W. R. "Butch" Evans Collection Of Pre-Columbian Surface Artifacts : Catalogue Of Accessions In Original Order, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. Special Collections And University Archives., James Anthony Schnur, W. R. (Butch) Evans, Samantha Musella, Sylvia Martinez Mullenix

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

This collection includes nearly 800 items donated by W.R. “Butch” Evans in summer 2011. Evans, a resident of Pinellas County, collected the artifacts, chert, pottery sherds, lithic tools, shell tools, and other items while exploring coastal areas and estuaries of Florida. He located “surface finds,” items providing evidence of pre-Columbian settlements that appeared along beaches, river beds and shorelines, and other similar areas of Florida. Out of respect for those middens and mounds remaining, Evans did not violate or desecrate historical sites while collecting these materials. This catalog represents a preliminary inventory of the materials in the W.R. “Butch” Evans …

An Overview Of Web Archiving, Jinfang Niu Mar 2012

An Overview Of Web Archiving, Jinfang Niu

School of Information Faculty Publications

This overview is a study of the methods used at a variety of universities, and international government libraries and archives, to select, acquire, describe and access web resources for their archives. Creating a web archive presents many challenges, and library and information schools should ensure that instruction in web archiving methods and skills is made part of their curricula, to help future practitioners meet those challenges. In preparation for developing a web archiving course, the author conducted a comprehensive literature review. The findings are reported in this paper, along with the author's views on some of the methods in use, …

Functionalities Of Web Archives, Jinfang Niu

School of Information Faculty Publications

The functionalities that are important to the users of web archives range from basic searching and browsing to advanced personalized and customized services, data mining, and website reconstruction. The author examined ten of the most established English language web archives to determine which functionalities each of the archives supported, and how they compared. A functionality checklist was designed, based on use cases created by the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC), and the findings of two related user studies. The functionality review was conducted, along with a comprehensive literature review of web archiving methods, in preparation for the development of a …

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

In 2008 the Interlibrary Loan department of the University of South Florida, Tampa, began a Purchase on Demand program, using interlibrary loan requests to supplement Collection Development practices. After three years the program was analyzed for effectiveness and compared to other programs currently in operation. To achieve a complete evaluation, interlibrary loan patrons were surveyed on their awareness and use of the Purchase on Demand program. This article combines the analysis of USF's program with recommendations gained through administration and evaluation of Purchase on Demand.

Making It Real: Faculty Collaboration To Create Video Content, Claudia J. Dold, Gary Dudell

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Interest in integrative health care is a growing area of health practice, combining conventional medical treatments with safe and effective complementary and alternative medicine. These modalities relate to both improving physical and psychological well-being, and enhancing conventional talk therapy. In an interdisciplinary collaboration, teaching and library faculty have created a series of sixteen on-line video interviews that introduce practitioner-relevant experiences to students as supplemental course material. These videos are available through the department web-pages to students in other related disciplines as well, including Social Work, Counselor Education, Psychology, and the Colleges of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine. The video series …

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Libraries try several ways of meeting patron expectations. Providing on-demand streaming video content for course reserves remains a formidable challenge. Multitudinous methods for acquiring and accessing content hamper the flexibility of any such service. This article reviews what one library has done to make streaming media, especially streaming video, available to faculty in the collection and how this foundation will be used to support electronic reserves service in the future.

Institutional Repositories--The Time Is Now!, Tina M. Neville

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Librarians at USF St. Petersburg recently established an institutional repository to collect and preserve the documents and scholarly output of our institution. By preserving our organizational productivity (reports, committee minutes, images, theses, articles, etc) in one secure location, the entire campus community has quick and easy access to a wide variety of information by and about our campus. The presentation will offer tips on creating a repository of this type, consider content choices, and discuss how the repository can play a significant role in institutional planning, communication, and accreditation efforts.

Digital Archives: Vibrant And Vital To Your Institution, Carol G. Hixson, Tina M. Neville, James Anthony Schnur

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

Libraries in North America have been leading the way in the establishment of digital archives, often called institutional repositories, for their universities or the institutions they serve. Many such repositories have had difficulty getting buy-in from faculty and others within their institutions because they have focused on one type of content only: peer-reviewed faculty content. At the University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP), a model of inclusion of all members of the campus community and all types of content, coupled with a high level of service from a small group of librarians, led to quick and early adoption of …

Health Numeracy Confidence Among Racial/ Ethnic Minorities In Hints 2007: Sociodemographic, Attitudinal, And Knowledge Correlates, Hong Huang, Yiu Ming Chan, Dong Feng

School of Information Faculty Publications

Health numeracy skills help people interpret health risks, and make effective medical decisions. Lower health numeracy confidence was observed for blacks and Hispanic groups than whites. Little is known about the important factors that explain racial differences in health numeracy confidence. For this study, we used a nationally representative, cross-sectional data sample of 4,610 U.S. adults from the National Cancer Institute’s 2007 Health Information National Trends Survey. Bivariate (Chi-squares) and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the contribution factors that predict health numeracy confidence. Non-linear Fairlie decompositions were used to quantify the factor contributions to racial differences in …
