Celebrating Native Chemists And Encouraging More Native Talent In Stem, Lisa Villa

Staff publications

This editorial was written to accompany cover art submitted to the American Chemical Society's 2023 ACS Diversity & Inclusion Cover Art Series, and selected as the July cover for Environmental Science & Technology Letters. The artwork design features several prominent chemists who are also strong advocates for increasing the number of Native American/First Nation scientists. They recognize how cultural beliefs may often be in conflict with scientific conversations, but have been working to attract and encourage Native American talent in the STEM fields.

The published cover art is included as a supplemental file.

Proof Positive: Applications Of Chemical Analysis Techniques In Art Forgery Detection, Joseph Fryc Dec 2021

Proof Positive: Applications Of Chemical Analysis Techniques In Art Forgery Detection, Joseph Fryc

Museum Studies Theses

In response to the subjective nature of older forgery detection techniques, modern forgery detection methods rely heavily on chemical analysis of the materials utilized in a given piece of work in order to make authenticity determinations. Chemical methods of detection at their core provide an objective determination of facts regarding the composition of materials utilized in contested pieces and provide a relative date of production for those materials. In this way, chemical analysis helps service the field of modern forgery detection as a direct compliment to traditional stylistic analysis, by providing extra data on the piece that can often be …

Social Tags And Controlled Vocabulary: A Comparative Study Of Documents In Chemistry And Literature, Dr Indira B

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The online information retrieval process enables users to assign keywords for easy access of documents. These keywords popularly known as social tags have now become a popular trend in the information organization. Many online library catalogues has provided provision which allows users to add tags to documents. These social tags has many similarities and variations with the controlled vocabularies used in libraries. Moreover the usage of social tags varies in each subject. The present study tries to compare the social tags and controlled vocabularies in literature and chemistry. The analysis have proved that social tags that exactly match with the …

Improving Information Literacy Through Wikipedia Editing In The Chemistry Classroom: Lessons Learned, Ye Li, Charity Flener Lovitt, Anne J. Mcneil, Kristen S. Shuyler

Kristen S. Shuyler

Assignments in which students edit Wikipedia may help students learn about the complexities of information creation and production, while engaging them in researching and writing about topics related to class content. This chapter presents two case studies that illustrate how Wikipedia-based activities can be designed to achieve both chemistry and information literacy learning outcomes. In both examples, faculty partnered with a librarian to implement the Wikipedia editing assignments. Through these experiences, those involved learned about Wikipedia and its community, and identified promising practices for project requirements based on formal and informal assessment and observations. Reflections are offered on the value …

Teaching Climate Change Concepts And The Nature Of Science: A Library Activity To Identify Sources Of Climate Change Misconceptions, Charity Flener Lovitt, Kristen S. Shuyler

Kristen S. Shuyler

A library activity was developed in which students found information about climate science misconceptions from popular and scientific literatures. As part of the activity, students developed a rubric to evaluate the credibility and type of literature sources they found. The activity prepared students to produce an annotated bibliography of articles, which they then used to create a training document about a climate science misconception for staff at a local science center. Evaluation of annotated bibliographies showed that students were able to distinguish between popular and scholarly literature but struggled to identify primary and secondary sources within the scholarly literature. In …

Collaborative Chemical Information Literacy: Is It "Scholarly?", Barbara C. Harvey

Barbara C. Harvey

This symposium illustrates a collaborative classroom activity that incorporates information literacy into an introductory chemistry course. The primary learning outcomes of the activity are to understand the peer-review process, knowing how to locate original research articles based on “clues” in a general news article, and how to differentiate between popular and scholarly periodicals. Students work in small groups in a highly-collaborative classroom setting. Each group is given a recent chemistry-related news item, and must determine how and where to find the original research article the news item is based on. Emphasis is placed on identifying original, peer-reviewed research publications. Each …

Analysis For Science Librarians Of The 2013 Nobel Prize In Chemistry: The Work Of Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt, And Arieh Warshel, Mary Van Ullen

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three scientists, Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt, and Arieh Warshel, in recognition of their work in developing sophisticated computer models that can predict and explain complex chemical processes. Newtonian physics can be applied to understanding the properties of macromolecules, but it cannot be used to model the extremely rapid changes that occur during chemical reactions. Quantum physics can be used to describe the instantaneous changes that happen at reaction sites; however, quantum calculations are extremely demanding of computing resources. The novel idea behind the 2013 award is the combination of both classical …

Use Of Electronic Science Journals In The Undergraduate Curriculum: An Observational Study, Carol Tenopir, Peiling Wang, Richard Pollard, Yan Zhang, Beverly Simmons

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

Phase 2 of a 2-phase project funded by the NSF- National Science Digital Library Project observed undergraduate and graduate engineering, chemistry, and physics students and faculty while they searched the ScienceDirect e-journals system for scholarly science journal articles for simulated class-related assignments. Think-aloud protocol was used to capture affective and cognitive state information, while online monitoring provided an automatic log of interactions with the system. Pre- and post-search questionnaires and a learning style test provided additional data. Preliminary analysis shows differences in search patterns among undergraduates, graduates, and faculty. All groups used basic search functions the most. Graduate students on …

Scholarly Communication: The Use And Non-Use Of E-Print Archives For The Dissemination Of Scientific Information, Ibironke Lawal

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This study surveyed a randomly chosen sample from a population of 240,000 scholars in nine scientific disciplines from private and public colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. The disciplines included physics/astronomy, chemistry, mathematics/computer science, engineering, cognitive science/psychology, and biological sciences. The survey sought to determine use and non-use of e-print archives in the different disciplines. Results show that 18 percent of the researchers use at least one archive while 82 percent do not use any. Scholars in physics use e-print archives the most and chemistry the least. ArXiv receives the most use and authors' web sites the …

Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light Mar 2001

Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light

Faculty Publications

We introduce quasirandom distributed Gaussian bases (QDGB) that are well suited for bound problems. The positions of the basis functions are chosen quasirandomly while their widths and density are functions of the potential. The basis function overlap and kinetic energy matrix elements are analytical. The potential energy matrix elements are accurately evaluated using few-point quadratures, since the Gaussian basis functions are localized. The resulting QDGB can be easily constructed and is shown to be accurate and efficient for eigenvalue calculation for several multidimensional model vibrational problems. As more demanding examples, we used a 2D QDGB-DVR basis to calculate the lowest …
