This document is intended to assist catalogers in creating records for streaming media according to instructions within Resource Description and Access (RDA), the successor to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2). Like the original Best Practices for Cataloging Streaming Media, made available in 2008, it covers both streaming video and audio, including those that are born digital, as well as those that are created from an existing resource in another format, such as a video issued on DVD or videocassette. Its main focus is on resources that are “streaming” over the Internet in real-time, rather than resources that are not …
Cataloging Manuscripts And Archival Collections, Rebecca A. Wiederhold
Cataloging Manuscripts And Archival Collections, Rebecca A. Wiederhold
Faculty Publications
Catalogers are increasingly responsible for creating metadata for a variety of unusual items. In the Beyond Books: Cataloging Special Format Items preconference at ULA 2019, participants learned how to catalog manuscripts/archival collections, artists’ books, zines, and posters. This webinar will reprise the Manuscripts and Archival Collections segment of that session, educating participants on when it’s appropriate to catalog special collections material archivally as a collection versus on an item level. Whether you have finding aids to use as a base for your catalog record or you are working directly with the materials, guidelines for using DACS and RDA for manuscript …

This best practices document is intended to assist catalogers in creating bibliographic records for objects, which RDA refers to as three dimensional forms, according to RDA instructions. This document provides guidance for the most common object situations encountered in libraries. Each section includes examples that reflect the RDA instructions. A list of resources and a selection of full MARC record examples illustrating common situations encountered in cataloging objects (of various types) completes the document. The Objects Task Force especially worked on the examples to provide a variety of materials that fall bibliographically under Objects. The Task Force found at least …

Linked Data, Bibframe And Rda Walk Into A Bar..., Amy B. Parsons
Faculty Bibliography
This poster illustrates basic introduction and concepts of linked data and how it relates to RDA and Bibframe. Currently catalogers in libraries are struggling with learning these new concepts and keeping up with our traditional cataloging knowledge and workflows. Linked data brings us a step closer to global bibliographic control. The MARC record is not going away any time soon but catalogers should be aware of these concepts and models as they are being developed for our workflows in the future.

Final Recommendations Of The Joint Mla/Olac 33x/34x Task Group, Joint Mla/Olac 33x/34x Task Group
OLAC Publications and Training Materials
The initial impetus for the formation of the task group came from Jay Weitz's request for input from both our groups as he was working on the OCLC-MARC update 2017, particularly in reference to the 23 additions to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list (http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/genre-form.html). This request led to the realization that best practices of both groups varied in regard to MARC 344 and 347. It seemed like a good idea to have both groups discuss these same issues together. The group considered 3 issues:
- Inconsistent treatment of RDA and non-RDA terms in MARC 344 and 347
- Consideration …

OLAC Publications and Training Materials
Best Practices for Cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs Using RDA and MARC21 builds upon the work of the 2008 Guide to Cataloging DVD and Blu-ray Discs Using AACR2r and MARC21, which in turn updated the 2002 Guide to Cataloging DVDs Using AACR2r Chapters 7 and 9 created by the DVD Cataloging Task Force of OLAC.
The focus of this new document is to provide a set of “best practice” recommendations rather than a step-by-step instruction manual for cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs. One reason for this shift is that RDA cataloging practice is far from settled, particularly in regard …

Applying Rda To Contentdm & Islandora, Sai Deng
Applying Rda To Contentdm & Islandora, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The Resource Description and Access (RDA) standard has been widely implemented in integrated library systems and its application with MARC has long been discussed, but its applicability in content and digital asset management systems and with non-MARC standards hasn't been much addressed. The national RDA non-MARC tests found that it is not easy to evaluate RDA "without an application available to aptly manage and display the data," however, to accommodate RDA in existing content and digital asset management systems still remains an issue. This presentation will address how RDA has been applied in cataloging and migrating digital materials in CONTENTdm …

Applying Rda To Digital Resources Metadata, Sai Deng, Peter Spyers-Duran
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This presentation will describe how Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been applied in cataloging, updating, and migrating digital resources at the University of Central Florida Libraries. Presenters will explain the similarities and differences of using RDA to catalog traditional serials in an Integrated Library System (ILS) and digitized serials and serial analytics in a Content Management System (CMS). Examples will be used to illustrate the issues of using RDA in conjunction with other metadata standards such as Dublin Core (DC) and Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) to catalog digital resources including digitized newspapers and monographs, such as: relating RDA …

Hitting A Moving Target: Cataloging In The Age Of Emerging Technologies, Robert L. Bothmann
Hitting A Moving Target: Cataloging In The Age Of Emerging Technologies, Robert L. Bothmann
Library Services Publications
The proliferation of content in electronic format and other emerging technologies was a chief impetus in the creation of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, the ISBD Area 0, and the development of RDA: Resource Description and Access. RDA in particular relies upon extensive sets of small vocabularies used in bibliographic data elements to describe carriers and content. These vocabularies provide a foundation for universal bibliographic control that supports Linked Data. However, some established technologies do not have appropriate vocabulary terms in RDA, relegating these resources to an undocumented area of description that inhibits universal bibliographic control. In conclusion, there …

Dancing In The Stacks: Dance Works And The Concept Of Authorship In Libraries, Dominique Bourassa
Dancing In The Stacks: Dance Works And The Concept Of Authorship In Libraries, Dominique Bourassa
Library Staff Publications
It is self-evident to choreographers, dancers and dance scholars that dances are works in their own right as much as literary and musical works are. However, from an American library perspective, this fact was not fully acknowledged until 20 years ago. Indeed, the historical mistreatment of dance works has evolved from their once total absence from subject taxonomies, to their being classified with works about recreation instead of among the “serious” arts, to their being subordinated to music. The situation greatly improved in 1994 with the publication by the Library of Congress (LC) of special cataloging rules that finally treat …

Positioning Library Data For The Semantic Web: Recent Developments In Resource Description, Kimmy Szeto
Publications and Research
Recent developments in resource description standards and technologies have aimed at moving cataloging practice to the web environment and making library data available for exchange and reuse on the Semantic Web. As the library community looks outward and forward, library standards and technologies are converging with Web practices in three areas: content description, data models, and data exchange. This article captures the essence of the core standards and technologies that underlie the daily work of practitioners of library service, including Resource Description and Access (RDA), Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), the Linked Data environment, Resource Description Framework (RDF), and …
