Ebookmobile: Delivering Subject-Specific Ebooks To Your Inbox, Kathryn Lybarger
Ebookmobile: Delivering Subject-Specific Ebooks To Your Inbox, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
Today's users are overloaded by the massive amount of information available to them, even within their own library's collection. Ebooks cataloged in batches of hundreds (or thousands) make a generic new ebook shelf prohibitively large and mostly uninteresting to a subject researcher. The Ebookmobile helps researchers become aware of new ebooks in the library collection in their specific area of interest, so they can start using them immediately. Ebookmobile checks the Voyager database daily for newly cataloged ebooks and creates feeds for ranges in a classification scheme. Researchers can choose to receive a daily e-mail or subscribe to an RSS …

Communication Overload: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Academic Reference Librarianship, C. Sean Burns, Jenny Bossaller
C. Sean Burns
Purpose – This study aims to provide insight on the meaning of communication overload as experienced by modern academic librarians. Communication is the essence of reference librarianship, and a practically endless array of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools (ICTs) are available to facilitate communication. Design/methodology/approach – This study relied on a phenomenological methodology, which included nine in-depth interviews with academic librarians. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using RQDA, a qualitative analysis software package that facilitates coding, category building, and project management. Findings – Seven themes about librarianship emerged from this research: attending to communication abundance, librarians of two types, …

An Analysis Of Bibliographic References Collected By A Social Computing Group, C. Sean Burns
C. Sean Burns
This research presents an analysis of references collected by an established group of users who share a common interest on a social computing website. The purpose is to demonstrate how social computing functions as an instrument for measuring scholarly communication. The goal is twofold: to reveal how an analysis of the references collected by interested users compares to and complements citation studies.

Over the last decade, the personal computer has been transformed from an isolated word processor and number cruncher into a communications device. The emergence of the Web, the expansion of broadband connectivity, and new versions of the Windows operating system have made it possible to share information and files around the world with the click of a mouse. So, the good news is that it is now easier than ever to connect to any other host on the Internet to share information or to set up your own Internet based information services. However, this is also the bad news because …

Computer-Assisted Instruction In Academic Libraries, Robert A. Aken, Laura Olson
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The implementation of a computer-assisted instruction package to supplement college-level bibliographic instruction is described. An outline of goals and objectives for an introductory package and a sample segment explain the technique for creating software locally, allowing for custom design. The use of sample materials permits student-tool interaction in a realistic exercise while also taking advantage of the computer's capabilities. Using locally available hardware with librarian-created text allows for subject-specific lecture presentations, elimination of repetition, and immediate instructional feedback. Results from use of materials by almost 2000 students are summarized.
