I'M Responsible For What?: Selecting For Topics You Know Nothing About, Eric Buckenmeyer Aug 2023

I'M Responsible For What?: Selecting For Topics You Know Nothing About, Eric Buckenmeyer

Georgia Library Quarterly

This case study details the author’s experiences selecting books for a subject he knew nothing about. Most librarians are asked at some point in their career to take on responsibilities that they do not feel prepared for, so the author hopes this article will help readers adapt to those unfamiliar duties. The author discusses the challenges he faced within Kennesaw State University’s team-based liaison model, his attempts to do evidence-based selecting, and the lessons he learned along the way. In the end, librarians tasked with selecting on unfamiliar topics may benefit simply from doing their best, relying on the available …

Athens State University is located in Athens, Alabama in the northern part of Alabama bordering Giles County, Tennessee. It is one of the only upper-level universities serving juniors, seniors, and graduate students in the country. The student body consists primarily of non-traditional and first-generation students. In 2014, Athens State University was approved to offer a graduate program in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the College of Business by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE). Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun Dec 2021

Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun

Faculty and Research Publications

Historically, collection development has focused on what material to purchase. However, with the maturation of web-based music audio databases, web-based video databases, online music scores, electronic books and reference material, and commercial audio/visual streaming services, the format of material is also now an important collection consideration. Faced with difficult collection development decisions due to the Performing Arts Library’s (PAL) limited space being filled beyond capacity with physical material, PAL librarians at Kennesaw State University (KSU) sought to discover the material and format preference of music faculty. This was done to see if faculty would use digital material, requiring no physical …

Citation Analysis: Availability Of Student Research Poster Citations, Sharon Holderman, Stuart Gaetjens

The Southeastern Librarian

This citation analysis examines the availability of 1313 citations from student research posters across multiple disciplines at a mid-sized university. The study focuses on whether the cited materials are available via the library or freely online. Results indicate only one-fifth of citations were from library proprietary sources while two-thirds were freely available online. Resource age and discipline also influence availability. This study informs collection development decisions and instruction services and helps define the library’s role of providing information and facilitating information access.

Health Sciences Assessment At Unc Charlotte: A Collection Devleopment Fellowship, Stephen Krueger Jul 2017

Health Sciences Assessment At Unc Charlotte: A Collection Devleopment Fellowship, Stephen Krueger

The Southeastern Librarian

The J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte serves over 21,000 undergraduates and over 4,000 graduate students. Apart from the sole branch library (Arts & Architecture), all of the resources are housed in the main building. In 2016, a plan was developed for a comprehensive weeding project. Two primary factors made this necessary. One was the adaptive nature of the library’s philosophy; student needs and preferences were constantly assessed, and changes were made to the library’s services and spaces based on them. The creation of a makerspace, a family-friendly study room, and other student workspaces …

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best Nov 2016

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best

The Southeastern Librarian

As e-books have come to hold a major impact on library collection building activities, the influence of reviews of titles and the on-going conversion of titles to a digital format have significant potential impacts for libraries. Reviewing tools such as Choice and the lag-time between publication notice of the print edition of a work and its corresponding e-version asks the questions, “How many of the print titles that are reviewed in Choice have a corresponding e-version ready for purchase?” and “How used are those e-versions in comparison with print?”

A Vibrant And Vocal Community: Establishing An Archival Outreach Plan For The Lgbtq Community In Utah And Similar States, Julia Huddleston Jan 2015

A Vibrant And Vocal Community: Establishing An Archival Outreach Plan For The Lgbtq Community In Utah And Similar States, Julia Huddleston

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Despite being both politically and culturally conservative, Utah has a vocal and vibrant lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community that has been making history and headlines for decades. However, there is a demonstrated lack of primary source material documenting these movements. The lack of archival material highlights the need for archives in Utah to actively seek out collections from LGBTQ individuals and organizations through a concentrated outreach effort.

This paper addresses the unique concerns associated with acquiring LGBTQ collections—building trust, respectfully arranging and describing materials in a way that maximizes access, and creating inclusive physical spaces through reference …

An Annotated Bibliography On Bias In Library Services And Collections, Denise Dimsdale Jan 2013

An Annotated Bibliography On Bias In Library Services And Collections, Denise Dimsdale

Georgia Library Quarterly

This annotated bibliography provides a selection of resources that delve into the topic of bias as it relates to library services and collections in the 21st century. Globalization, corporate hegemony, Internet search engines, and technologies such as virtual reference contribute to an environment where the librarian must be aware of personal and external biases in order to make appropriate decisions. The resources presented touch on ethics, neutrality, social responsibility, advocacy, selection and censorship. This broad spectrum of bias related topics will be especially helpful for librarians providing reference services and collection development in today’s library information environment.

Sports Holdings In The Southeastern Conference University Libraries: Football As A Case Study, William F. Meehan Iii, Margaret A. Swanson, Catherine O. Yates, Emily N. Decker

The Southeastern Librarian

Of the twelve National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conferences, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has attained prominence. But how do the SEC’s university libraries fare when evaluated for their football holdings? While university libraries develop their collections mainly to support research and teaching functions, according to accepted collection development practice, the extent to which sports of local importance are represented in their collections is a subject given little attention in the professional literature.

In order to help close the gap, this study evaluates the football holdings of the 12 SEC university library systems using the checklist …

Low Tech And High Tech: The Spectrum Of Special Collections Use In A Technological Institute, Anne A. Salter, Marilyn Williamson

The Southeastern Librarian

The gradual expansion of the Georgia Institute of Technology ‘s Library and Special Collection has resulted in a unique and outstanding science and technological research facility. The process was expanded by a number of individuals who dedicated their professional years to improving the holdings. Unique among these treasures is the first edition of Newton’s Principia. Collecting, preserving, and utilizing the new technologies to expand access to this outstanding collection has proved challenging. The primary materials, carefully collected over the years, are being protected and made available through traditional means; while at the same time technological advances are being utilized to …
