Ethics has always been an important issue in business. However, due to the corporate scandals at Enron and WorldCom and the subsequent passing of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, there has been a resurgence of research interest in business ethics. This encyclopedia reflects this current research interest and emphasizes ethics in strategic management, corporate governance, and organizational culture.

Rarely does a library have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty in the early phases of an academic endeavor. This project will document the steps taken to enrich the library as it engages as an active partner in higher education.
The library will develop a survey for faculty to determine their academic needs for the new programs in the newSchoolofMental Health Studies. Separately, the library will determine what resources it deems essential to support the new program. The current collection will be evaluated in light of the independent results, and a purchase list will be compiled.
Having acquired the resources, …

The Democratic victory in the 2006 Congressional elections meant that the name of the Committee overseeing Labor concerns was returned its original robust title: the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor. 2 Under the leadership of Rep. George Miller the U.S. saw the first minimum wage increase in ten years (Rubin). The Employee Free Choice Act passed the House, but stalled in the Senate.Librariansʼ support of the Act is strong with the ALA-APA Council having voted in favor of the Act by resolution in June 2006 and a statement issued in support of HR 800 in March, 2007.

Effective stewardship of caves and karst areas requires access to and efficient analysis of a diverse range of information. Vital data are scattered throughout specialty mainstream journals, which even for a single project could include fields such as ecology, hydrogeology, contaminant transport, toxicology, engineering geology and law. Additionally, volumes of crucial information often lie in difficult-to-find gray literature. Management recommendations and decisions should be based on assessments of state-of-the-art information, but fall short when important patterns and relationships are overlooked.
The Karst Information Portal (KIP) offers a solution to these problems. Conceived in 2005 and launched in June 2007, KIP …

These issues of Bohemia, a magazine published in Havana, Cuba, cover the years 1998 through 2001. A native of West Tampa born December 1903, Rodriguez lived her entire life in West Tampa and Hillsborough County. She passed away at the age of 101 on 11 September 2005. In the late 1990s, she began a dialogue with residents of her ancestral homeland, Cuba. In time, some Cubans began mailing her copies of Bohemia that often included hand-written notes or letters about their lives. Some people also wrote on the covers and inside of the magazines. Generally, this correspondence focused on activities …
Evidence Based Medicine: The Role Of The Health Information Professional, Nasra Gathoni
Evidence Based Medicine: The Role Of The Health Information Professional, Nasra Gathoni
Libraries
Introduction: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) is “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of patients” (Sackett et al, 1996). This concept of EBM extends the health information professional beyond “identification of literature to involvement in practicing and teaching quality filtering and critical appraisal of the literature” (Scherrer, 1999:324).
This definitely challenges the traditional role of the health information professional thus advocating for the need to acquire necessary skills, so as to be in a position to support EBM.
Objectives: To outline the steps in the EBM process; to explore the role …

Almost three years after Google Scholar's inception, only a third of Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) member libraries link to it from their Web sites. This article reports the results of a July 2007 survey of OhioLINK academic librarians, conducted to find out about their attitudes and current practices regarding promotion of Google Scholar. It compares the findings about placement of Google Scholar on Web sites and inclusion in library instruction with previous research, and includes recommendations for libraries about Google Scholar.

This article aims to focus on usage data in respect to full-text downloads of journal articles, which is considered an important usage (satisfaction) metric by librarians and publishers. The purpose is to evaluate the evidence regarding full-text viewing by pooling together data on the full-text viewing of tens of thousands of users studied as part of a number of investigations of e-journal databases conducted during the Virtual Scholar research programme.

Codes And Hypertext: The Intertextuality Of International And Comparative Law, Marylin J. Raisch
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The field of information studies reveals gaps in the literature of international and comparative law as part of interdisciplinary and textual studies. To illustrate the kind of theoretical and text-based work that could be done, this essay provides an example of such a study. Religious law texts, civil law codes, treaties and constitutional texts may provide a means to reveal the nature of hypertext as the new format for commentary. Margins used to be used for commentary, and now this can be done with hypertext and links in footnotes. Scholarly communication in general is now intertextual, and texts derive value …

For the past two decades, the University of Northern Colorado’s (UNC) University Libraries has utilized an Assessment Committee to assess user satisfaction. In recent years, they have implemented an evidence-based management model that involves a cycle of assessment, planning, budgeting, and action. This use of this model has resulted in successes in a variety of library areas.

How can training develop the philosophical commitment that library staff members need to successfully lead collaborative projects? How does conversation as a training model and play as an activity shape the collaborative learning process? How do we stimulate libraries and library staff to assume leadership roles in community building? This article is a study of a statewide training process designed to create opportunities for librarians to learn to lead collaborative community projects. It highlights the content, exercises, and methods used to stimulate learning. The workshops were facilitated as models of collaboration, and play, as well as sites of conversation about …

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
In a prior edition of this study, we examined whether the established online communication studies indexes—Communication Abstracts, ComIndex, and ComAbstracts—provided a good avenue of access to the journal literature that researchers in the field cite and whether, where the current journal literature was concerned, that avenue of access might be equal or superior to that provided by large, multisubject online indexes. In this iteration of the study, we similarly address EBSCO’s new product for communication studies, Communication & Mass Media Complete.

Library Personnel’S Role In The Creation Of Metadata: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Adonna Fleming, Margaret Mering, Judith A. Wolfe
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
The digital age has caused the paradigm to shift in academic libraries both in terms of their collections and the roles of their personnel. As academic libraries begin to digitize objects in their collections, how and who in the library creates access to these resources has become a hot issue. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries (UNL Libraries), taskforces were formed to study metadata schemes used at UNL Libraries. The taskforces identified the various metadata schemes in use and the role of various departments within UNL Libraries in the creation of metadata. They made recommendations about how to document decisions …
