E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels Oct 2022

E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. This hobbles attempts to make e-books available on virtual shelves for serendipitous discovery and to distinguish collections of e-books in related subjects like …

Out-Of-Print Books As E-Books: A Collection Analysis, Mary Frances Calix Aug 2021

Out-Of-Print Books As E-Books: A Collection Analysis, Mary Frances Calix

SLIS Connecting

In recent years, archival institutions have begun to digitally archive or preserve the items in their collections. This way, items are more accessible to those wanting to perform research but not necessarily handle the original documents and are not likely to be permanently damaged. One example of a digital preservation project is the one that forms the basis for this paper- the Oklahoma Historical Society's collection of out-of-print historical books that have been made available as e-books. Created over three years ago, this collection contains 22 books about Oklahoma and Texas history. The original publication dates of the books cover …

Google Books, Jody Condit Fagan Feb 2021

Google Books, Jody Condit Fagan

Libraries

Google Books’ (GB) full-text search of more than 40 million books offers significant value for libraries and their patrons. However, Google’s refusal to disclose information about the coverage of GB, as well as observed gaps and inaccuracies in the collection and its metadata, makes it difficult to recommend with confidence for a given research need. While most search and retrieval functions work well, glitches aren’t hard to find, which suggests GB development is focused on user experiences that relate to monetization. Privacy and equity concerns surrounding GB mirror those of other big technology platforms. Still, every librarian should familiarize themselves …

A Report On Preparing The Council On East Asian Libraries’S (Ceal) Statement On Collection Development And Acquisition Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic: In Collaboration With The North American Coordinating Council On Japanese Library Resources (Ncc) And The Society Of Chinese Studies Librarians (Scsl), Fabiano Takashi Rocha

Journal of East Asian Libraries

The COVID-19 pandemic forced libraries to close temporarily halting the access to physical collections. As a result, many libraries started reformulating or implementing collection development policies that favour the acquisition of electronic formats. Given the low, and in some cases nonexistent, availability of resources in electronic formats in the non-English publishing realm, concerns were raised by several area studies organizations about the equity and representation in collection development and acquisition. This report provides insight on how the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) , along with the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) and the Society of …

Infrastructure And Facility Readiness For Providing E-Learning And Allied Services In The Engineering College Libraries Of Kerala, Joseph Jestin K J, S Ally Sornam Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Over the last decade, rapid reforms have been undertaken in the higher education sector such as policy framing, pedagogical transformations, accreditations, faculty standardisations and, most importantly, e-learning. Institutions, especially engineering colleges were quick and steady to admit the concepts of e-learning and its applications in the teaching and learning process. Online repositories and subscribed contents are no more an unfamiliar notion among the concerned users in engineering colleges. Though the majority of colleges are willing to embrace the new changes, academic circles are quite sceptic on the adequacy and suitability of infrastructural facilities available in the respective colleges. Many are …

Book Format Preferences Of Community College And Four-Year College Students: Results From Two Urban Campuses, John Carey, Ajatshatru Pathak

Urban Library Journal

This study compared the preferences of community college (two-year) and four-year college students at two public institutions with regard to accessing monographs in print or electronic formats. Results from 79 completed surveys indicate some preference for print among both populations, with approximately 52% of study participants preferring print books and 39% preferring e-books. While the popularity of print prevailed across a wide range of demographic groups and fields of study, the researchers also identified specific cohorts of participants who preferred e-books. Librarians at both community and senior colleges can use these findings to help inform collection development decisions.

Interpret The Numbers: Putting E-Book Usage Statistics In Context, Maria Savova, Madelynn Dickerson

Maria Savova

E-books have been an integral part of library collections for a long time now, but they are still surrounded by controversy. How much our patrons really use them? That seemingly simple question has a very complicated answer that could depend on a number of factors. The e-books’ usage reports mean very little on their own and leave many unanswered questions. In order to contextualize the usage statistics, the Claremont Colleges Library conducted an analysis of enhanced usage reports in comparison with the total offerings of e-book content available to our users from all major providers, and through all access models. …
