A Pro-Active University Library In The Brazilian Context., Carmelita Do Espírito Santo, Maria De Fátima Pereira Raposo May 2006

A Pro-Active University Library In The Brazilian Context., Carmelita Do Espírito Santo, Maria De Fátima Pereira Raposo

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This work aims to present some procedures that characterize a pro-active posture in Brazilian university libraries. For this purpose, aspects of the concept of pro-active libraries are presented in a context where growth in the number of needy students entering private higher education demands ever more use and application of information technology (IT) for their learning processes. However, it has been observed that most of these students have difficulty in using and applying this technology, not only in their academic lives but also in their professional lives. In our approach to Brazilian private sector university libraries, it was seen that …

Still Navigating Across The Atlantic: A View Of A Virtual Reference Service For Academic Libraries., Carmen Franco Barroso, Leonor Fernández Alfaro, Ricardo Carrero Galfore, Ricardo Chamorro Rodríguez, Rosario Gestido Del Olmo

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper presents the Via Virtual Project, a virtual reference service designed by the University of Cadiz as a strategy in response to the new educational model in Europe. It was launched in cooperation with the University of New Mexico General Library as a bilingual reference service in real time, available 24 hours a day. The philosophy of the project will be described: the difference between virtual reference and a traditional reference service, the reorganisation of functions and activities, the acquisition of new skills by staff, the implementation of the software, and training etc. At present, the University of Cadiz …

Positioning Librarians As Indispensible To The New Virtual Learning Environments (Vles), David Ball May 2006

Positioning Librarians As Indispensible To The New Virtual Learning Environments (Vles), David Ball

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper discusses the explosion in the use of electronic resources by students and the development of e-books. The existing high usage will intensify as virtual learning environments (VLEs) become the primary means of interaction between students and universities. A brief outline of university library procurement in the UK is given, followed by an analysis of a recent ground-breaking tender for e-books for higher education libraries in the UK. The continuing development of a bespoke subject collection of e-books for nursing students is explored in some detail, as is the demand for non-traditional resources for the VLE. The paper closes …

Library Support For Research In A University Context., Imogen Garner May 2006

Library Support For Research In A University Context., Imogen Garner

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Library support for research in a university context An increased focus on research within Australian universities, driven by the federal government’s research agenda, has heightened interest in the services and resources provided by academic libraries to enhance research within higher education institutions. While academic libraries have always had as part of their mission support for research within the university, what constitutes this support has changed over time. This paper looks at library support for research in the university environment over the past 10-15 years. In evaluating the changing functions of this support for research, examples from Australian university library websites …

Associate Dean For Research: Libraries Commitment To Interdisciplinary/Collaborative Sponsored Research In The Libraries And Throughout The University., James L. Mullins May 2006

Associate Dean For Research: Libraries Commitment To Interdisciplinary/Collaborative Sponsored Research In The Libraries And Throughout The University., James L. Mullins

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The research role of university librarians is changing. The advent of massive datasets by academic researchers has created the need for collaboration between the researchers and librarians. The National Science Foundation (USA) has recognized the need for management of massive datasets. In response, Purdue University Libraries has created a program and specific positions to help address this need.

Designed To Deliver: Building A Digital Collection To Support Research., Ellen Derey Safley May 2006

Designed To Deliver: Building A Digital Collection To Support Research., Ellen Derey Safley

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

For a university created from a scientific research institute, the importance of its library was essential for providing faculty with current literature. Yet, scientific and technical resources are some of the most expensive materials acquired by libraries. The 1980s and early 1990s was a very lean financial period. By 1998, the combination of a fundamental change in budgeting for acquisitions, the advent of digital delivery of information, and the rise in consortial purchasing arrangements created a surprisingly robust library environment. Within a twelve year period, a library previously deemed woefully inadequate became an asset to scientists and engineers needing scholarly …

Involving University Library Staff In Ongoing Research, Adriaan Swanepoel May 2006

Involving University Library Staff In Ongoing Research, Adriaan Swanepoel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

To embed university library practitioners in research, this paper proposes a strategy of maximum immersion. The strategy involves the inclusion of as many employees from as many sections or departments in the library as is practically feasible in research projects of an ongoing or repetitive nature. The paper argues that this strategy will overcome most of the obstacles that normally hinder research by library practitioners, including a lack of research experience and a lack of time. To succeed, the strategy should comply with a number of conditions, such as that the research has to be relevant and beneficial to the …
