The presenters all handle social media for their libraries, but in very different settings: a large academic library at a public-private research institution, a medium-sized academic library at a private university, and a medium-sized public library in a town that revolves around a university. The workshop will provide some general discussion about how the different technology environments elicit different responses from various user groups and, using Twitter as a microcosm, the similarities and differences between approaches will be discussed. The legalities concerning social media policies and the magic of paying attention to target audiences will also be explored.

This presentation provides a short historical survey of the development of library cataloging in the Western world and includes information on the gradual growth of cooperation among libraries in terms of using shared standardized cataloging rules and classification systems. Contemporary cooperation in cataloging is also covered focusing on cataloging facilitated by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), OhioLINK, and the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) Consortium. Cooperative cataloging and metadata initiatives are becoming increasingly important in the United States and internationally.

In 2004, the Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine formed its Marketing Team in response to the changing perceptions of academic libraries. Our charge is to explore new and innovative ways to promote the library and to define its place within the larger university community. One of the primary goals of the group is to reconnect users with the library as place at a time of 24/7 electronic resources. Accreditation for universities and colleges is a milestone achievement. Failing an accreditation review can have a dire impact on an institution. A successful accreditation process should be a major goal of all involved at the institution, as it brings with it a validation of that institution. The academic library is included in accreditation reviews, so library personnel should plan to succeed in the process. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether such planning is evident or explicit in the mission and planning documents of nine academic libraries in Washington State.

Academic Library Directors' Perceptions Of Joining A Large Library Consortium Sharing An Integrated Library System: A Descriptive Survey, Dennis Krieb

The collective holdings of CARLI’s (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) “I-Share” catalog total approximately 32 million items. It is the third largest academic catalog in the United States, however only 76 of CARLI’s 148 academic libraries participate in I-Share. This descriptive survey examined the factors that influenced a CARLI academic library director’s decision to join, or not join, I-Share’s integrated library system. Seventy-seven of the 145 CARLI library directors sampled completed the web-based survey. This represented a 53.1% response rate.
