A Comparison Of Systematic Review Services In Nj Academic Libraries And Beyond, Alyssa Borozan, Siobhan K. Mccarthy, Bonnie Fong

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

In recent years, there has been increased interest from faculty and graduate students at many colleges and universities in performing systematic reviews (SR) and evidence synthesis. How are libraries supporting these efforts? The presenters researched and compared the types of SR support services provided by its peers, aspirant peers, and notable R1 and R2 institutions with established SR services. This information is expected to help determine and shape the types of SR support services to provide at Montclair State University, and would likely be helpful for others interested in supporting these types of reviews on their respective campuses.

Louisiana Academic Library Workers And Workplace Bullying, Catherine Baird, Andrea Hebert, Justin Savage Apr 2023

Louisiana Academic Library Workers And Workplace Bullying, Catherine Baird, Andrea Hebert, Justin Savage

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

Workplace bullying is a problem in many work environments and can take different forms, including spreading gossip, criticism of work, unreasonable workloads, and being excluded. It can cause physical, psychological, and emotional stress, manifesting as depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, exhaustion, feelings of rage/despair, and in some cases, post-traumatic stress disorder or suicide. Little is known, however, about the prevalence of bullying amongst library workers in academic libraries. This comprehensive state-wide study provides a replicable model to explore workplace bullying in a systematic manner amongst all academic library workers, not just librarians.

I Don’T Have The Time Or Really Understand What This Is!Examining Our Faculty's Motivation To Use (Or Not) The Montclair State University's Institutional Repository, Darren Sweeper, Karen Ramsden

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

This poster aims to examine how we can encourage faculty to deposit their scholarly works into our institutional repository (IR). After devoting considerable energy on the development, implementation, and populating of content, the time had come to refocus our efforts to address the lack of faculty participation. Our research compelled us to rethink how we engage with faculty to identify barriersthat may limit their participation and awareness of the IR. In this study we conducted semi-structured interviews with faculty to explore how to best address the issues that define their engagement, and use of the institutional repository. After data

Information Literacy In A Post-Truth Era, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell Apr 2021

Information Literacy In A Post-Truth Era, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

The founders of American democracy believed it could not survive without an “informed citizenry”. What does an informed citizenry look like in today’s world? And what role do we have as educators and students to support it?

First, we look at the significant challenges to institutional and media legitimacy that emerged in the second half of the 20th century, which rightfully called attention to the ways longstanding Western knowledge practices excluded marginalized communities and silenced important histories. We ask about the status of norms and mores in the aftermath of this challenge, in an era often called “post-truth.”

Second, we …

Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares Jul 2020

Faculty Perceptions Of Students' Il Learning In First-Year Writing, Catherine Baird, Tiffany Soares

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

The study investigates the perceptions of first-year writing faculty of how their students develop information literacy (IL). The authors conducted 16 semi-structured interviews and analyzed them using a qualitative inductive coding method. The study contributes a close and nuanced understanding of faculty perceptions of IL learning to a literature with few recent qualitative studies. Faculty identify what they see as enablers and barriers to student learning. The authors conclude that the empathetic, process-oriented characterization of IL learning by these faculty invites further examination using multiple methodologies and elevation of faculty's voice in the discourse around IL.

Natural Selection And The Workshop, Siobhan K. Mccarthy May 2019

Natural Selection And The Workshop, Siobhan K. Mccarthy

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

In Fall of 2017, the Sprague Library began offering workshops for citation management software in response to the increasing number of 1-on-1 appointment requests. While workshops covering various topics had been offered in the past, attendance had been low. Casting this precedent into the wind, we offered additional workshops (using anecdotal evidence from library instruction classes, research appointments, and conversations with faculty to guide the topics), and targeted graduate students and faculty as our audience. Instead of using attendance as a way to measure success, we focus on participant feedback, follow up appointments, and word-of-mouth to advertise the guide topics …

Making Use Of Open Access And Open Education Resources, Siobhan K. Mccarthy

As the costs incurred by students for tuition and materials continue to rise, as educators we have a responsibility to ensure that resources used in classwork are accessible to all without causing financial burden. In this session we will cover Open Access and Open Education Resources that can be used in both teaching and research, including Open Access journals, Open Education Textbooks, and institutional repositories such as Montclair State's own Digital Commons, and how these tools can decrease costs for your students.

What’S Mine Is Yourls, Kimberly R. Abrams, Junior Tidal

The Emerging Learning Design Journal

Hyperlink management is critical to website functionality because a site with dead links is not fully operable for the end user. In libraries, links used for marketing, course materials, electronic resources, social media, and other uses are laborious to maintain. Often, these links are long, unreadable, and unmemorable. In order to streamline link maintenance, improve link usability, and promote resources, an open source, short link manager called Your Own URL Shortener (YOURLS), was implemented at an academic library. This primer describes this process. Not only does YOURLS shorten links, it also acts as a database link manager. Long URLs are …

Exploring Authority In Linguistics Research: Who To Trust When Everyone’S A Language Expert, Catherine Baird, Jonathan Howell

All Book Chapters by Montclair State University Authors

Many instruction librarians use the CRAAP test or a similar pneumonic tool as a regular activity in information literacy instruction classes. This involves having the students in the class select one or more sources and instructing them to answer a series of questions about these sources, as prompted by a simple checklist. Is the selected source Current, Relevant, Authoritative, Accurate and What is its Purpose? The goal is to help the students ascertain whether or not they should select this source and use it for an assignment. On occasion, a student will raise a hand and ask a simple question: …
