Information Literacy As A Discipline In The Age Of Ai: A Conversation, Karen Kaufmann, Clarence Maybee
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Is Information Literacy (IL) a discipline in itself? How does that situate with our current climate of AI in the information ecology?
The presentation will focus on the rationale for recognizing IL as a discipline, and the inquiry of IL as a Discipline in the age of AI. In the session, we will explore the opportunities afforded by recognizing information literacy as a discipline. Participants will be able to share their ideas of what would be included in an IL curriculum or research inquiry situated in the AI information ecology via an online question-and-answer platform inviting small discussions and an …
Teaching Students To Read Regression Results: A Statistical Literacy Lesson Plan For Librarians, Giovanna Badia
Teaching Students To Read Regression Results: A Statistical Literacy Lesson Plan For Librarians, Giovanna Badia
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Descriptive and inferential statistics are taught to students in many disciplines. More classroom time is often spent on the theory behind different statistical methods that investigate relationships between variables rather than on how to interpret the results obtained to answer the research question that started the process. While statistical software (such as R, Stata, and SPSS) has made it easier to undertake regression with any dataset, the output produced remains challenging to understand and explain to intended audiences. To address this issue, the author created a 90-minute workshop that teaches students how to read tables of descriptive statistics and linear …

Could Ernest Boyer’S Foundational Perspective Of The Scholarship Of Teaching Help Save Faculty Librarians?, Douglas Wayman
The Christian Librarian
This is a recovery project for Ernest Boyer's scholarship of teaching as presented in Scholarship Reconsidered. It addresses a reinterpretation of Boyer’s scholarship of teaching promulgated by his Carnegie successor, Lee Shulman and popularized throughout the Academy. Serendipitously, that reinterpretation gave birth to what is now known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), which has undoubtedly benefitted the Academy. While this project focuses on the reinterpretation's ramifications for tenure-track academic library faculty who teach, it also argues that the foundational interpretation of Boyer's model could benefit the Academy at large, and that the two interpretations are not mutually …
The 80/20 Rule For Legal Research, Olivia R. Smith Schlink
The 80/20 Rule For Legal Research, Olivia R. Smith Schlink
Library Staff Online Publications
A few semesters ago I was discussing the value of secondary sources with a student when they paused to think, then described secondary sources as “kind of like the 80/20 Rule, but different.” I’d never heard of the 80/20 Rule, but I jotted it down onto a Post-It note to look into later. Fast-forward to today and I now introduce my students to what I’ve dubbed “the 80/20 Rule for Legal Research” in all classes about secondary sources.

Using Zines In The Classroom And How To Make A Single Page Booklet Zine, Anne Hays Adkison
Open Educational Resources
This OER includes an introductory essay, "Some Thoughts on Teaching with Zines in the College Classroom," which discusses three ways one could use zines. 1. teach about zines, 2, create a zine to share information with your students, 3. ask your students to make a zine. At the end of the essay, there are screenshots of the pages of a mini-zine that teach the reader (that's you!) how to make a zine out of a single sheet of paper. Finally, the last page is a printable zine, which you can fold up and cut with your newfound skills, and hand …

Using “Live” Assignments For Formative Assessment, Olivia R. Smith Schlinck
Library Staff Online Publications
At the Teaching the Teachers Conference a few weeks ago, I gave a demonstration of a formative assessment style we’ve been using at my institution for the past year and a half: a live assignment, AKA the Research Practicum. The presentation was virtual; COVID struck, of course, and I couldn’t get on a plane and fly to Portland. Fortunately, the nature of this assessment lends itself beautifully to a pivot to virtual because it is already entirely virtual. The Research Practicum uses Zoom or some other video conferencing platform and asks students to research while sharing their screen as their …

It’s been nearly two years since the largest civil rights movement – the protests stemming from the murder of George Floyd by a police officer – swept the United States. That means it has also been nearly two years since law schools across the country released statements and created taskforces and enacted initiatives to inject principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into the school halls.

Last month, I posted to this blog the results of my study comparing the salaries of tenure-track law professors and law librarians who teach required, credit-bearing classes. The reaction was overwhelming; clearly, the proof that law librarians were underpaid – something many librarians had assumed for many years – hit a chord within the profession. Librarians across the country contacted me publicly and privately to express their shock (or lack thereof), their frustration, their personal anecdotes about being underpaid and struggling to make ends meet. Eventually, this culminated in an event hosted by the AALL Research Crits Caucus on Monday, …

When I started in my current role as an instructional librarian, I was given space to make the changes I thought necessary to improve an already-changing legal research program. I’ve made changes – some small, some more major – in both the 1L and upper-level research curriculum, but there is more to do. In particular, I’m not entirely satisfied with how we teach legal research to 1Ls.
