives and special collections that has never been cataloged. Digital Commons @ Winthrop officially launched in January 2016 and our archives staff worked diligently to add items to our repository. The question then became how can we integrate this work in to our ILS system. Seeing a need for action but without the time or manpower to individually catalog these collections we turned to the Digital Collection Gateway. In this presentation we will discuss the process we took and are still taking in order to incorporate our Digital Commons content in to our ILS. Topics …

Today Crossref, Tomorrow The World: Managing Xml Crosswalks With Altova Mapforce, Jeffrey M. Mortimore May 2019

Today Crossref, Tomorrow The World: Managing Xml Crosswalks With Altova Mapforce, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019

Altova MapForce is an intuitive graphical mapping tool for manipulating and converting any structured data, including OAI-PMH XML, into any scheme without specialized knowledge of XML or XSLT. With Altova MapForce, repository managers who lack dedicated XML programming or development support can streamline creation of XML stylesheets and simplify XML conversions. During this session, we will look specifically at crosswalking bepress journal metadata to Crossref Deposit and DOAJ Native XML.

Lightning Talk: The Language Archive: Migrating To An Easier, Sustainable Open-Source Solution., Jeroen Geerts Apr 2019

Lightning Talk: The Language Archive: Migrating To An Easier, Sustainable Open-Source Solution., Jeroen Geerts

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The Language Archive at the Max Planck Institute Nijmegen (https://archive.mpi.nl) is an extensive online repository of language resources. The archive was developed using in-house solutions, including metadata creation tools, depositing tools and an archive-browser. Development had been going on for more than 15 years, but was difficult and expensive to maintain. Additionally, some of these tools had were fairly complex to use, not meeting current user needs. Therefore, the choice was made to migrate to a more sustainable open-source solution, easier to use, maintain and to develop upon.

This presentation will provide insight in choosing a new repository solution, …

Analogies And Comparisons For Stm Data Bodies, Phillip M. Cunio, Brien Flewelling Feb 2019

Analogies And Comparisons For Stm Data Bodies, Phillip M. Cunio, Brien Flewelling

Space Traffic Management Conference

Space Traffic Management (STM) has already demonstrated its potential to be extremely data-intensive. The large number of objects on orbit today, if observed constantly throughout their lifetimes, could produce a staggeringly large number of observations that might in turn generate large numbers of orbits. Orbit data with a lengthy time history can be used to produce estimates of maneuver frequency, susceptibility to natural forces such as drag, and (if combined with photometric data) assessments of behavioral patterns of life.

A future of mega-constellations and a growing number of nations and organizations with assets on orbit would make it likely that …

Astria Ontology: Open, Standards-Based, Data-Aggregated Representation Of Space Objects, Jennie Wolfgang, Kathleen Krysher, Michael Slovenski, Unmil P. Karadkar, Shiva Iyer, Moriba K. Jah

Space Traffic Management Conference

The necessity for standards-based ontologies for long-term sustainability of space operations and safety of increasing space flights has been well-established [6, 7]. Current ontologies, such as DARPA’s OrbitOutlook [5], are not publicly available, complicating efforts for their broad adoption. Most sensor data is siloed in proprietary databases [2] and provided only to authorized users, further complicating efforts to create a holistic view of resident space objects (RSOs) in order to enhance space situational awareness (SSA).

The ASTRIA project is developing an open data model with the goal of aggregating data about RSOs, parts, space weather, and governing policies in order …
