Mentimeter is an online, audience response system that creates interactive presentations. Mentimeter can engage students through real time quizzes, brainstorming, self-assessment, and more. Participants will learn the benefits of using interactive presentations, and will hear examples of how Mentimeter is used in the classroom. Rapid e-learning programs such as Articulate Storyline make it possible to develop highly interactive sharable content object reference model (SCORM) packages without advanced programming knowledge. These SCORM packages can be loaded into most learning management systems (LMS) and allow librarians to better gauge students' information literacy competency and create flipped instruction opportunities to allow for better use of valuable in-class time. A workshop series was created as a non-credit course to meet the university wide need for LaTeX training. Two hundred respondents of an electronic survey that was posted for three weeks on the university portal desired some level of LaTeX training. Pilot workshop modules were offered from spring 2011 - fall 2012 and the original series was offered each semester starting spring 2012. Student perceptions of teachers can influence the success of instruction, and library instruction is no exception. Understanding the mindset of students can help academic librarians prepare for in-person and asynchronous classes and create instructional materials. By anticipating students’ impressions, librarians can challenge false assumptions and improve interactions. This poster highlights findings from a large study of how undergraduate students at one institution perceive academic librarians.

This paper explores collaboration between librarians and faculty in higher education to construct connections between informed learning theory, information literacy practice, and disciplinary scholarly products to foster reflective and deep engagement with information.

To address this challenge, the Marquette Raynor Memorial Libraries moved to a new instruction model for the First Year English program. The new model involved embedded librarianship and interactive Articulate Storyline tutorials pre-loaded into the Learning Management System (LMS). These new initiatives provided flexibility in teaching information literacy concepts and fostered stronger relationships between librarians and their instructors. In a biomedical engineering lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, co-author Dr. Glenn R. Gaudette and his research team are investigating the effects of stem cell therapy on the regeneration of function in damaged cardiac tissue in laboratory rats. Each instance of stem cell experimentation on a rat yields hundreds of data sets that must be carefully captured, documented and securely stored so that the data will be easily accessed and retrieved for papers, reports, further research, and validation of findings, while meeting NIH guidelines for data sharing. Little is known about the intellectual journey of advanced undergraduates engaged in the research process. Moreover, few studies of this population of library users include students' personal essays as a point of analysis in their scholarly pursuits. To gain insights into the research trajectory of apprentice researchers at the University of Michigan, the Library examined the personal essays that students submitted for its inaugural undergraduate research award. These essays chronicled students' intellectual growth and development throughout the research process. Drawing on observations about the unique needs of these students, the authors analyze the implications for library instruction and services.

This article includes how data information literacy relates to information literacy, competencies associated with DIL, the relevance of DIL to undergraduates, DIL in library instruction, and the reasons for library engagement with DIL. Examining DIL within the larger framework of information literacy can help outreach and instruction librarians engage with a format that may be unfamiliar to them but whose underlying foundation is well-established.

Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. The flipped classroom that started in K-12 has now caught the attention of higher education as a way of encouraging deeper and more meaningful learning for students.
This presentation will demonstrate how, by using an Articulate Storyline SCORM package within the Desire2Learn platform, librarians and instructors flipped the information literacy training session.

During 2012 the Liaison Librarians at Grand Valley State University undertook a new initiative to develop “instruction plans” for each of our liaison departments.
