University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

University of the Pacific’s objective in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) audit of library collections was to examine the voices and subjects represented and reveal diversity gaps. During Spring 2021, in collaboration with library employees, eight student interns determined the methodology, assessed print and eBook collections, and provided recommendations on closing identified collection gaps. Initial results from auditing ~4,000 representative titles indicated University of the Pacific's library book collections lack the diversity to adequately reflect racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of students and their expectations for assignments and research. This paper documents the audit process and its impact on …

In the spring of 2021, the Tredway Library at Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) implemented an audit of the library's print book collection to see if there were gaps in representation of the voices of authors of differing races/ ethnicities; genders; or sexual orientations. A Practical Workflow For Ocr Telework, Rachel S. Evans, Stephen Wolfson, Tj Striepe

Articles, Chapters and Online Publications

The article informs about the strategy librarians at the University of Georgia's Alexander Campbell King Law Library used for applying Optical character recognition (OCR) to hundreds of documents during their multi-month COVID-19 pandemic lockdown; presenting a new opportunity for their OCR project because they needed work that staffers could do remotely; and how some staffers had duties that could only be performed in the building and were greatly limited after.

Evidence-Based Acquisition: A Real Life Account Of Managing The Program Within The Orbis Cascade Alliance, Hilary Robbeloth, Matthew Ragucci, Kristina M. Deshazo

All Faculty Scholarship

In 2015 the Orbis Cascade Alliance investigated a consortium wide evidence-based acquisition (EBA) model to incorporate into its established eBook program, and began a pilot of Wiley’s Usage Based Collection Management Model. EBA is an acquisition model that grants library patrons access to a title list over an agreed-upon time period for a pre-negotiated amount of money, and titles from that list are then selected for purchase based on the evidence of usage from the initial access period. This article shares the consortium’s experiences evaluating usage, managing titles and records, controlling duplication, predicting costs, and the inclusion of MARC records …

Textbook Collections: Required Of Our Students, Unwelcome In Our Academic Library?, Leanne Olson Nov 2017

Textbook Collections: Required Of Our Students, Unwelcome In Our Academic Library?, Leanne Olson

Leanne Olson

What happens when library policies and philosophies of the past run counter to user desires of the present?

At Western University (Ontario, Canada) we have an official collections policy to avoid collecting textbooks, as they fall outside of the carefully librarian-driven, research-heavy philosophies that drive our acquisitions process. However, in every survey to students and faculty, we find requests for textbooks on reserve and praise for the books we already have.

In response, I conducted a statistical analysis of textbooks and our collections: we already provided access to nearly 40% of required course texts (despite our policies), and these were …

Making Room For Change: Rightsizing Psu’S Axe Library Serials Collection, Barbara M. Pope Oct 2017

Making Room For Change: Rightsizing Psu’S Axe Library Serials Collection, Barbara M. Pope

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

Print serials collection development has long been a traditional role of academic librarians. However, in the last 20 years, academic libraries’ print serials ownership has declined and online access has begun to take its place, both partially due to concerns with flat or declining budgets as well as lack of space and the need to repurpose this limited space. Pittsburg State University’s Axe Library faces the challenge of balancing its print and electronic serials collections at a university whose programs sometimes do not draw enough on library resources. In an effort to create a meaningful discovery experience for the university …

Critical Collection Analysis: Using Dh Tools To Contextualize Historical Collecting Patterns Within A Political Framework, Lydia Bello, Nina Clements, Madelynn Dickerson, Margaret Hogarth

Library Staff Publications and Research

With the growth of digital humanities and a wide range of free and open source analysis tools at our fingertips, librarians have a unique opportunity to use these new tools to critically analyze library collections. Moving beyond usage and budgets, strategies such as text analysis, temporal pattern finding and data visualization offer insights into the structure and content of our collections, which in turn supports evidenced-based decision-making for future acquisitions. At the Claremont Colleges Library, librarians across divisions have been encouraged to learn tools and approaches to Digital Humanities, and apply these principles to our own work and relationships with …

Self-Publishing And Collection Development: Opportunities And Challenges For Libraries, Robert P. Holley

Purdue University Press Books

The current publishing environment has experienced a drastic change in the way content is created, delivered, and acquired, particularly for libraries. With the increasing importance of digital publishing, more than half the titles published in the United States are self-published. With this growth in self-published materials, librarians, publishers, and vendors have been forced to rethink channels of production, distribution, and access as it applies to the new content. Self-Publishing and Collection Development: Opportunities and Challenges for Libraries will address multiple aspects of how public and academic libraries can deal with the increase in self-published titles.

While both academic and public …
