Public Libraries In Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), India: An Explorative Study, Mayank Yuvaraj Dr., Ambrish Kumar Maurya Mr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the current status of public libraries of Varanasi. A structured questionnaire was designed and personally distributed to 100 respondents over a period of seven months for the study. Responses present a dismal outlook of the libraries. Financial deficit and lack of computers, infrastructure and staff have stagnated the development of these libraries. These libraries continue to stand the same way as they stood 60 years before.

University Libraries Presentations

This study explores the use of local public libraries by expatriate Japanese families staying in a micro-urban, university-centered community in the United States, with a specific focus on their reading and information gathering practices. The data used for the study was collected through semi-structured interviews the authors conducted in 2013. The expatriate families in this study consist of those who temporarily live in the area with clear prospects of returning to Japan. All of the families the authors interviewed included a member who was either a corporate transferee (i.e. an employee of a transnational corporation assigned to work in a …

A Qualitative Examination About Providers’ Perceptions And Recommendations Regarding The Role Of Public Librarians In Addressing Communities’ Health Literacy., Van Ta Park, Lili Luo, Denise Rosidi

Faculty Publications

We assessed health care providers’ perspectives on libraries as a source of health information and elicited input on how to adequately prepare public librarians to provide health information services. Sample text-based reference transactions were shown to determine whether they think the health inquiries were adequately answered. Results showed that participants had favorable perspectives about public libraries, and thought that the public librarians’ role includes addressing the health literacy community needs. Participants provided recommendations for public librarians to improve health literacy. To enhance the ability of public librarians to meet the health literacy needs of their communities, diverse perspectives such as …

A Statewide Survey Of Censorship And Intellectual Freedom, Kathleen M. Monks, Anne M. Gaines, Caitlin A. Marineau

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article presents the results of a survey given to public and school library workers to gain a foundational understanding of censorship within the state of Idaho. Our population was asked questions regarding position demographics; experience with challenges; the tracking, reporting and assistance sought; and the contents of said challenge policies. Special attention was also given to the history of censorship, both nationally and statewide, and the demographic, political, and legislative characteristics of Idaho, to provide a conceptual framework for the findings. The results of this statewide survey address an important and uninvestigated segment of national challenges and Idaho librarianship.

Review Of Reflecting On The Future Of Academic And Public Libraries By Peter Hernon And Joseph R. Matthews, W. Bede Mitchell Jan 2014

Review Of Reflecting On The Future Of Academic And Public Libraries By Peter Hernon And Joseph R. Matthews, W. Bede Mitchell

Library Faculty Publications

Review Excerpt: A book about trends and issues shaping the evolution of American libraries by Peter Hernon and Joseph Matthews is almost self-recommending. The authors have many years of teaching, research, and service to the profession under their belts and are recognized as significant and influential leaders. Reflecting on the Future of Academic and Public Libraries offers guidance to library leaders on how to anticipate and manage change. Hernon and Matthews fear that librarians who are reactive and deal only incrementally with today’s profound challenges will preside over the withering of libraries into little used warehouses of legacy collections. The …

The Relevance And Adequacy Of The Ashanti Regional Library, Kumasi, Ghana: An Appraisal By Users, Kwaku Agyen-Gyasi, Hagar Atta-Oteng

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Public libraries provide resources and services in a variety of media to meet the needs of users for education, information and personal development. The provision of quality information will always have a positive impact on the patronage of these libraries. This is because the users’ ability to access relevant information and make effective use of them to a large extent determines their willingness to visit the library in question. This paper assesses the relevance and adequacy of public library resources at the Ashanti Regional Library in Kumasi. Data for the study were obtained through the use of structured questionnaire. A …

“Pure Delight And Professional Development”: The Reading Practices And Library Use Of An Active Poetry Community, Carey Toane, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Abstract:
This paper reports the findings of an online survey designed to explore the reading practices, library habits, and book acquisition of adult members of an active poetry community (n = 32) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Findings show the close relationship between poetry reading and poetry writing and the tight interweaving of poetry throughout the working and personal lives of respondents. Reading and finding out about poetry are also highly social in nature with a clear reliance on the poetry community rather than the public library. Our findings have implications for the roles of reading institutions such as bookstores, …
