Using Curriculum Mapping As A Tool To Align The Information Literacy And Evidence-Based Research Learning Outcomes In Nursing Curriculum, Jane Wu
Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This research investigated how to use curriculum mapping as a curriculum-integration tool to identify the components of information literacy (IL) and evidence-based practice (EBP) in the nursing curriculum for the future systematic incorporation of information literacy components in teaching EBP. The primary objective is to strengthen information literacy and evidence-based research competency. The ACRL information literacy framework in Higher Education, Information Literacy Competency Standards for Nursing, EBP Competencies, and the EBP research model were used to provide structure to create a map and crosswalk of information literacy and EBP student learning outcomes. We obtained 59 copies of the nursing undergraduate …

"Glad She Was There, Otherwise I Would Have Failed": Student Perceptions Of An Embedded Librarian, Susan Franzen, Mallory Jallas, Joshua Newport, Caitlin Stewart, Allison Rand
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Embedded librarianship offers students, faculty, and librarians the opportunity to work closely together. After many years of collaborating with faculty partners and assisting students both inside the classroom and out, an embedded librarian in an undergraduate nursing research course sought the student perspective on having an embedded librarian.
In spring 2021, the research team scheduled focus groups to measure students’ perceptions of the embedded librarian’s impact on their research experience. Twenty-four students in five focus groups participated via Zoom. The group members met with students to capture firsthand accounts of their experiences.
This poster presentation will highlight students’ perceptions of …

Shifting Taxonomies In Home Care Nursing Information Behavior: Patients, Pandemic, Community, Richard P. Smiraglia, Edmund Pajarillo, Elizabeth Milonas, Sergey Zherebchevsky
Publications and Research
IKOS has continued to monitor the nursing information behavior (NIB) of home care nurses. In earlier reports we described how we developed an online taxonomy of NIB. We then took on a qualitative analysis of video representations of home care nursing in the pandemic. Merging the codes from two rounds of open coding yielded a set of categories (or axes) that could be used to construct a narrative analysis. Contextual quotations from the video transcripts further reveal the intensity of the potential taxonomic extension. The importance of this research for knowledge organization is the understanding we develop concerning shifting taxonomies …

Libraries And Mental Health Initiatives: A Literature Review, Megan Smith
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic has increased the mental health needs of communities across America. Public libraries have responded by utilizing the existing resources they developed such as training staff in Mental Health First Aid and employing social workers and nurses. In addition, libraries have created new targeted programs to address mental health during the covid-19 pandemic. This literature review discusses how these various factors relate and further directions for research.

Ct-Nib Taxonomy For Nursing Information Behavior: Ko In The Pandemic, Elizabeth Milonas, Sergey Zherebchevsky, Richard P. Smiraglia
Publications and Research
As COVID-19 emerged on the world stage a challenge arose to help inform the knowledge base in home health-care nursing. Connecting current experience with the Pajarillo theory "The Nub of Nursing Information Behavior (NIB" was a first step. To provide a taxonomy of NIB, standard domain analytical tools for ontology extraction were employed using Pajarillo's text. Analysis generated frequency distributions of terms and phrases which were then sorted and disambiguated to generate a list of phenomena. Co-word analysis generated visualizations to suggest regions that might constitute facets and sub-facets. Facet analysis yielded six major facets and 17 sub-facets. The NANDA …

We’Re Both Your Librarian: A Course Collaboration Between An Academic Library And A Health Sciences Library, Stephanie Evers Ard
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The University of South Alabama is in the process of merging its academic library and health sciences library, which have previously functioned as essentially separate entities. This ongoing process requires many changes, from budget and staff considerations, to revisiting the roles the librarians play in their respective academic communities. This last concern led to a collaboration between two librarians--the Assistant Director for Strategic Initiatives at the health sciences library and the Social Sciences and Student Engagement Librarian at the academic library--in response to a faculty request for an embedded librarian to support a fully-online graduate nursing class in scholarly writing. …

Journals Bibliometric Portfolios; Case Of Nursing Research, Helena Blazun Vošner Phd, Peter Kokol Prof
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Number of journals is raising exponentially. Consequently authors have a problem which journal to select when publishing their research. Journal portfolios including information like impact factors and productivity trends, state of the art topics, topics evolution and citation patterns might help authors to select the journal where their paper will have optimal chances to be published, read and cited. To build portfolios we used two approaches; namely descriptive bibliometric analysis to extract distribution of types of documents, most prolific authors, institutions, countries, citation histories, etc. and bibliometric mapping to visualize the content
Our study showed that journals portfolios can improve …
Elevating Patient Education Through State-Wide Instruction Of Nurses And Patient Educators On Consumer Health Resources, Lindsay Blake, Alice Jaggers
Elevating Patient Education Through State-Wide Instruction Of Nurses And Patient Educators On Consumer Health Resources, Lindsay Blake, Alice Jaggers
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Background: Patient Education is consistently cited by the Joint Commission as needing work at many institutions. However, with a limited number of patient educators and high nurse to patient ratios it is hard to find the time to adequately teach patients all they may need to know. The goal of this project was to create a course and online guide for nurses and patient educators. The course was approved for continuing education credit for nurses, dieticians, and health education specialists. The guide would serve as a central location for accessing consumer health websites and information for both educators and patients. …
Information To Help Families Meet Their Breastfeeding Goals, Christian I.J. Minter
Information To Help Families Meet Their Breastfeeding Goals, Christian I.J. Minter
Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
Breast milk is the recommended food source for infants during their first year of life. Although the rates for parents that initiate breastfeeding their baby are increasing, rates for those who continue breastfeeding past six months are much lower. Parents face a great deal of misinformation and misconceptions about the benefits of breastfeeding, how breastfeeding works, how to address challenges, and who to turn to for help. It is important for families to have all the facts, especially facts backed by science, to make the decision on whether to breastfeed, and, for those who do breastfeed, to successfully meet their …

Engaging Nurses In Evidence: Developing An Ebp Workshop, Abigail Smith
Engaging Nurses In Evidence: Developing An Ebp Workshop, Abigail Smith
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Upstate’s Department of Nursing adopted the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence -Based Practice (JHNEBP) Model as part of their journey toward Magnet recognition. To receive Magnet certification hospitals must have the infrastructure and resources to support the advancement of evidence-based practice (EBP) in all clinical settings. Nurses are expected to be able to speak the concept of EBP and cite examples of how they use evidence in their practice to achieve optimal patient outcomes. In an effort to increase knowledge about EBP and the JHNEBP model, an interdisciplinary team of nurses and a health sciences librarian investigated the best way to …
