Archivists and archival collections can often be siloed into the “special” corner of their parent library: under described, underutilized, and often even unknown. Finding a path out of isolation may require taking a new look at collection management needs and considering new partners in the work. Collaboration with colleagues can result in positive ripple effects that extend beyond the initial project goals. The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the collection and preservation of oral histories. The more than 9,000 interviews in our collection provide a unique look into Kentucky and American history.

While the Center for Oral History has developed an excellent stand-alone catalog of the collections, projects and interviews in the collection utilizing Drupal and DACS, we wanted to provide discovery through our online catalog, our discovery system (InfoKat Discovery) and WorldCat.

As part of the Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP), two pieces of software were developed to support the collection development activities of FDLP libraries in the Southeast. Most are very familiar with the ASERL Disposition Database, but some may have forgotten its quiet counter-part, the ASERL COE Database. This database is comprised of brief cataloging records that indicate holdings for all Center of Excellence (COE) libraries (and other contributing depository libraries) in the Southeast and serves as a tool for analyzing the completeness of COE collection(s) and to identify gaps.

The newest module in the Voyager suite, Global Data Change, allows for batch editing of bibliographic, holdings and authority records. The University of Kentucky Libraries has used this module since 2012, and will share specifics about the top ten (or so) projects that have been implemented using this module. Projects include several significant enhancements to bibliographic variable fields, including changes due to RDA implementation, record deletion, location changes after collections have been moved, the removal of obsolete information, the addition of local standard notes, and the addition of authorized access points.

Cataloging ebooks is difficult to do well, as they are often purchased in large collections, sometimes with only low-quality cataloging copy available. MARC records may be provided upfront in a large batch, or trickle in one at a time as they become available. Records may contain links that point nowhere, to the wrong book, or to an offer to sell you the book you already own. Loading records sight unseen may introduce inconsistency or overlay good print records with poor electronic ones, making the catalog much more difficult to search.
