Although archivists have traditionally seen themselves as passive recipients and caretakers of records, there is an increasing recognition of the power and influence archivists have in shaping the historical record and collective memory. This recognition has led to calls for archivists to use their power to promote social justice and government accountability. One important way to do this is to ensure maximum access to government records. Governments by their nature prefer to restrict records from the public, sometimes with the noble goal of protecting individual privacy, but most often because they wish to maintain power and control over their citizens. …

Etxeak Of Memory: The Basque Diaspora In The Oroitzapenak Oral History Project, Jill N. (Jill Nagy) Anderson

Throughout the verdant hills of the Pyrenees, the foundation of Basque culture is built on the foundations of the etxeak - the immense houses that form the centerpiece of Basque farms and symbolize the incredible cultural inheritance of the Basque people. This inheritance is most evident in their shared language, Euskara, and in their shared pride - both of which followed the Basques throughout their long history in the New World. A joint project between the University of Nevada in Reno and the Basque Museum and Cultural Center in Boise, Idaho, with funding by the Basque government, is documenting the …
