Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Digital objects, such as emojis, memes, and reaction GIFs, have become common tools of communication between people, clever advertising for companies, and iconic means of identification and association for political figures. The evolution of their appearance and increasing use of these digital objects demonstrates the need to preserve these items as a means to document critical communication methods in the 21st century.

Educational efforts to maintain national culture can provide learning resources in readings obtained from certain regional cultures. With intangible cultural wealth, such as folklore or fairy tales, Indonesian culture will experience extinction or cannot be found again if the story is not collected. The narrator's folklore writing platform is a digital platform as a local cultural heritage, in this case, folklore, by converting implicit knowledge into explicit knowledge to be passed down to students as a source of learning and reference. This study uses an ex-post-facto descriptive survey approach to 95 respondents during the socialization of the storytelling platform by …

Voices From Drug Court: Partnering To Bring Historically Excluded Communities Into The Archives, Randy Williams, Jennifer Duncan
Journal of Western Archives
While many archivists have evolved their professional scope to bring diversity into their collections, we posit that much can still be done. One area for growth is greater work by archival professionals to partner with communities to help them tell and preserve their own stories, incorporating a community’s own perspective and goals. This article discusses the community-based project between the Cache Valley Utah Drug Court and Utah State University Library’s Special Collections & Archives. The project was conceived and co-managed by Andrew Dupree (name used with permission), a participant and now graduate of the Cache Valley Drug Court. Perhaps the …

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Many …

University folklore archives are expanding collections through cultural documentation projects run by students and community members. These new collections are a rich source of potential digital content. Bringing these collections online requires keeping the research audience in mind with thoughtful processing, modernizing traditional folklore archives description techniques, and working collaboratively with multiple library departments. The end results include expanded holdings and new digital resources for local historians.

Folklore In Archives: The Norman Studer Papers And The University At Albany Experience, Amy Schindler
Criss Library Faculty Publications
The papers of Norman Studer document the career of a progressive educator and folklorist at Camp Woodland in the Catskill Mountains and the Downtown Community School in New York City from the 1930s through the 1970s. Their original custodian, Joan Studer Levine, recognized that her father’s papers needed to be permanently housed in a repository that could both preserve the materials and ensure access for researchers. The collection came to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives at the University at Albany in May 2001, and the work of cataloging and preserving its contents is ongoing. Important associations …
